I worked my way up the ranks from lowly video editor, to camera operator, then director.

To a producer role. 

Eventually becoming head of my department in organising crews and shoots as well as managing all video content for our events.

Responsible for implementing the server and distribution network for our post production video strategy.

As well as helping implement many of the structures and frameworks for our video pipeline.

Spearheaded a world first in producing a social media campaign for a large pharmaceutical company. This taught me an awful lot about large corporates understanding of what social media is. Nothing like diving into the pool head first I always say.

Where I managed to hone the craft of video editing and video camera operation. 

Our area of expertise was video construction toolbox talk safety videos.

Glamerous to say the least.

But I am forever grateful for this start and to Guy (my boss) for giving me a chance.

And thus my first step on the video ladder began!

My mother in law encouraged me to take up this part time (turning to full time) position when I left uni.

Amazing isn't it the side tracks that life takes you on sometimes.

Never in a million years would I think that being a nursing assistant would be one of the most rewarding jobs I have ever done.

You get to see the absolute best in people and some of the situations I was placed in made me mature pretty quickly.

There is nothing more rewarding than seeing someone you have nursed get better and return to their life.

And it taught me a lot about the stigma that's often still associated what mental health.

My responsibilities included observation, note writing and working as part of a core team.

Have you ever wondered if you're the hero your younger self needed?

I am now...

But it wasn’t always this way. 

See I didn't have what you would call a conventional childhood…

I was sexually abused from the age of 5 till about 10, by a close family member. Yep I know.

Probably not what you were expecting to read on someones Linkedin Bio.

This destroys your trust in people and relationships, and my abuser would often try to commit suicide. Whilst I was left in the house with them.

So I escaped into stories, to try and understand what had happened to me.

Trauma strips you of your voice and it snatches away childhood. 
I want to teach adults how to play and be creative again (like they were once) empowering them through that to find their digital voice.

As that’s what was missing in so much of my childhood. 

Becoming who they are destined to be on social!

Stories let you escape to a place of safety. 
And when you're confronted with that as a kid, that’s exactly what you do. 

You dive into your imagination… 
Helping others to recognise the stories locked away in themselves is as natural to me as breathing. 
It’s my gift and it makes me unique.
Don’t worry this particular story does have a happy ending.

I would have never have met my incredible wife and had two amazing children if it wasn’t for what happened to me as a boy. So for that I’m thankful.

And with time I have forgiven that little boy and myself, and it’s shaped me, my business and my life.

Inside each and every one of us is a story waiting to be told, one that defines who you are.

It’s your digital voice waiting to become it, it’s that tiny sound inside you that you wish you could silence. It’s your story waiting to get out, it’s this that makes you unique and one of a kind.

I have already traveled this path.

Changing the stories we tell about ourselves allows us to change the world around us for good. 
If I can tell my story, you can too.

It’s this story which will allow you to cross the barrier to a new you. 
One that can create more revenue in your business by being your whole nerdy self. 
Through the power of play.

It's international mens day today. 

74% of all suicides registered in the UK are male. Let that sink in for a moment.

This is why spaces like we provide at ABandOfBrothers are so important.

Spaces where men can be genuinely heard. 
I'm not talking about the kind of BS banter you get down the pub.

(Don't even get me started on how useful combining mental health for men and alcohol is).

Being able to do this work in my spare time is a gift. If I can help just 1 man see the value in his own life. To see the spark in him and reignite a part of him that's missing.

Maybe. Just maybe, he can reclaim his life and go on to help other men who have been where he is. 

Male spaces, where men can share openly, with empathy. And laugh and cry together are needed now more than ever.

Shaming men isn't the answer.
Not listening to them isn't the answer.
Because we know where that road ends. 

Masculinity can be beautiful, healthy and (from I've seen with my own two eyes) needed.
