Why your PM is burnt out (and it’s probably not the workload)

If your project manager looks exhausted, it’s unlikely to be because of the plan, the tools, or the hours.

It’s usually something else.

Most PM burnout comes from decision avoidance.

Leaders say they want transparency.
They say they want risks raised early.
They say they want honest reporting.

But when a PM does exactly that:
	•	early risks are labelled “negative”
	•	requests for decisions are seen as “pushy”
	•	scope protection is called “difficult”
	•	transparency turns into personal ownership of every delay

So the PM ends up carrying responsibility without authority.

When leaders avoid decisions, that responsibility quietly flows downhill.
And once it’s there, the PM gets judged as if they chose the direction themselves.

That’s exhausting.

Not because PMs lack skill —
but because they’re buffering ambiguity, politics, and indecision.

If your PM is burnt out, it’s often a leadership signal, not a capability problem.

Project leadership only works when:
	•	decisions are explicit
	•	trade-offs are owned at the right level
	•	accountability sits with decision-makers, not messengers

If your updates don’t include a decision, an owner, and a date, it isn’t leadership.

It’s task reporting.

Be clear with your PM at the start of a project.

Will you genuinely accept early truth — even when it’s uncomfortable?

Because if you don’t,
you’re not asking for project leadership.

You’re asking someone else to carry the consequences.

So.

Sunday morning.
Firth of Forth.
A man from Fife decides he’s going to Cramond Island.

(Hey I’m merely the reporter 😬) 

Not via the causeway.
Not checking the tides.
Not in a wetsuit.

On an airbed.

Yes an airbed.

His pal says (and this is the best bit):

“Are you sure this is a good idea neebour?’’ (This is a Fife accent, I grew up there I’m allowed to take the piss).  

And our hero says:

“Aye. It’ll be fine.”

It was not fine.

He gets swept away by the current like a middle-aged message in a bottle and has to be rescued by a lifeguard who absolutely did not wake up that morning expecting to save a man attempting maritime travel on something bought from Argos.

Now.

Every organisation I ever work with is that man on the airbed.

• The tide = the system
• The current = variation
• The airbed = a new framework / target / transformation plan
• The wetsuit he didn’t wear = understanding the work
• The pal who said “are you sure?” = the one systems thinker everyone ignores😂

(I know it’s a tenuous link - cut me some slack this story was too good not to share). 

And the lifeguard?

That’s the consultant you call after you’re drowning (he called from
his life raft…..how?) 

Here’s the killer line from the story:

“If you want people to change, they should get knowledge before they
Make a change’’. 

It means:

	•	Experiencing the real constraints, not PowerPoint ones
	•	Feeling the flow of work, not assuming it’s calm because it looks calm from shore
	•	Learning before the tide turns, not halfway to Norway

Too many puns? 

Because systems don’t care about confidence.

They care about reality.

The tide still comes in.
The current still pulls.
And airbeds are still for pools.

Moral of the story?

If your transformation plan requires bravery, optimism, and “it’ll probably be fine”…

You’re already in the water.

Go study, get knowledge before you leave the shore.

Service is failing in the UK.
Claims is particularly bad.

Nearly 30,000 claims-related complaints reached the Financial Ombudsman Service in a single year.
