Most SEO audits aren’t strategic. They’re just organized screenshots.

A DTC brand came to us recently, sharing their “SEO audit” from a previous agency, thinking it could be helpful.

Sure, we'd be happy to take a look. Maybe they hit something creative that we missed.

We expected to see some kind of roadmap. A strategy/plan. At least some prioritization.

Instead?

Just a bloated PDF of exports from very familiar industry tools.

— No recommendations.
— No context.
— No mention of business goals.

And worse, technical issues flagged that literally can’t be fixed on their CMS.

A lot of pass/fails, which isn't really helpful for anyone.

A real SEO audit should do three things:

 1. Identify issues that actually impact performance

 2. Contextualize those issues within platform and business limitations

 3. Prioritize actions based on ROI, not technical purity

Without prioritization and potential outcomes, you don’t have an SEO strategy. 

You really just have a to-do list written by a crawler.

No “perfect” framework.
No single source of truth.

Search behavior is fractured across platforms, across devices, across algorithms.

So what can you control?

↳ External mentions/backlinks that build trust
↳ And a constant loop of data collection to guide every move

But only if you're measuring the right things.

𝗕𝗿𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝘁𝗲𝗮𝗺𝘀:

1. Ask for proof
Ask for frameworks, case studies, and the process that show how they 𝘁𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗸, not just what they did.

2. Make sure their strategy aligns with your goals
If their proposed SEO game plan doesn’t align with your broader marketing goals, you’ll constantly butt heads (or waste budget)

3. Be accessible
SEOs need feedback to iterate. Don’t ghost them. Block time. Share context. Treat it like a partnership.

4. Stay open-minded
You don’t have to say yes to everything. But if it’s aligned with your goals and doesn’t conflict with your brand voice... test it.

5. Be patient
Not passive, but patient. SEO isn’t paid media. Momentum compounds. Trust the process and the people running it.

𝗦𝗘𝗢 𝘁𝗲𝗮𝗺𝘀:

1. Show your work.
Frameworks, timelines, strategies, and receipts. Don’t expect blind trust. You need to earn it.

2. Set expectations
Clients don’t live in SEO dashboards. Walk them through what “normal” looks like at each stage. Demystify the journey.

3. Don’t make SEO the hero
Respect the brand. Fit into the bigger picture. Don’t bulldoze UX or content for the sake of rankings.

4. Ask about the relationship
Not just “how are the results?” but “how’s the experience?” SEO partnerships are emotional as much as tactical.

5. Follow through.
Promise what you'll do and do what you promise. Your word is everything.

This is how SEO success happens. By building mutual respect, clarity, and shared goals.

When I was growing the agency in NYC, I thought I needed an office.

It felt like a rite of passage.

A physical sign that things were working and that we were growing. We were legit. We were “real.”

Then came headcount.

It didn’t matter whether we needed the extra hands, but just having a biggger team felt like the next box to check.

Looking back, both of those things were vanity metrics.

They didn’t improve client results.
They didn’t grow revenue.
They just made the business heavier.

But that’s the trap most founders/entrepreneurs fall into, especially in places like New York City where social proof is loud and the pressure is louder.

Eventually, you may realize: growth that actually matters isn’t about what people see, but more about what works.
