Eight years ago, I left the startup world to build something of my own. I didn’t believe I was creative, so I started writing a newsletter just to prove myself wrong.

In 1999, Google tried to sell for $750,000. Every major tech company said no. The CEO of Excite turned it down because the search results were too good. 

That story kept me going through the worst three years of my life.

I was building a search engine for B2B sales. 1.4 billion contacts. Real-time verified phones and emails.

Simple to describe. Almost impossible to build.

My first CTO built the platform, got customers on it. Then quit.

My second CTO took my last $100,000. Promised he was all in. Was secretly working full time at a Fortune 100 company. It nearly broke me. Not just financially. Emotionally.

3am staring at the ceiling wondering if I was wasting my life. Choosing between paying rent and paying engineers.

I never tried to sell Seamless. But I would be lying if I said I never thought about it.

Larry and Sergey actually tried. Went door to door. Nobody would buy Google.

Sometimes the best thing that can happen is nobody gives you an exit. When there is no way out, you find a way through.

Then Austin walked in. Third CTO. Said the exact same thing: "We need to rebuild from scratch."

I almost lost it. "Dude, you are the third person who has told me that. Why the hell are you saying the same thing?"

But he did something the other two never did. Walked me through it play by play. Database structure. APIs. Connectors.

From my years at IBM and a Google search agency, I was technical enough to follow what he was laying out. And it made sense.

Last dollars. Last shot. I said yes.

We shut the platform down. Moved a thousand customers to manual fulfillment. Austin said 90 days.

Longest 90 days of my life.

Then the software launched. We went to every agency client: "You don't want the agency anymore. You want the software. It's better. It's faster."

They switched.

Zero to 5 million. Then 5 to 15. Then 15 to 50 and beyond.

Google is worth over $2 trillion. In 1999, nobody would pay $750,000.

Not genius. Not timing. Not luck.

Just not quitting.

The biggest FAKE myth I’ve ever heard in sales is that sales is not a numbers game.

I’m breaking down how we’re going to double your leads and closes in 2026.

What’s your leads goal this quarter, and how are you working every single day to achieve it?

A VC said yes to funding my company. But there was one condition. Move to Newark, New Jersey.

Leave my girlfriend behind. Live in a 500 square foot studio apartment. We packed my car that week.

Let me back up.

I read The 4-Hour Work Week in college. It rewired my brain. You could build a real company with anyone, anywhere, virtually. I'd already wasted two hours a day commuting to IBM Interactive just to stare at a screen. I knew there had to be a better way.

So when I started Seamless in 2015, I went all in on remote. No office. No commute. No wasted overhead. Five years before COVID made it mainstream.

Columbus, Ohio made it possible. A dollar went three times as far as San Francisco. Fifteen colleges within driving distance pumping out hungry grads who would grind with me. Central hub where you could fly anywhere in a few hours.

I didn't need $200K engineers. I needed hunger.

Then I started fundraising. Hundreds of pitches. Rejected over and over. Over 72% of all VC dollars go to just four states. Ohio isn't one of them.

Until Newark Venture Partners said yes. With that one condition.

So I told my girlfriend (now my wife) I was leaving. Not leaving her. But leaving Columbus. For a year. Maybe longer.

500 square feet. Seven days a week. Alone.

She'd visit once a month. I'd drive six hours back to Ohio when I could. Got to know every rest stop on I-76 by heart.

After a year, I moved back to Columbus. New York talent was too expensive. Office space was too expensive. Everything was too expensive.

I kept thinking… we're staring at computers. We can do this anywhere.

So I went home and built.

Zero to one million. One to five. Five to fifteen. Fifteen to fifty.

All remote. All distributed.

A city is just where your mail goes.

If you're a founder in Indianapolis or Nashville or Boise wondering if you need to move to San Francisco… you don't.

Build where it's cheap. Fly when you need to. 

And if a VC says relocate for a year to get the check, pack your car that week.

Entrepreneurs in new startups are 15% more likely to get divorced. That stat does not surprise me at all. 

I watched my CTO lose everything because of the wrong partner. And I built a $100M company because of the right one.

My first CTO (we'll call him G) was incredible. Showed up six, seven days a week. Could build anything.

Then he got a girlfriend in med school. Her message every single day: "You're getting paid too little. You're working too much."

Eight months later, G quit. He'd be a multimillionaire today.

My wife Danielle is a prosecutor. A super lawyer. We made a deal. Her compensation covered our expenses. My savings covered building Seamless.

That deal is the only reason Seamless exists today.

I was working 5am to midnight. Seven days a week. For years.

No movie nights. No date nights. No parties. I skipped everything.

And Danielle had her own moment. She told me once: "You're working way too much. I don't see you. I don't know if this is sustainable."

She was right. It wasn't sustainable.

But she didn't pull away. She kept showing up. Kept working her job. Kept covering our life so I could keep building.

That's what makes her different from G's girlfriend. Not that she never had doubts. She had every reason to doubt. She chose to support me anyway.

My friends came at me. My family came at me. People came at Danielle too. "Why isn't Brandon here?"

Her answer every time: "Brandon's building our company to change the world."

Her dream was to be one of the best prosecutors and lawyers in the world. My dream was to build a generational tech company. I went all in supporting her career. She went all in supporting mine.

G had a partner who pulled him backward. I had a partner who pushed me forward.

That's the difference between quitting and building a company worth over $100 million.

Your partner might be the most important "hire" you ever make.

P.S. G broke up with his girlfriend a few months after quitting Seamless. It didn't last but the millions lost quitting because of someone holding you back lasts forever.

The real reason you’re stuck in sales?
You’re chasing confidence… instead of a process.

Top reps aren’t confident because they’re special.

They’re confident because they’ve repeated the fundamentals so many times, they don’t panic when it gets hard.

If you want to level up fast:

- master one opener
- master one qualification flow
- master one close

Repeat this until you’re bored.

Confidence is a byproduct of enough reps. 
It's not a personality trait.

You are quietly killing your business with comfort.
Not laziness. Comfort.

Comfort sounds like:

“We’re doing okay.”
“Let’s not change what’s working.”
“We’ll fix that next quarter.”

Comfort doesn’t destroy you overnight.
It slowly convinces you you’ve arrived.

And in business, “arrived” is where growth goes to die.

The most dangerous place isn’t failure.
It’s “good enough.”
