Becoming a father shifted everything.

Not just my schedule. My entire pace.

And for a while, I kept looking around thinking I should be further along. Peers hitting milestones I haven't. People building things faster. Moving up quicker.

The comparison trap is quiet. It doesn't announce itself. It just makes you anxious. Stressed. And the worst part? Absent, even when you're present.

I would be with my son and my mind would be elsewhere, running through what I'm not doing, where I'm not at.

And it's hit me hard that this isn't helping anyone. Not him. Not me. Not my work. 

You have to remember to run your own race, we learn this in our long distance running training as well. At the end, it’s you vs you and your ability to show up and thrive is purely in your hands (and legs 🤣).

I'm playing a different game now. Different conditions. Different priorities.

So I'm doubling down on what I'm actually good at. Building deeper relationships with people I like working with. Focusing on the space that excites me.

Not what looks impressive. Not what someone else is doing.

Progress isn't always visible. But it's still progress.

I stayed too long at a place that looked great on paper.

Good founders. Interesting product. Smart people all around.

But at some point, I wasn't enjoying the actual work.

I told myself it would get better. That I just needed to push through the hard parts. That this is what "grinding" looks like.

The reality? Burnout wasn't loud. It was gradual. Resentment crept in. And I was the one who let it happen.

I could've blamed the role, the timing, the circumstances. But that doesn't change anything. Only I control my path.

James Clear has this line I keep coming back to:
"The person who is having fun has a better chance of winning because they are more likely to stick with it when things get challenging. If it felt like a hassle from the start, you're likely to quit as soon as things get tough." If you aren't subscribed to his 3-2-1 newsletter, its a goldmine of thoughtful words.

I deeply connect with this because I was trying to stick with something that felt like a hassle as things were shifting in the org, convincing myself that's what commitment looks like.

It's not.

You'll end up working on things that don't light you up. Great founders, interesting industry, solid team. Those factors matter. But if the work itself doesn't give you some joy, it's hard to sustain. And in the end, it may hamper your reputation as an operator as well.

If you can switch off completely and disconnect from work, I genuinely envy you. But for me and many operators I know, that's just not how we're wired.

Solving for joy at work is tough. It takes experimenting. Some trial and error. But the faster you make decisions when something's not working, the faster you get there.
