I just finished reading a recent piece in the WSJ (link in comments) about how AI is advancing legacy tech modernization. It makes some valid points about how AI can help with code translation and documentation, but I think it overlooks the single most critical factor in whether these projects actually succeed or fail.

Context.

Any CIO staring down a massive modernization project, the speed of coding is rarely the biggest risk. The real risk is losing the decades of business logic buried in that legacy system. If you give a powerful AI agent a massive codebase without the proper context, you are essentially asking it to guess the intent behind decisions made twenty years ago. You might get cleaner code, but you often lose the nuance of how your business actually operates.

If you are planning a modernization initiative, don't just ask how fast the AI can code. Ask how well it understands what it is looking at.
