My passion for working with sales people emerged from my own experiences as a commission-only, cold-call professional, and from my experience in training close to 3,000 people. In 2012 I gave away my belongings, sold my house, and traveled to India to study meditation with a renowned teacher I had come to respect.

My time in India included six weeks in silent meditation, with deep discoveries of the mind and the nature of human connection. My teacher had just purchased a facility in North Carolina, and, as my way of giving back, I returned to the U.S. and accepted a role as Director of Sales, to brand and position this new retreat center. 

The center was a place to unplug from technology; to relax in nature, renew, and discover ancient practices of the East that address modern problems of the West. I was successful in drawing outside speakers and yoga retreats. The retreat center became profitable, is now booked to capacity, and continues to thrive. 

After some time, though, I wanted share what I’d learned with the world. And, based on my deep expertise and unique and successful contribution to sales training, 

I realized I could make the most impact in sales and with salespeople—which led to The StandOut Sales Experience.

Director of Sales and Marketing

Heartland Payment Systems

In this senior executive role, I was tasked with formalizing the official sales and leadership program I’d created for our company. After much success with my sales training programs, the position of National Training Director at this Fortune 1000 payment-processing and technology provider was created especially for me. 

Rooted in hands-on practical exercises and experiences, my training taught employees how to set an appointment, run an appointment, and follow up — with a focus on interpersonal connection, interpreting body language, and inspiring prospects to take action. This progressed into a “train the trainer” program for managers. I created motivational videos and audio recordings, and I regularly hosted corporate calls of 1,000+ people.  

With two to three trainings a month, I was guiding the entire organization through a turnkey sales, leadership, and communication process, forty people at a time. Our company stock went up, and our sales reps were successful. But I wanted to deepen something further within myself, and I left the company to focus on personal development. I’m proud to say my methods are still in use in the company today.

National Training Director

I stepped into this Regional Director role to oversee 17 managers and 125 sales reps across Texas, Oklahoma, and Arkansas. 

Around this time our company suffered a sophisticated attack and data breach, tarnishing our company’s reputation. Much of our sales training was still based on pitching, presenting, closing — and it wasn’t working. What was the magic ingredient that would bring us success in the field? High-priced consultants were brought in. We tried everything.

On a hunch, I began to train my new hires in a different way, focused solely on human interaction and emotional intelligence. I stopped teaching sales, pricing paperwork, and product knowledge altogether. Instead I taught only interpersonal dynamics and mindset. Attraction. Body language. Authenticity. Rapport. Connection. Listening. Presence. Enrollment.  High emotional Intelligence is indeed a greater indicator of professional success than education level or sales experience. And it worked! 

Within 60 days, my new hires were producing double that of the company veteran average. And within several months, my Region’s sales numbers were double the company average. Soon, other Regional Directors were sending their team to my trainings in Dallas. Our Human Resources staff attended to experience it for themselves, and left with a recommendation that our entire company take part in my two-day workshop. 

The process I created was the beginnings of my StandOut Sales Experience program.

Regional Director

In this position, I cultivated the sales performance of 10–12 relationship managers. I was responsible for recruiting, hiring, and training my team, and discovered my talent for sharing what I know about the power of authentic connection. My approach was unconventional for this unregulated industry.

Customers were skeptical and resistant. Rates and charges varied widely among vendors, earning us all the reputation of promoting confusion and charging hidden fees to unsuspecting merchants. I had to change my team’s mindset of selling on price, and taught them to present authentically, create win-win relationships, and convey value.  

My team saw success when they started connecting instead of closing, listening instead of telling, and enrolling instead of selling. This “we” instead of “me” thinking allowed them to understand the perspective of the client, and guide them into committed action. 

The result was a turnaround in my team’s performance and a promotion for me to lead a larger team.

Division Manager

When I started this commission-only sales job in Merchant Services, I received very little training: Pull car into strip mall. Knock on 20 doors. Get blown out. Go home. Cry in your beer. Try again tomorrow. I was terrible, making less than $10,000 my first year. 

But I didn’t give up. I knew the key to becoming not only a good sales person but the person I wanted to be had to do with learning to speak from the heart; I knew that was also key to having people listen to you and follow your lead. Although I had always been shy and awkward, I wanted to lead and to make a difference in the world. This position would be turn out to be a tool to develop these qualities in key ways.

Because our product was viewed as a commodity, a typical sales call focused primarily on price. And because the credit card industry is glutted with unscrupulous scoundrels, merchants were cynical and abrasive. So I had to stand out. Almost by accident, I began to shed my identity as sales person. I had nothing to lose.  When I just started to be myself. . . everything shifted. 

I came to understand the role my own mindset played in my efforts, and that the power of authenticity, connection, integrity, presence, and contribution are far more important than features and benefits or having the lowest price. Because of my success, I was promoted to train other sales reps in my approach.
