I sat down with Matthias Kleven, Head of Northern European Partnerships at Shopify, and we talked about something that's already live in the U.S. and being rolled out in the UK, buying directly from AI agents without ever touching a website.

Yep.. a fundamental change in how shoppers buy! 

Think..... huge shift in buyer behaviour..

Universal Commerce Protocol (UCP) is an open framework co-developed by Google and 20+ retailers that allows Gemini, Microsoft Copilot, and other agentic platforms to handle the full buying journey.

For Shopify merchants, this is already toggled on as a channel. 

For non-Shopify brands, the Shopify catalogue is now open for the first time ever.

Here's what caught my attention:

50 million commerce-related queries happen daily on ChatGPT alone

Conversion rates are about to shift dramatically when you remove the redirect friction

Product catalogue optimisation is now as critical as traditional SEO ever was

FAQs, shipping details, return policies. If agents can't access it, you won't surface

UCP sits as a layer on top of existing APIs and tech stacks, it doesn't replace them

Matthias and I discussed how search has evolved from "black running shoes" to full conversations like "I'm running my first half marathon, how should I train and what gear do I need?" and how agents are now curating baskets programmatically based on those conversations.

One of the biggest shifts I think I’ve ever seen is coming.

This isn't six months away. It's right now.
