And then it asked me to leave.

A fancy degree.
Really good pay.
My dream job.
And one visa rejection later, it was all gone.

I didn’t fail.
My career didn’t fail.
The system did.

Since then, I’ve been meeting immigrants

3 Bags. 2 Months of Rent. $88,000 in Student Debt.
That’s everything I carried with me when I stepped foot in the US 🇺🇸 4.5 years ago.

The excitement of “living abroad” didn’t last long. 
Reality hit hard
Loneliness, survival struggles, 
and the constant pressure to prove myself.

My first year looked like this:
-- 15-hour days balancing part-time jobs, coursework, and endless internship applications.
-- Carrying furniture across campus for $16/hr just to cover groceries.
-- Missing Diwalis, weddings, and even funerals back home.
-- Sending out 1000+ applications, facing rejection after rejection.

But things slowly turned.

After graduation, I found my rhythm again:
-- Landed my dream role as a Data Scientist at a top gaming company.
-- Now, working as a Senior AI Engineer in a YC-backed startup.

Hard truth:

My last 4 years in the US 🇺🇸 looked like this:
-- Earned an Ivy League degree
-- Got my first Data Science job without prior experience
-- Reached the finals of Columbia Startup Competition (Top 5)
-- Spoke at TEDx, Browserstack, AI Camp @ Google and more
-- Mentored 800+ students to break into AI
-- Founded my own company

But my last 4 years also looked like this:

I was moving furniture in the US 🇺🇸
Getting paid $16/hour.

No fancy title.
No career plan.
Just an $88,000 education loan in my name.

Fast forward to today.
I’m a Senior AI Engineer
at a YC-backed startup
earning more than $90/hour.

From the outside, life looks “sorted”.
But here’s the truth 👇

I’m going to say this bluntly because no one else will.

Applying to jobs and waiting
is not a strategy in 2026.

It’s hope.
Here’s what actually works 👇

1️⃣ Your LinkedIn profile is not a resume.
It’s a landing page.
Stop being humble.
Show everything you’ve built.

Everything you shipped.
Everything you survived.

Your headline, photo, and banner decide
whether someone clicks
or scrolls past your career.

2️⃣ Before you DM anyone, comment.
This is where most people mess up.
Engage with posts from people you want to work with.

Be early. Be genuine. Say something real.
I’ve literally hired people
who commented on my posts first
and then DMed me later.

Not because they were the smartest.
Because they showed intent.

3️⃣ Apply. Then don’t disappear.
After every application:
Reach out to VPs.
Directors.
Hiring managers.

A short, human message beats
a perfect resume sitting in an ATS.

4️⃣ If you want startups, talk to founders.
Not recruiters.
Not portals.
Founders hire fast
when they see hunger and clarity.
Send a connection request.
Add a note.
Mean it.

5️⃣ Create content, even if it’s messy.
Not to be an influencer.
To be visible.
Because once you’ve engaged and connected,
your posts show up on their feed.
And now you’re not a stranger anymore.

-- Here’s the uncomfortable truth:
Most people lose jobs
not because they’re bad
but because no one knows what they can do.

I’ve been on both sides.
Applying.
Hiring.
Getting ignored.
Choosing from a crowded inbox.

Stability isn’t a job anymore.
It’s being seen, trusted, and remembered.

This is how job hunting works in 2026.
Not referrals.
Not just applying.
Not waiting.

Leverage > luck.
If this helped, save it.
If it pissed you off, good.
That means it worked.

2 things that changed my life:


1. Taking action before I felt ready.

I waited for confidence.
Clarity.
Perfect timing.
None of them showed up.

The moment I moved anyway
things started compounding.

2. Sharing in public, even when it felt uncomfortable.

Posting before I was “good enough”.
Talking before I was “polished”.
Building while learning.

Opportunities didn’t come from being perfect.
They came from being visible.

Looking back,
nothing magical happened overnight.

I just stopped waiting.
And started.

If you can build with AI,

Skills without distribution = invisible.

Together?

I’ve seen insanely smart people lose opportunities
because no one knew what they were capable of.
I’ve seen average builders win
because they showed their work every single day.

The scary part?
Most people are still:
 • Collecting certificates
 • Waiting for permission
 • Hoping the market “improves”
While the game has already changed.

The next 5 years won’t reward who’s smartest.
They’ll reward who builds + communicates.

If you can:
 • Build real things with AI
 • Explain them clearly to the internet

You don’t need a perfect plan.
You don’t need luck.
You don’t need permission.
You just need to start.

Starting beats waiting.

Not perfect.
Just real progress.

Most networking events aren’t built for immigrants 🇺🇸
They’re built to filter them.

Not intentionally.
But effectively.

I’ve been to rooms where:
-- The dress code mattered more than the work
-- Small talk mattered more than substance
-- Your accent quietly decided how long the conversation lasted

I didn’t feel out of place because I lacked talent.
I felt out of place because 
the room wasn’t designed for people like me.

Over time, I realized something uncomfortable.

Immigrants don’t struggle because they’re underqualified.
They struggle because access is uneven.

Interviewers love asking this AI system design question:
“Can you explain RAG?”

RAG (Retrieval-Augmented Generation) is an AI architecture pattern
that lets LLMs retrieve external data before 
generating an answer, instead of 
relying only on their training data.

𝗪𝗵𝘆 𝘄𝗮𝘀 𝗥𝗔𝗚 𝗶𝗻𝘁𝗿𝗼𝗱𝘂𝗰𝗲𝗱?

Before RAG, teams either:

- trusted the LLM’s internal knowledge (hallucinations galore), or
- fine-tuned models for every new dataset (slow, expensive, brittle).

The result:

- outdated answers
- no grounding in private data
- low trust in production AI systems

RAG fixed this by separating knowledge from reasoning.

𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗶𝗱𝗲𝗮 𝗶𝗻 𝟯𝟬 𝘀𝗲𝗰𝗼𝗻𝗱𝘀:

-- Ingestion
Raw documents (PDFs, docs, DBs, APIs) are chunked and embedded.

-- Retrieval
User query is embedded → relevant chunks are fetched via semantic search.

-- Generation
Retrieved context + user query are sent to the LLM to generate a grounded answer.

The LLM doesn’t “guess”.
It answers using your data.

𝗘𝗮𝗰𝗵 𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗽 𝗮𝗻𝘀𝘄𝗲𝗿𝘀 𝗮 𝗱𝗶𝗳𝗳𝗲𝗿𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗾𝘂𝗲𝘀𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻:

↳ What knowledge do we have?
↳ What is relevant to this query?
↳ How do we generate a safe, accurate response?

𝗪𝗵𝘆 𝗶𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗿𝘃𝗶𝗲𝘄𝗲𝗿𝘀 𝗹𝗶𝗸𝗲 𝘁𝗵𝗶𝘀 𝗮𝗻𝘀𝘄𝗲𝗿

↳ Because it shows you understand:

- grounding and hallucination control
- system design beyond “ChatGPT wrappers”
- how production AI actually works

Anyone can call an LLM API.
Very few can design reliable AI systems.

𝗖𝗼𝗺𝗺𝗼𝗻 𝗺𝗶𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗸𝗲𝘀 (𝗴𝗼𝗼𝗱 𝗶𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗿𝘃𝗶𝗲𝘄 𝗯𝗼𝗻𝘂𝘀):

- poor chunking strategy
- weak retrieval → bad answers
- stuffing too much context into prompts
- skipping evaluation and monitoring

Better retrieval > bigger models.

Everyone thinks this is success.
It wasn’t.

Moving from India to the US was a choice.
I wanted better exposure.
Better work.
Better life.
So I did my Master’s there.

But moving from the US to the UK?
That was not a choice.
Visa tortured me.

I spent years optimizing the wrong thing.

Because impact isn’t about better charts.
It’s about statistically sound decisions + a story leaders trust.
