I work for an early-stage venture capital firm that invests in startups and creators, and given that my tenure in the VC business is largely tied to my ability to find sick people to invest in, I'm using my "about" page as a bat signal for just those people. Please hit "see more" to keep reading.

I'm interested, broadly speaking, in meeting with three types of people:

1) Moderately unhinged founders who are hell-bent on building something big and cool and want to use our money to do it.

2) Moderately unhinged founders who are hell-bent on building something big that the rest of the world finds lame, but, for some reason, they are obsessed with, and wants to use our money to do it.

3) Influential creators who have realized that they'd rather use their platforms to build their own businesses instead of living on brand deals forever. (I used to run ads on my blog, not the highest leverage way to monetize an audience! That's why I'm a VC now).

If this describes you, hit me up. Of course, in the name of transparency, I should probably tell you a bit about myself so you'll know if you even want to meet with me in the first place. (Business, like love, is a two-way street, after all).

A few things about me: I've been blogging on Substack since 2021, writing about everything from personal finance to travel shenanigans when I was 24, and 65,000 people subscribe to my blog now. I even landed a book deal with Penguin from that blog. The topic is life advice for 20-somethings, basically. It comes out in 2026.

I wrote most of that book in a 2-week period (50,000 words in 14 days while locked in a hotel room in the CitizenM in the Bowery). I'm pretty happy with it; the best thing I've ever written. If you're reading this, you should subscribe to my blog. And read my book.

Other prior experiences include working for Robinhood's media startup Sherwood News, managing a newsletter for finance meme page Litquidity, working in corporate finance for UPS, and spending a year living out of a backpack abroad and blogging about the whole thing (never staying in a hostel again, but it was fun).

Many people have asked me, "Jack, how is a venture capital associate supposed to have differentiated sourcing in 2026 when everyone is using the same AI tracking tools?"

My answer? Find My Friends.

Any time I meet someone who I assign a >1% chance of starting a company (I have a robust mental model trained on the hundreds of pitches I've seen over the last year), I say, "Hahaha, you know what would be funny? If we added each other on Find My Friends so if we're in the same neighborhood, we can grab beers."

But actually, this allows me to track which of these serendipitous contacts are the most "locked in," and, importantly, who seems to be pitching VCs. See, I have overlaid my Find My Friends interface with popular nightlife neighborhoods in NYC and SF, every VC office location in both San Francisco and New York, and the coffee shops most-regularly populated by VCs near Jackson Square.

Any contact that averages more than 3 evenings out in a popular nightlife area (west village, marina district, etc) per month is assigned a red flag (not locked in!), and anyone who appears in the vicinity of VC offices or the South Park Blue Bottle more than 4x in one week receives an automated text from my AI co-pilot that says, "What's up ____, hope all is well! Coffee soon?"

Haters call it an "invasion of privacy." Me? I say I'm just monitoring the situation.

The #1 Red Flag In Hiring a Salesperson

Since 2006, I’ve been helping professional salespeople, sales managers, business owners, and entrepreneurs sell more, faster, at higher margins, with less stress, more predictably, while having more fun doing it.

Thousands have come to me from at least 28 countries, and they all have a few things in common:

They hate writing.
They hate selling.
They hate marketing.
They have the wrong technology, i.e., CRM, or they don’t use what they have correctly.
They blame their technology for their issues, so they come to me looking for advice on what to buy. (I usually have them keep what they have and help them learn how to use it.)
They can’t keep great salespeople.
They can’t get rid of their crappy salespeople.

So here’s what to look for to help you in your search for great salespeople. (Well, it won’t necessarily help you get great salespeople, but it’ll help you screen away the crappy salespeople, so it’s a positive by avoiding a negative…or something like that.)

If, during your interview with your sales candidate, they say something to the effect of,
“I’m great with people,” or
“I’m a people person”…

Just end the interview right there.

Of course, great salespeople are great with people. They are great communicators. They are curious. They establish trust. They break down barriers. They build consensus.

But they are also comfortable being alone…and pushing the boundaries…and ruffling feathers…and handling rejection.

Salespeople are the rugged individuals some mayors mock and ridicule, but they are the backbone of business, and business is the backbone of our nation, so you could say that great salespeople make this country what it is.

So, if you hear a wimpy answer from a sales wimp in an interview, just say no.

Market like you mean it.
Now go sell something.

Do you know why you can't sell your awesome-AI, your super-SaaS, or your amazing-automation thingy?

It's not your fault.

Well, it kinda is, and it most certainly will be after you read this...

The best way to explain it is with a story...

Have you ever watched one of those home makeover shows and wondered, "Why did those people tolerate such crappy living conditions for so long? The fix was so easy...so obvious...just remove that...just install this...anyone with half a brain and a hammer could've done that in an afternoon!"

That's why you can't sell your stuff.
Maybe it's lack of empathy.
Maybe it's the "curse of knowledge."
Maybe it's "The E-Myth."
Maybe it's Solomon's Paradox.

It's definitely some part of all of that, plus distrust of salespeople, disdain for the "hustle and grind" mentality, disgust with the "internet bro" culture, fear of the unknown, hatred of the thought of being closed, embarrassment at not knowing something, and the fear of looking silly or stupid, and the simple lack of creativity.

We have no vision. No dreams. No aspirations. No lofty goals. 

It has been beaten out of us by about 7th grade.
Sit down.
Face forward.
Shut up.
Regurgitate.
Graduate.
Sit in a cubicle.
Don't ask questions.
Go along to get along.
Do what everyone else does because we've always done it that way.
Besides, nobody ever got fired for buying IBM or overpaying for Deloitte.

Way back in the Paleolithic era—which was iOS 5 in October 2011—Apple released Shortcuts, which is now Text Replacements.

It's magical for *professional salespeople, sales managers, business owners, and entrepreneurs*. (That phrase is "prosa" on my phone and computer.)

I have about 150 short codes for everything from my email to my EIN to my TSA number to my bio for speaking and interviews to my calendar link to 37 keyword phrases for YouTube to affiliate links and more.

I've always said, look at anything you do 2-3 times a day or 4-5 times a week and have a process for it and automate it if you can.

Well, I type my email, cell phone, scheduling link, etc., many times a day. So I have shortcodes for them.

Back in 2016, I made a video on how I was using them. (I'll link to it in the comments.)

Weekly, I tell someone about this, and they are amazed.

Some actually start to use this powerful tool.

Most don't.

Ditto with the sales and marketing automation tools I began showing professional salespeople, sales managers, business owners, and entrepreneurs how to build with Infusionsoft in 2008. (Then HubSpot, Ontraport, ActiveCampaign, etc.)

Well, AI agents are the same thing, just more powerful and diverse.
