𝗗𝗼 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗿 𝗳𝗲𝗲𝗹 "𝗹𝗲𝘀𝘀𝗲𝗿" 𝗯𝗲𝗰𝗮𝘂𝘀𝗲 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝗼𝘄𝗻 𝗹𝗲𝘀𝘀?

I think it's endemic in Singapore.


Recently, it became a pattern during socials. 

⌙ Ben, why don't you drive?
⌙ Ben, have you bought a car?
⌙ Will you want to buy a flashy wrist watch?


This reminds me when I started out as a professional speaker, a decade back.

I went to an event to learn from a business speaker.

"You have to impress others. Then you can win new business"

He went on to share how he'd go as far as to purchase new automobiles, luxury experiences and properties on credit.

To his credit (pun intended), it worked out for him. Somehow.

So I stupidly bought a $300+ SGD suit (a good % of my pay check then). 

Then I realized... nobody really cared or looked an extra second at me. 

Worse, it was just a bad idea in sweltering Singapore.


In 2025, I still don't drive or own a car in our city. 

Even with one child, we get around with private hires and public transport with so much ease. 💯

As a traveling professional speaker, I'm also on the road 40-50% of the time, being a passenger prince.

Nor do I wear a Rolex or AP. (just an Apple Watch) 

Yet people still ask me occasionally, 

"Ben, you teach insurance agents and financial advisors right? 

Especially the rich and successful ones (yes, all of my coachees are typically high 6, 7 figure earners) 

Won't they judge you? Do you feel inadequate?" 🤔


Here's my "truth" after coaching CEOs, MDs, 7-figure earners and teaching in over 20 cities: 

If they judge me for what I 𝘯𝘦𝘦𝘥 𝘵𝘰 own or wear, then they are buying me for the wrong reasons. 

And worse, I won't want to keep on this hedonistic chase just to "get clients". 

Conversely, if they can appreciate and buy me for my character, wisdom and sheer value I put on the table...

Then I don't need that car, watch or fancy toy. 

Instead, I can focus on the work and helping them, without the need to impress anyone. 🎁


P.s. I've nothing against people who fancy luxury or nice items. It's just in the context of sales and "winning clients" - I think that's overrated.

P.p.s We do spend. And on travel and experiences - and this was me taking my family of 7 on J-class to Sydney. Totally bought into the concept of 'Memory Dividends' in the book Die with Zero'. 

And getting a family car will be a high likelihood when #2 kid comes 🚗

Can I share with you my weird trait?

Yes, you might guess it.


I was never a fan of celebrating birthdays. 

Just didn't get the meaning of it. 

Maybe it stemmed from how I didn't like "eyes on me" when I was younger.
(Ironic considering I'm speaking to thousands of people for a living now)

And if we celebrate ourselves frequently, is there  a "need" to celebrate birthdays? 


In the recent years, birthdays have taken a different intent for me.

#1/ 𝘠𝘰𝘶 𝘵𝘶𝘳𝘯 𝘺𝘰𝘶𝘳 𝘷𝘪𝘦𝘸 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘧𝘰𝘤𝘶𝘴... 𝘢𝘳𝘰𝘶𝘯𝘥

Notice how your phone camera view is always on the the birthday boy or girl?

Well, I've learnt to look up and around.

And I've seen how my parents, siblings and loved ones who have celebrated me.

Lowered mobility, more white hair and wrinkles. 

I've learnt to celebrate and appreciate them, as much as they do for me.

When my son, Davey, came in to our lives, he turned our lives upside down.

For the first few years, I told myself,

"May courage and faith be birthed within me"

These few years, I remind myself to birth joy, resilience and impact in my life so I can lead him better in the years to come.

Perhaps best explained with Chinese wisdom,

“吾十有五而志于学，三十而立，四十而不惑，五十而知天命，六十而耳顺，七十而从心所欲，不逾矩。”

From the Analects of Confucius, 

At fifteen, I was focused on learning. At thirty, I stood firm. At forty, I had no doubts. At fifty, I knew the decrees of heaven. At sixty, my ear was tuned to truth. At seventy, I could follow my heart’s desires, without transgressions ."

Not to be followed as dogma, but I've learnt to care less and listen inwards.

To seek my own truth and way.

Last week, I had the privilege of returning as a keynote speaker for the AIA Singapore Leaders Sync’posium 2026. 

It’s always an honor to be invited back, but this time, the stakes were higher.

And they had just 35 minutes to do it.

I’ll admit—I was nervous. Could this work on such a large scale, with so little time?

💡 Some were agency-level quality, with sharp messaging and compelling narratives.

Public speaking isn’t about you. 

It never was. Here's why 👇🏻


Years ago, I thought I had public speaking all figured out.

I believed it was about my message,
my voice, and my ability to inspire.

Then I met Bongani.

We were both speakers at an event in India.

I was young, ambitious, and, if I’m honest, carrying a lot of ego. 

I told him, 
“Speaking is my way to express my gift and change the world.”

He smiled and said something that changed my life:
“Speaking is service.”

I didn’t get it at first. 

So, he explained:
“If you have 10 minutes to speak to 15 people,
you’ve taken 150 minutes of the world’s time. 
That’s a gift. Your job is to serve them with those 150 minutes.”

That one conversation flipped everything I thought I knew about public speaking.

I realized I had been doing it all wrong.

I was focused on me. 
👉🏻 How I looked, how I sounded, how I wanted to be remembered.

But Bongani’s words taught me this:
✅ Speaking isn’t about being impressive.
✅ It’s about being useful.

When you step on stage, it’s not about:
❌ Your big agendas.
❌ Your fancy suit
❌ Your ego.

👉🏻 It’s about your audience.
→ What do they need?
→ How can you serve them?
→ How can you make their time worthwhile?

The moment you shift the spotlight from yourself to your audience, everything changes.

The fears I overcame to build a 7-figure business.

Let me take you back to 2012.

I was a fresh graduate, staring at my laptop,
unsure where to start.

→ Just a lot of self-doubt.

What I’ve learned is this:

"What if people judge me?" 
→ They will. But most people are too focused on their own fears to notice yours.

"What if I'm not expert enough?" 
→ You don't need to be the #1 expert. You just need to be one step ahead of someone who needs your help.

"What if I fail publicly?" 
→ I did. Including a Mandarin presentation in Macau that bombed so badly I wanted to quit. I'm still here.

"What if my competitors see this?"
→ Good. Let them watch you build influence while they stay silent.

Here's what I wish someone told me earlier:
💡 The cost of invisibility is higher than the cost of imperfection.

Every day you wait is another day someone else solves the problem you could've solved.
Every post you don't publish is a connection you'll never make.
Every story you don't share is trust you'll never build.

The fear you're feeling right now?

It's not a stop sign.
It's proof you're about to do something meaningful.

This moment shook me, always. 

Riots everywhere. 
Burglary in broad daylight. 

This was Medan, Indonesia in 1998. 🇮🇩

Why? What happened?

In late 1997, multiple Southeast Asian currencies crashed during the Asian Financial Crisis.
𝗜𝗻𝗱𝗼𝗻𝗲𝘀𝗶𝗮 𝘄𝗮𝘀 𝗵𝗶𝘁 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗵𝗮𝗿𝗱𝗲𝘀𝘁.

Indonesian Rupiah fell from 2,400 per USD to 17,000 per USD within months, 𝗺𝗼𝗿𝗲 𝘁𝗵𝗮𝗻 𝟴𝟬% 𝗱𝗲𝘃𝗮𝗹𝘂𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻.

𝗔𝘁 𝗹𝗲𝗮𝘀𝘁 𝟭𝟲 𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗺𝗲𝗿𝗰𝗶𝗮𝗹 𝗯𝗮𝗻𝗸𝘀 𝘄𝗲𝗿𝗲 𝗰𝗹𝗼𝘀𝗲𝗱/𝘁𝗮𝗸𝗲𝗻 𝗼𝘃𝗲𝗿.

Rioters targeted Indonesian Chinese communities.

Our housing complex organised 𝗽𝗮𝘁𝗿𝗼𝗹 𝗿𝗼𝘁𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀.
𝗚𝗮𝘁𝗲𝘀 𝗵𝗮𝗹𝗳-𝗼𝗽𝗲𝗻, 𝗽𝗲𝗼𝗽𝗹𝗲 𝗵𝗼𝗹𝗱𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗸𝗻𝗶𝘃𝗲𝘀 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗺𝗮𝗸𝗲𝘀𝗵𝗶𝗳𝘁 𝘄𝗲𝗮𝗽𝗼𝗻𝘀.
Everyone prepared to defend their families until we escaped.

I still remember how chaotic it was at the port, when I took the ferry to Penang, and then to Singapore. 🇸🇬

Til today, it is still a traumatic memory to many affluent Indonesians. 😢

They remembered the currency crash. 
They remembered the bank collapse. 
They remembered the horrors in the street.
They remembered how 𝗵𝗼𝘄 𝗺𝗼𝗻𝗲𝘆 𝗶𝗻 𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗶𝗿 𝗯𝗮𝗻𝗸 𝗮𝗰𝗰𝗼𝘂𝗻𝘁𝘀 𝗱𝗶𝘀𝗮𝗽𝗽𝗲𝗮𝗿𝗲𝗱 𝗼𝘃𝗲𝗿𝗻𝗶𝗴𝗵𝘁.

This is why, the same affluent Indonesians understand the importance of

- Diversifying your assets, especially placing parts of the assets outside of Indonesia
- Choosing a politically stable country
- Hedging against currency volatility

✅Singapore checks all of the above.

One lesson from 1998 that still stands today:
𝗜𝗳 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝘄𝗲𝗮𝗹𝘁𝗵 𝗶𝘀𝗻’𝘁 𝗱𝗶𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗶𝗳𝗶𝗲𝗱… 𝘆𝗼𝘂’𝗿𝗲 𝗯𝗮𝘀𝗶𝗰𝗮𝗹𝗹𝘆 𝘄𝗮𝗹𝗸𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗮𝗿𝗼𝘂𝗻𝗱 𝘄𝗶𝘁𝗵𝗼𝘂𝘁 𝗮𝗻 𝘂𝗺𝗯𝗿𝗲𝗹𝗹𝗮 𝗶𝗻 𝗿𝗮𝗶𝗻𝘆 𝘀𝗲𝗮𝘀𝗼𝗻.

The 1998 crisis wasn’t just an economic event.
It was trauma.
It was survival.
It was a lesson that still lives in every conversation I have with clients aged 40 and above.

The 3 most dangerous words when it comes to investment: 

"Trust me, bro"

If you’re thinking of doing business with a 𝗰𝗹𝗼𝘀𝗲 𝗳𝗿𝗶𝗲𝗻𝗱 𝗼𝗿 𝘀𝗶𝗯𝗹𝗶𝗻𝗴…
read this before you 𝘁𝗿𝗮𝗻𝘀𝗳𝗲𝗿 a single dollar.

Because I was a CASUALTY. 
I learnt the hard way and 𝗺𝘆 𝗽𝗿𝗶𝗰𝗲 𝘁𝗮𝗴 𝘄𝗮𝘀 $𝟯𝟬𝟬,𝟬𝟬𝟬.

Years ago, I went into a business with someone I 𝘁𝗿𝘂𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗱 𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗽𝗹𝗲𝘁𝗲𝗹𝘆,
and I believed he would never cross the line.

But when I started asking for financial accounts… 𝘁𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗴𝘀 𝗾𝘂𝗶𝗰𝗸𝗹𝘆 𝗳𝗲𝗹𝘁 𝗼𝗳𝗳.

“Corporate account still cannot be opened.”

“The bank is delaying.”

“Give me a bit more time.”
“I’ll send the statements soon.”

Weeks became months.
Excuses became stories.
Until after relentless questioning, the truth is finally out:

𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗺𝗼𝗻𝗲𝘆 𝗻𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗿 𝘄𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗶𝗻𝘁𝗼 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗯𝘂𝘀𝗶𝗻𝗲𝘀𝘀.

More than half of it went straight into his personal pocket and 𝗜 𝗲𝗻𝗱𝗲𝗱 𝘂𝗽 𝗹𝗼𝘀𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗺𝘆 𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗶𝗿𝗲 𝗰𝗮𝗽𝗶𝘁𝗮𝗹, $𝟯𝟬𝟬,𝟬𝟬𝟬 to be exact.

And the relationship?
Gone.
Crushed by the weight of money, secrecy, and betrayal.

That money was the PRICE I paid to learn this expensive truth:

Money doesn’t just change people.
𝗠𝗼𝗻𝗲𝘆 𝗿𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗮𝗹𝘀 𝘄𝗵𝗼 𝘁𝗵𝗲𝘆 𝗿𝗲𝗮𝗹𝗹𝘆 𝗮𝗿𝗲.

So here’s my take on this Reddit case and what you need to keep in mind:

1️⃣  𝗡𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗿 𝗷𝗼𝗶𝗻 𝗮 𝗯𝘂𝘀𝗶𝗻𝗲𝘀𝘀 𝘄𝗶𝘁𝗵 𝘇𝗲𝗿𝗼 𝗳𝗶𝗻𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗶𝗮𝗹 𝘃𝗶𝘀𝗶𝗯𝗶𝗹𝗶𝘁𝘆.
You don’t need to run operations, but you 𝗺𝘂𝘀𝘁 𝗵𝗮𝘃𝗲 𝗮𝗰𝗰𝗲𝘀𝘀 to bank accounts, payments, and real numbers.

If you’re shut out from the finances, you’re not a partner but a scam target.

2️⃣𝗕𝗲 𝗲𝘅𝘁𝗿𝗲𝗺𝗲𝗹𝘆 𝗰𝗮𝗿𝗲𝗳𝘂𝗹 𝗱𝗼𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗯𝘂𝘀𝗶𝗻𝗲𝘀𝘀 𝘄𝗶𝘁𝗵 𝗰𝗹𝗼𝘀𝗲 𝗳𝗿𝗶𝗲𝗻𝗱𝘀… 𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗻 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗼𝘄𝗻 𝘀𝗶𝗯𝗹𝗶𝗻𝗴𝘀.
I’ve seen families break, lifelong friendships collapse, and relationships beyond repair. 

All because of money matters.

Affection doesn’t protect you from financial loss.

3️⃣𝗖𝗵𝗼𝗼𝘀𝗲 𝗿𝗲𝗴𝘂𝗹𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗱, 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗳𝗲𝘀𝘀𝗶𝗼𝗻𝗮𝗹𝗹𝘆 𝗺𝗮𝗻𝗮𝗴𝗲𝗱 𝗶𝗻𝘃𝗲𝘀𝘁𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁𝘀.
It’s where oversight is clear and accountability is built-in.

4️⃣𝗔𝗻𝗱 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗼𝗹𝗱𝗲𝘀𝘁 𝗿𝘂𝗹𝗲 𝗻𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗿 𝗳𝗮𝗶𝗹𝘀:
If something looks too good, too easy, too smooth… slow down. Ask harder questions.

Protect your money before you need to protect your relationships.

If someone reading this is about to invest with a friend, or feeling unease about a “too good to question” partnership🚩… slow down.

✅check everything, 
✅question everything, and 
✅don’t gamble with trust.
