Absolute honour to speak at this panel yesterday at Raffles Hospital. 

I was reminded again healthcare is an inter-connected ecosystem. 

We had Dr Sarah Lu representing medical specialists. She’s a top breast surgeon! 

Dr Sidharth Kachroo, who is our Chief Health Officer representing Prudential Assurance Company Singapore  

With Yasminne Cheng moderating the panel in her charismatic charm and humour. 

And I represented what I know best:

The real voices, fears and questions of everyday clients. 

And I shared one key insight:

People don’t delay healthcare because they’re careless.

They delay because they’re uncertain.

When something happens: 

When there is a diagnosis or severe medical condition, clients would reach out immediately:

“Jas, am I covered?

Private or public?

Single bed or 4-bed?

Will this affect my future premiums?

Which policy (shield plan or company coverage) do I claim from first?”

Behind every question is the same fear:

“I don’t want to make the wrong move.”

Adequate protection isn’t enough. 

Underpinning the peace of mind is premium sustainability.

Hospital shield plan premiums rise with age, regardless whether there’s a claim.

So I help clients plan long-term:

Conduct proper cashflow analysis. 

Understand family history. 

And whether private coverage fits their future, not just their present.

Some people misunderstand about private health. 

They think it’s luxury. 

But buying private health care is simply buying flexibility and options when you need it the most at life’s lowest. 

2️⃣ Clients don’t want jargon. They want clarity.

I simplify everything in what I say to clients. 

Underwriting → Go through a list of questionnaire and declare Yes/No. Follow up checks if needed.

Claims → Step-by-step guidance on which plan pays first.

Benefits → How it fits into clients’ real life scenarios, not just using technical terms.

Fear delays care.

Clarity reduces fear.

3️⃣ Buying is the first half.

Claims support is the second half and the hardest.

This is our 5th year achieving this most highest accolade as a team
"Multi-Million Dollar Agency" (MMDA) award.

Before year 2025 ended, that goes to show how hard our small yet elite team has worked. 

But this year hits my team and I deep.

Two weeks ago, our team member Adrian Toh, underwent major surgery to remove a 10.5cm cancer tumour due to cancer relapse.

Adrian had been diagnosed with non small cell lung cancer few years ago. 

Just when things were looking well and happily in remission, his cancer relapsed. 

This time with super aggressive cancer cells attacking him. 

Today happens to be his first day of chemotherapy.

During this period of illness, Adrian did not stop. 

He continued to meet his clients while he was at his weakest.

Adrian submitted mostly protection plans.

I know it's not for numbers, but because he truly cares.

It's precisely Adrian himself has lived through his cancer (twice) and benefited from the protection coverage.

That's why he was willing to use his own experience to influence people around him to get the adequate protection. 

Adrian was also the final case that sealed our MMDA title this year.

Many teams achieve only with teams double our size. 

We may be 0.5x in size. 

We run 2x as productively. 

We own 3x the purpose to do the right things. 

2025 has been our most productive and most meaningful year.

Last night I was honoured to be invited to this “Optimal Leadership” book launch. 

The author was none other than Wilf Blackburn.  
 
It felt like watching someone I deeply respect open up the blueprint of his mind and his heart.

I went home, picked up the book, and started reading.

My usual practice was to skimp through. 

But this time, I was “sucked” in and read it word for word.

For the first time ever, I genuinely felt like I was sitting in a CEO’s chair. 

The First 100 Days chapter completely shifted how I view leadership.

You don’t wait six months to “observe.”

During the first 100 days, how do you conduct 1:1 interviews, understand their deepest motivations and know who are the right fit. 

The CEO role suddenly felt so real, understandable and humane.

Then there was one idea in the book that absolutely blew my mind:

➡️Hiring talent from outside the sector.

If they thrive, they bring in fresh ideas that disrupt the status quo.

If they don’t, they will likely exit the industry entirely instead of joining a competitor. 

It’s such a brilliant defensive strategy that only someone who has played on the global stage would think of.

And it reminded me of the Wilf I know personally.

Last night, he shared publicly the story of how he bought a plan from me when I was a 4th month rookie. 

During that time, I had just left my corporate HR role to start from scratch as a Financial Consultant. 

He shared as a CEO moving across countries and companies, he couldn’t possibly buy everywhere he went.

So he made a rule:

Whoever approached him first, he would buy from that person.

By sheer timing and courage, I happened to be the first.

He was describing to the rest how “smart” I was to make this bold move. 

But hearing him tell this story again brought back all the memories. 

Wilf opened the very first door for me into C-suite financial planning.

Maybe that’s why this book hit so deeply.

Because I don’t just see the CEO.

I see the human behind it all.

The boy who wanted to be a footballer.

The actuary who rose to become a CEO early in his career. 

Im sure it did not happen by chance, but by deliberate, strategic decisions and the right mentorship.

His humility is as striking as his intelligence.

And his leadership is as intentional as it is inspiring.

This book isn’t a memoir.

It’s a manual:

If you’re mid-career, read it.

If you’re stepping into bigger roles, read it.

If you’re already a CEO, you may want to read it twice.

Smart people learn from mistakes.

Wise people learn from others’ mistakes.

And this book lets you skip a few painful ones.

This morning at 5:30am, I entered the gym and picked the weights. 

It was not purely for fitness. 

It was about fear.

The quiet one that creeps up when life reminds you that none of us are invincible.

Recently I learned how fast we lose muscle after 40.

Then I looked at my dad’s health decline.

And a teammate around my age who just had a cancer relapse.

Suddenly the image in mirror and the number on the weighing scale did not matter. 

Only this thought hit me:

If I lose my health… 

I lose my freedom too…

That was the wake-up call.

This morning I went  back to my 5am life.

I’ve been going to bed earlier at 10pm.

Waking up before the world does. 

Rebuilding the discipline I used to own.

I contemplated signing up for a big gym package.

Then I stopped myself since I already have a yoga unlimited pass. 

My condo gym is already downstairs.

Then it dawned on me that the real membership I needed wasn’t a contract. 

It was just my own time commitment.

Today wasn’t a big workout.

It wasn’t impressive.

But it was mine. 

An accountability to myself. 

A promise to myself. 

I’m not waiting for a doctor, a diagnosis, or another reminder of mortality before I get my act together.

I just want to grow stronger again.

I just want to build back the muscles time quietly stole.

And keep the health that lets me live, work, love, and raise my kids with energy.

As I'm sitting down in a cafe, waiting for my next appointment. 

I went into introspective mode. 

Looking back at the last 340 days, 2025 stretched me in ways I never imagined.

It pushed my time management to its limits. 

Optimising every single hour every day. 

It’s truly no joke being a 100% full-time financial consultant serving 700 clients while also leading a team that has now protected 500 lives.

This year, I had the privilege to fly across countries to share my journey with fellow practitioners.

I stood on more stages than ever and at the same time, faced personal storms I didn’t see coming.

My dad’s sudden medical condition tested our family’s limits.

A timely reminder to me again that nothing in life is guaranteed.

Not health.

Not stability.

Not the future we assume we will have. 

I watched people I care about fall ill.

I saw careers shift overnight.

Yet I also experienced wins I never dared to predict.

If I had to summarise 2025 in one sentence:

Life is fragile but we are all far stronger than we think.

Here’s what this year has taught me repeatedly.

We don’t have limitless time.

So stop procrastinating.

Go do that thing you’ve always wanted to do now.

Do not wait for the perfect time or when you're ready.

Health is the one thing every sick patient wishes they had.

Stop Making Regret A Habit. 

Clarity beats being “always busy,” every single time.

You don’t need to hustle for the sake of hustling.

Focus on the strategic few things that truly move the needle.

Resilience is simple - Let's all learn to be a baby again. 

Fall down, Stand up, Repeat.

I’m walking into 2026 with clearer priorities and tighter boundaries, plus a strategic mind.

We can all build a big life without burning out but only with clarity and intention.

Here’s to closing the year strong. 

And stepping into 2026 wiser, lighter and bolder (especially when it comes to saying NO).

𝐖𝐡𝐲 𝐄𝐚𝐫𝐧𝐢𝐧𝐠 $𝟖𝟖𝐊 𝐩𝐞𝐫 𝐦𝐨𝐧𝐭𝐡 𝐃𝐢𝐝𝐧’𝐭 𝐒𝐚𝐯𝐞 𝐇𝐢𝐦

And this could happen to anyone. 

Last week, an article caught my attention:

A bank director earning $88,828 every month ended up with only $13,000 in savings.

Not $130K. Not $1.3M.

But rather he only has cash savings of roughly 3 days of his monthly salary.

($88,000 / 22 work days = $4K per day). 

Before anyone judges, it isn't rare in Singapore, especially when we live in one of the highest cost of living cities in the world.

In my line of work, I have seen many high-income earners fall into this same brutal trap, quietly and consistently.

Here’s the part most people get wrong:

1️⃣ High income doesn’t protect you. Control does.

This man’s household monthly expenses hit $46,000.

The money didn’t vanish. 

It was intentionally spent on a top notch quality of lifestyle.

Holidays, allowances and lifestyle perks. 

Everything adds up when you stop counting.

2️⃣ Lifestyle creep is a silent killer.

Despite owning a $2.9M home, he took two additional mortgages

Not for investment but yet to fund his daily living expenses.

He even rolled a $200,000 credit card loan.

High income + Over spending = Financial Disaster 

3️⃣ Retirement gets expensive if lifestyle gets expensive.

If he maintains the same standard of living at 65, he will need at least $10 million just to fund expenses till 85.

This is why I drill so deeply into my client's monthly expenses.

Retirement planning isn’t about how much you earn.

It is about how much you spend, save and invest and how long you want your lifestyle to last.

4️⃣ Wealth isn’t built by accident.

It's built with strategic long term intention.

You need to know your numbers.

You need to be honest with your spending habits. 

Only then you can be protected against the blind spots of "lavish spending"

I’ve worked with CEOs, CFOs and Senior Corporate Executives. 

All their income levels differ drastically. 

Whilst their spending habits may not be the same, there is an universal truth behind these case studies. 

The people who win financially may not always be highest earners.

Instead these are the ones who stay aware, stay intentional, and stay in control.

Hope this news comes as a good reminder:

It's not how much you earn. 

It's how much you spend.

It's how much you save and invest.

That gives you the last laugh.

Last Sunday in Hangzhou, I stood on stage as an MDRT representative for the Manulife Sinochem Kick-Off 2026.

I did something I had never done before.

It was to deliver a full 40 minutes Mandarin keynote presentation in front of 300 top China Senior Leaders and Financial Representatives.

I'm not going to lie. 

At some moment, there was this split second doubt “Can I really do this?”

But another part of me whispered, “If you're scared, you're on the right track!"

So I mustered all courage and stepped out (of my own comfort zone).

My topic was Closing High Net Worth Clients and Big Deals.

But what hit me hardest wasn’t the content.

It was what the experience taught me about people and problem-solving.

Because the truth is, no matter your job or industry, all the big problems are solved the same way.

1. See the real issue beneath the surface.
 
2. Clarify and discern the actual problem, not the "loudest" one.
 
3. Create win-win alignment so that everyone benefits, and people want to move forward with you, not against you.

4. Activate your resourcefulness and tap into your strengths to solve the complex problem.

And these are not just insurance lessons.

But they are true life lessons that I've learnt in my corporate days.

Toward the end of my keynote, I referenced the latest Chinese drama 《许我耀眼》because the show reminded me of something important:

Be observant. Be aware of what people need even when they don’t say it.

Then help others solve problems quietly, thoughtfully, and sincerely.

That, to me, is real leadership.

Personally for me, just standing on that stage in Hangzhou, speaking in a language I don’t normally present in…

I truly felt myself grow. 

This trip humbled me.

 It reminded me that courage doesn’t come when you’re ready.

Instead it emerges when you force yourself to get into uncomfort zones.

无论哪个行业，要解决“大问题”的逻辑，其实都一样。

1. 看见表面之下的真正问题。

2. 分辨并厘清真正的核心，而不是被“最吵的那个问题”带走。

3. 找到双赢的方向，让每个人都能受益，也愿意与你一起往前走，而不是对着干。

4. 发挥你的资源与优势，把复杂的问题化解、拆开、解决。

这不是保险的道理。

这是人生的道理。

在结尾，我也提到最近很火的华语剧《许我耀眼》。

剧里的人物很会观察、很会体察别人、很会默默解决问题。 

我告诉在场的伙伴：

“当你能更细心、更敏锐、更懂得用自己的力量帮助别人，你就已经比别人多了一束光。”

站在杭州这个舞台，我清楚感觉到：

成长从来不是在舒服的时候发生的。

是你明明害怕，却依然往前迈一步的时候。

Wef 1 January 2026, all secondary schools in Singapore must ban use of smartphones and smartwatches during school hours.

I was invited to Channel 8 National TV to share my perspective as a parent on my views about this move:

Here's my key points:

1. Phones disrupt focus. 

Kids scroll endlessly, their minds stay “active”, and many struggle to rest or concentrate after.

2. My daughter’s secondary school banned phones since 2019.

Every morning, students lock their phone in the classroom lockers and only retrieve them after lessons. 

3. At home, we set boundaries too.

My children get only 60 minutes of screen usage daily. 

The restriction forces them to prioritise and plan their screen time efficiently: 

- Homework Discussion, 

- Casual Chats/Text with Friends,

- Social Media (Youtube/Mothership News)

- Games

 Instead of endless scrolling, they actually plan their time.

To me, this is not about restriction.

It's about teaching digital responsibility early under parental's supervision.

Last Saturday, we wrapped up our final two client appreciation events of the year.

Without a doubt, we ended this year 2025 on a high note! 

This was our 15th client appreciation event this year.

And one insight stood out loud and clear:

Customisation wins. Every Single Time.

During this customised keyboard workshop, every client rolled up their sleeves to construct their own. 

After the event, each client walked away smiling from ear to ear.

It was because personalisation allowed them to be as creative as possible. 

For the first time they could create their own unique keyboards. 

They chose everything:

1. The keyboard structure (with or without number pad)

2. The “clickiness” level 

(I jokingly told them choose the loudest one if they want their boss to hear how hard they’re working. 

Otherwise, another good outcome arising out of this would be they would be sent back to work from home. Too Disruptive!)

3. The colour theme of their keyboard - ranging from Mahjong set, to all black to colourful ones)

These clients were not just building keyboards.

These clients were building something of their own.

And that’s where the real insight hit me.

If even a keyboard deserves this level of personalisation...

What's more our own life planning! 

This is why I always emphasise that in every client meeting:

You should never be buying an “off-the-shelf” product.

Your financial planning should be customised and built around what you truly need.

A married father will prioritise life coverage completely differently from a single professional.

A 58-year-old nearing retirement should not be taking the same risks as a 28-year-old with 30 to 40 years time horizon.

All of us are at different milestones of our life.

These milestones then reshape our priorities and what “important” looks like.

Last Saturday alone, many clients came with their family and friends.

We were not just assembling switches and keycaps.

We were creating memories together!

One client joked, “Jas… every time I type now, I’ll think of you!”

To me, that's a GREAT MISSION ACCOMPLISHED!

15 client appreciation events this year.

Imagine running at an intensity of organising more than 1 event per month. 

Here's the Universal Truth: 

Clients do not want products.

Clients want something crafted for them something that fits.

People are always strangely curious about how financial consultants actually work.

Do we have big monitors?

Do we have assigned seats?

Do we have a work schedule to follow?

So here’s a short video of how a typical office morning looks for me.

Watch at your own risk. (It's nothing fanciful, just routine work)

First thing you’ll see:

I have my own “To-Do” list everyday.

Totally love the feeling of striking the tasks one by one! 

To me it's highly addictive (for a Type 3 accomplisher) and highly therapeutic (Type 5 working alone)

And unlike many consultants, my team and I do not engage in cold calls or roadshow prospecting. 

Instead we focus on the most important element of human interaction.

That is to know and engage each of our prospect turned client in deep manner. 

My calendar is planned at least two weeks ahead.

Having a work structure keeps me sane to serve my clients well.

Right now, I’m replying to a prospect after our third Zoom call. 

To give her the clarity needed to make the best informed financial decisions.

Concurrently that’s where my iPad comes in: running multiple simulations and scenarios, toggling between projections, and stress-testing options.

What we do requires us to pivot quickly.

At the same time, I’m preparing an update for an overseas client reviewing his financial status and exploring how he can transfer more funds over.

Later today, I have two appointments:

 • A new prospect who attended our customised keyboard event — his review alone takes at least 3 hours of deep work for analysis. 

 • Another client discussion lined up right after - to review his retirement planning that was put in place 2 years ago.

Somewhere in between, I’m also coordinating with the publisher for my 2026 book.

And of course not to forget, squeezing in time to write this Linkedin post of th day.

Well, this is the real real day-to-day of a Top of the Table financial consultant.

As far as possible, everything is planned with strategic intention.

Using the most efficient way to generate the greatest effectiveness.

Staying in the flow is key to me, especially when I’m only in the office for a few hours everyday before heading out to meet my clients. 

Frankly, I'm thankful for this keyboard.

Productivity → GONE UP. 

Stress → GONE DOWN.

Final thought:

The setup may look simple, but the work is not just complex but to me, deeply meaningful. 

Every hour spent to guide my clients to help them navigate the nuances of life gives me great sense of satisfaction.
