As editor in charge of MarketWatch's personal-finance coverage from Jan. 2010 through Aug. 2012, I worked with a team of staffers and freelancers to cover a broad range of topics -- real estate, retirement, taxes, careers, consumer debt, college savings and more. Our focus on our readers' everyday money concerns helped *double* traffic to the site's personal-finance stories.

In addition to editing and writing stories and spearheading special reports, I also produced the Personal Finance Daily e-newsletter, updated MarketWatch's personal-finance pages, and created SEO-friendly headlines.

From January 2006 through January 2010 I was Assistant Personal Finance Editor at MarketWatch, and from May 2002 through December 2005, I was a Personal Finance Reporter there.

I'm a professional editor and writer focused on creating high-quality, expert personal finance content that's easy for readers to understand. I've also worked as a financial coach at a local nonprofit, helping people reach their money goals.

In the realm of content creation, one of my favorite challenges is figuring out how to answer the money questions people are asking -- and doing that well and helpfully and elegantly within the ever-changing context of SEO. You can't help people answer their most important money questions if they're not finding your stories. At the same time, you can't devolve all content into a keyword driven miasma. Let's just say: It's an ongoing challenge!

My stories have appeared in the Wall Street Journal, USA Today, Forbes, Miami Herald, San Francisco Chronicle, NerdWallet and elsewhere (including the most-read lists of WSJ.com and MarketWatch.com). I've appeared as a personal-finance expert on TV and radio shows nationwide, and I've won awards from the National Endowment for Financial Education, the Society of Professional Journalists and the National Association of Consumer Advocates.

My topic areas include taxes, investing, retirement planning, credit building, debt management and more, and I've worked as a financial coach and volunteer tax preparer. I earned my CERTIFIED FINANCIAL PLANNER designation in July 2024, a feat of which I'm very proud.

I'm ridiculously excited to report that I quit my job and I'm now on a self-funded, stay-at-home, year-long, living-my-best-(frugal)-life sabbatical. I've got some plans, people, including long walks with my dog, finishing up a personal writing project, doing some freelance work and money coaching, seeing friends and family more often, and getting my Enrolled Agent designation so I can eventually become a tax preparer.

Are my days as a personal finance editor and writer over? I'm not sure. Maybe I should ask Claude. 🤔 🤷‍♂️ 😬  Big picture, the future of personal finance content is so murky right now. All I know is, I still love the work of creating and editing financial content that helps people live their best lives. The IRS' free Direct File program is gone, which to my mind is a huge wasted opportunity. It was popular with the people who used it, and what could be better than filing for free through an easy to use plus IRS owned-and-operated program? Meanwhile, a fair number of fin-tech apps seem to be partnering with april, a tax-prep company. Chime, Acorns, Robinhood are all offering free tax prep through april this year. I've never used april so can't speak to it but it'll be interesting to watch what happens in the "free tax filing" space.
