March is the worst in NYC, so I'm leaving:

I've done the SaaStr and Dreamforce thing and they're great.

But there's something that just hits differently with these marketing focused events for me.

I have a feeling I'm going to love the intimacy of Spryng.

Met with George Vlasyev yesterday at my new 'co-creating' space The Lighthouse.

Been getting so much life from the space and had the opportunity to use one of their podcast studios to be interviewed on a range of AI GTM topics.

The future of search, Audience Engineering, ads in llms (OpenAI 👀), video and so much more.

George is bullish on video in funnels and has mastered it. 

Even more importantly, he's going to be moving to NYC (putting it out there), to double down on his startup and aspirations.

Most reps see a signal and think buying intent. And it's absolutely killing their reply rates.

Leslie Venetz calls it what it actually is: noise you're creating for yourself.

She's been doing signal-based outreach since 2009. Her take: every signal puts your prospect in one of three buckets. And most reps treat them all the same.

Problem Unaware: they just changed jobs. They don't know what's about to hit them. Don't pitch. Deposit value. Leslie waited two weeks after a new CPO trigger, then sent a 3-page guide on how to nail the first 100-day internal roadshow. No ask. Just relevance.

Option Unaware: they're attending webinars, downloading content, figuring out what "good" even looks like. Stop pushing them to a demo. Keep educating. Become the resource they trust before the decision is made.

Vendor Aware: they're on your pricing page. Now get out of the way. Answer the question. Use video. Remove barriers. Stop forcing a 45-minute demo on someone who asked one thing.

The shift: from "what's my in?" to "what do they actually need right now?"

Companies she's seen making this shift went from 0.02% to 20-30% open and reply rates.

Not by sending more. By sending what actually earns the next email.

In a world full of ai, taste is still in short supply.

About a year ago I met Mike. 

I can't tell you the positive impact he had on my journey. (and he probably doesn't even realize it)

I was burning out fast and felt like I was all alone. Burning out and feeling alone is a really difficult combo.

Even running a 60k+ person community, it's possible to feel alone.

We were speaking about collaborating on a project at the time.

We'd have conversations I'd yearned to have with somebody who's been in my situation. Has been successful.  He gave me space to open up and to not feel so alone.

He became a guide for me over a relatively short period of time. 

Following, I made some tough decisions and placed some bets. Not all of them panned out. 

But that's ok, my sleepless nights became fewer and further between. 

I felt more in control - even with failed bets and through tough times.

The tough times made me a stronger operator. More seasoned.

My love for growing our community grew stronger than ever in the process.

And today, I'm exactly where I need to be.

We caught up last week and snapped this picture. I'm sure he could sense a shift in me.

All because he was a friend before business.

If you're just repeating 'congrats on raising a round of funding' you're driving zero connection. And they probably don't even know they have a problem

The problem unaware bucket is where you can drive the most impact to revenue by changing your mindset.

That was Robert F. Smith, yesterday, in front of our entire company.

I asked him what success looks like for Vista Equity Partners' investment in Gainsight over the next few years.

He said no one in customer success has approached agentic AI like we have. And that the sprint, the real one, starts now. Get it deployed. Get it working. Get customers experiencing the value.

And the flip side, which he didn't soften: if we treat this like business as usual, we'll lose the pole position we've earned.

My Slack was blowing up from teammates the moment the call ended. Someone we all respect looked us in the eye and said, you've already done something hard. Now go finish it.

For anyone leading a CS org or running a B2B SaaS business right now: that's the question worth sitting with. Not whether you're moving toward AI. Whether you're moving fast enough to still be first.

Yvette is SVP of Customer Success at Equinix. She's been building and leading CS organizations for 30 years.
last week in our company all-hands, she told our team a story from early in her career.

She was at IBM, pursuing an account team role at a large Southern bank. Someone told her directly: no woman and no Black person had ever succeeded in that seat.

She took the job. It became the biggest deal of her career.

I've always respected people who lean out on the limb to get the bite of the apple. I've done it myself. I thought I understood that story.

But sitting with it today, I realized I didn't... not fully.

When I've taken risks in my career, there was always a net. People around me talking about my potential. An educational background that opened doors before I even walked in. An unspoken assumption that even if it didn't work out, I'd be fine.

Risk for me has always been a choice.

For Yvette early in her career, it wasn't. Choosing the hard assignment, walking into the room where nobody expected her to succeed... that wasn't a personality trait. It was the only path forward as a Black woman trying to successfully grow her career.

Thirty years later, she's at the top of her field. That didn't happen despite who she is. It happened because of it.

I'm a senior leader at a $100M++ ARR company and spend 45 min a day here on LinkedIn. Yep, me. Not outsourced. Just me running this page. Why? Because all of our clients and prospects are here sharing and building. 

Just yesterday, I saw posts from 3 current Gainsight customers and had 4 profile views from prospects in our buying cycle. Not to mention over 200K impressions on my content over the last couple weeks.

Jack Dorsey just laid off 4,000 people and wrote one of the most human memos i’ve read in a long time.

He led with the severance package before he explained anything. Most executives do it the other way around - they make you sit through the rationale first. Jack knew what people actually needed to hear in that moment. That’s empathy.

He kept communication channels open so people could say goodbye. He hosted a live video. He said he’d rather it feel awkward and human than efficient and cold.

And he owned the decision completely. Didn’t point at the board or market conditions. Just said: i made this call and i’ll own it.
That stuff is rare.

But there’s something the memo doesn’t say.

The memo frames this entirely around AI —that intelligence tools and smaller teams are enabling a new way of working. And that’s probably true. But it’s not the whole story.
Block went from roughly 5,000 employees in 2020 to over 10,000. They paid $29 billion for Afterpay. The stock is down 75% over five years.

None of that is in the memo.

So you have this extraordinarily human piece of writing; genuine, warm, fully accountable in tone. And sitting right next to it is a version of events with some chapters missing.

i don’t think that makes him a bad leader. 

i think it makes him a pretty recognizable one.

We’re all capable of being more honest about how we got somewhere than about why.

Earlier this week the CRO of a well known AI scale-up told me they were growing their GTM team from <50 to greater than 200 this year! Without any CSMs. 

They believe that Account Managers can get the job done of driving adoption and value delivery throughout the customer lifecycle; and then the AMs will commercialize accordingly. Monetization is in their DNA. 

OK, I get it. And maybe at the end of the day this is just all semantics. 

But then I thought a little more about it which spurred me to write back to the CRO below. 

With this particular product, like so many others in this AI and agentic era, one could argue that NRR is almost entirely a function of value delivery. 

More usage = more tokens

It’s why FDEs are the craze (and to be fair, a form of FDEs are in this CRO’s plans). 

The contract work? That’s the stuff that can be outsourced to your new agentic CPQ and AI sales intelligence tools. 

But the work of quarterbacking value delivery. That’s the work of Customer Success. And that’s the stuff that cannot be outsourced to AI. 

You need a GTM team with value delivery as their first mindset. The stuff of CS.

I couldn't sit through Scrabble as a kid. Too slow. Give me Boggle. Two-minute rounds. Win or lose. Next.

But I've never felt more restless than I do right now.

My weekends:
- 100+ Slack channels
- Writing code
- Writing posts
- Prepping decks
- Trying to write a book
- Trying to be present with people I love

I read something from Scott Barker this week that absolutely nailed it.

We're in an "acceleration decade" and we're all burning out trying to keep up.

The answer isn't moving faster.

It's slowing down:
- Build depth, not rote skills
- Train your nervous system
- Invest in real connection
- Separate signal from noise
- Redefine success on your terms

We can't survive the AI acceleration without learning to slow down the clock.
