Everyone wants ‘wow factor’

No one can explain the ‘what.’..

A founder once told me he wanted one thing from the redesign:
“Give me a wow factor.”

So I asked:
“Wow… what?”

And he said the most honest sentence I’ve ever heard:
“I don’t know. Just… wow me.”

That was the whole requirement.

No users.
No goals.
No flows.

Just "wow"

So I did what every designer does in this situation:

I nodded politely,
died a little inside,
and opened FigJam to start the actual diagnosis.

Because here’s the truth founders never admit:

When a product owner says “We need a wow factor,”
what they really mean is:

“Something feels off but I can’t articulate it.”

-> The story is unclear.
-> The UX is confusing.
-> The path doesn’t make sense.
-> The product feels heavier than it should.

But “I can’t articulate the real issue” becomes “Add some wow.”

Spoiler: the wow wasn’t motion.
Wasn’t gradients.
Wasn’t the hero.

It was clarity.

We simplified the flow.
Reframed the value.
Removed the cognitive load.

And reduced the UI to the one thing the user actually needed.

He looked at it and said, “Wow.”

See?
Mission accomplished.

Forget the fireworks.
Fix the friction.
That’s the wow.

Leadership wants a redesign by Friday.

your entire roadmap just became a crisis center.

It happens all the time.

When every task is labeled “P1,”
you stop prioritizing and start surviving.

And here’s the truth no one likes to admit:

– Quality drops
– Decisions get sloppy
– UX turns into duct tape
– Design debt quietly explodes

Everyone feels busy but nothing meaningful moves

This isn’t a talent problem.
This is a focus problem.

Great products aren’t built by doing 14 things “right now.”

There’s one thing behind every good decision…
 
that no one talks about:

Your WHY.

And for a long time… I didn’t have one.

Because I spent years perfecting pixels
while ignoring the why behind them.

Truth is…

I did some of my worst work
when I followed instructions without questioning them.

Not the real user need.
Not the friction hiding beneath the surface.

Because clarity doesn’t come from adding elements.
It comes from understanding intention.

Understanding why this screen exists —
not just how it should look.

But here’s what most people forget:

You can have the cleanest UI in the world…
and still have a terrible product
if none of the decisions behind it make sense.

And listen —

Aesthetic?
Important.

Consistency?
Non-negotiable.

But let’s not confuse decoration with design.

When I finally started designing from purpose, everything shifted:

→ Better questions
→ Better flows
→ Better outcomes

I see this every day in SaaS. And here’s the wild part:

Most of them don’t need MORE.
They need less — a lot less.

Here’s the part founders don’t hear enough:

AI doesn’t create clarity.
AI inherits whatever clarity (or chaos) already exists.

And this is where most SaaS products quietly lose growth:

Teams add intelligence on top of an experience that isn’t aligned,
simplified,
or even fully understood.

I see this every week inside B2B SaaS:

Teams spend months building AI features…
while the real problems blocking activation are painfully simple:

- flows contradict each other
- users don’t know where to start
- product decisions still live in the past
- core value is buried under “nice-to-haves”
- hierarchy never matched the customer journey
- onboarding asks for effort before delivering value

And here’s the kicker:

AI doesn’t hide these problems.
It magnifies them.

Because intelligence can’t compensate for a weak foundation:

unclear value → faster churn
messy flows → faster confusion
inconsistent patterns → faster mistrust
bloated UI → faster overwhelm

AI makes everything louder — especially the parts you haven’t fixed.

So if you want AI to be a competitive advantage, 
here’s what your product actually needs first:

1️⃣ A value prop users “get” instantly.
If the message isn’t immediate, AI won’t save it.

2️⃣ A clean path to the first meaningful win.
AI is not the first win. Solving a real problem quickly is.

3️⃣ Navigation that matches the user’s mental model.
When your structure fights how people think, no AI feature can save the flow.

4️⃣ A system, not a collection of screens.
Consistency is what makes AI useful — it can’t operate on chaos.

5️⃣ A product driven by decisions, not additions.
Growth comes from removing friction, not stacking more features on top.

Here’s the truth nobody likes to say out loud:

AI is not the accelerator.
Clarity is.

AI only becomes a multiplier after the foundation is simple, 
intuitive, 
and aligned with how customers think.

Fix the UX first, and AI becomes a superpower.
Skip the UX, and AI becomes expensive noise.

Letting everyone add ‘just one more thing’...

Look — alignment sounds great… 
until it kills your entire product.

Not because teams disagree…

But because everyone gets to add “just one more thing.”

Suddenly V1 becomes a wishlist.
And nothing ships.

We’ve all been there.

You’re thinking:
“Okay… but if I say no, someone’s going to be annoyed.”
 or
“Maybe we should squeeze that in… it’s only one more button.”

Yeah.
That’s how every project quietly derails.

Here’s the truth nobody wants to say out loud:

UX doesn’t collapse from bad ideas.
It collapses from endless additions.

If you want progress instead of delays, do this:

1️⃣ Alignment ≠ agreement
Pick the goal, not every preference.

2️⃣ Someone owns the final call
One decider = momentum.

3️⃣ V1 should feel “too simple”
Users, not meetings, create clarity.

4️⃣ Everything else waits
V1 is for learning — not polishing.

5️⃣ Progress > perfection
Shipping beats consensus every time.

I know it’s tempting to keep polishing.
I know it feels safer to add more.
 
But the longer you try to make everyone happy…
the slower your product grows.

Everything else is just noise.

It went from:

 to
✅ “Start Free Trial.”

Nothing else changed

not visuals.

Here’s exactly how to fix your CTA:

1️⃣ State the action, not the idea.
If it’s a demo, say “Book a Demo.”
If it’s a trial, say “Start Free Trial.”

2️⃣ Make it specific.
“Join now” feels generic.
“Join 10,000+ teams using X” builds instant trust.

3️⃣ Place it where decisions happen.
Don’t make users scroll or hunt.
End every section with one clear next step — that’s where action lives.

Because people don’t want to “learn more.”

Ever notice how some days disappear…

and you can’t explain where the time went?

You weren’t lazy.
You weren’t unmotivated.
You were unstructured — and structure is what saves your focus.

Jumping between Slack pings, 
design reviews, client calls, Figma files, 
and “quick questions” that were never quick.

At the end of the day, I wasn’t tired — I was scattered.

But the truth?
I needed time-blocking.

And it changed everything about how I work.

Here’s what I learned:

🔹 Time expands to whatever you give it.
No boundaries?
Everything becomes urgent.

🔹 Clarity beats motivation.
Plan the day.
Execute without thinking.

🔹 One 90-minute block > 6 scattered hours.
Deep work compounds.
Switching costs everything.

🔹 Your best work needs space.
Kill distractions.

🔹 “No time” is rarely true.
If it's not blocked,
it won’t happen.

As a product designer, I do my best thinking in deep, uninterrupted work.

My approach is simple:

• One block for admin
• One block for creative thinking

Your product isn’t confusing.

On a travel B2C checkout, I added a small icon to the CTA.

Here’s how to think like a designer who drives real growth:

1️⃣ Start with a hypothesis, not a hunch.
Don’t test random ideas.
Start with a reason — what’s blocking action and why?

2️⃣ Change one thing at a time.
If you change layout, copy, and color at once,
you’ll never know what actually worked.

3️⃣ Clarity beats cleverness.
Your goal isn’t to impress — it’s to guide.
Every pixel should remove friction, not add it.

4️⃣ Measure what matters.
Don’t chase clicks or views.
Track actions that show intent — signups, purchases, completions.

5️⃣ Build a culture of experiments.
Testing isn’t a one-off task.
It’s a system that turns every design into a learning loop.

A/B testing isn’t about proving you’re right —
it’s about discovering what’s true.

When you do that,
you stop designing for aesthetics
and start designing for results.

Say what you do right away. No jargon. No metaphors. Just clarity.

2️⃣ One clear CTA above the fold
Don’t make users scroll to act. Guide them from the start.

3️⃣ Add social proof strategically
Show logos, testimonials, or stats—early. Make trust visual.

4️⃣ Make it skimmable
Use bold headlines, icons, and short copy. Format for eyes, not effort.

5️⃣ Remove distractions
One goal per page. No 7 CTAs fighting for attention.

After applying just these 5 changes, one startup I worked with saw:

→ 2× demo requests
→ 22% lower bounce in 14 days

Yet lately, the “back to the office” narrative is creeping back in.

And listen—
Some structure? Sure.

For many of us, remote work isn’t a perk—
it’s a lifeline for deep work.

Going fully remote changed everything—
More clarity. 
Less burnout. 
Work I was proud of.

And that energy?

Because when you design from stillness,
you make sharper decisions.

You create experiences that feel effortless—
not because they were easy,

Ever had a moment that made you realize…

you’re not as young as you thought?

Mine was explaining a floppy disk…
to a developer.

I just came back from a design review…

A B2B SaaS product.
Enterprise. 
Millions in revenue.

And right there on the main action bar:
💾 A literal floppy disk icon.
In 2025.

So I gently asked:

“Have you considered switching this to a bookmark?
It’s modern, familiar, and instantly recognized.”
The room froze.

One engineer squints at the screen and goes:

“But the floppy is universal…”
Universal for who, exactly?
Everyone born before WiFi?

I ran a quick test later:

Anyone under 25 stared at it like it was ancient pottery.
But every single one recognized the bookmark in 0.1 seconds.

The funniest part?

Once we swapped it, the whole interface suddenly felt modern.

Sometimes the biggest UX improvements aren’t new features.
They’re removing old metaphors that silently age your product.

If you’re a founder or PM, here’s the truth:

- Modern UX isn’t about trends.
- Most products look older than they are.
- Because no one questions the tiny stuff.

And when something looks outdated?
Users assume everything else is too.

Design speaks before words do.
It says “modern” or “stuck in 1998.”

And sometimes…

one tiny micro-pattern
(one icon!)
can change the entire perception.

Make your product feel current — not nostalgic.
