Sometimes when I have introduced myself as #TheLinkedInGuru (Teacher) I have jokingly said that GURU stands for "General Understanding, Relatively Useless". Well, I believe GURU stands for "Gets to Uncover the Real Usefulness" instead.

Since I retired at the end of 2007, my focus has been volunteering and devoting my time to being a Professional Networker / LinkedIn Guru (Teacher), teaching Networking and LinkedIn and I have trained thousands of professionals in how to maximize their networking skills and best utilize networking tools.

Networking is the life-blood that feeds the process of building relationships. Networking is important in all aspects of our lives. I believe that LinkedIn is one of the best tools available to help you find the right people, connect with them and build long-term relationships. That's what I do and that's what I can help you do.

#TheLinkedInGuru Employment For Seniors is the premier resource linking mature adults with employment opportunities.  If you are 50 years of age or older, we are here to help you find employment!  If you are a Central Ohio employer, our mature, talented, skilled and dependable job seekers will provide significant value to your organization. 

EFS has provided career assistance and resources to nearly 30,000 clients, free of charge, over the past 40 years.  Our trained volunteer job counselors work with clients, prepare them for their job search, and connect them to employers through our job referral process.   Registration is an easy ½ hour appointment and can be scheduled by calling the EFS office at 614/863-1219.

For several years now I have volunteered my services to EFS as a Professional Networker/LinkedIn Guru and as a trainer focusing on how seniors can use LinkedIn as a tool for networking and job search.  I wholeheartedly support the mission of this fine organization.

One of the most difficult things I’ve encountered and I’m still learning to master, even after running a business for nearly three decades, is hiring well.

Recruitment has never been simple for me.

I genuinely like people.
I tend to see potential before I see risk.

And at times, I carry my team’s challenges more personally than a textbook leadership model would advise.

That is part of my ongoing work as a leader.

But there is one area where I am deliberately firm:

I do not tolerate a toxic work environment.

Over time, I’ve learned that toxicity is rarely loud.

It often shows up quietly, in tone, in pressure, in how feedback is delivered, and in whether people feel safe to speak.

Culture is not created by strategy decks or job titles.

It is shaped by the emotional atmosphere leaders set every day.

I actively invite my team to tell me when I’m wrong.

I do not believe leadership means being unchallenged.

And when I miss the mark, I apologize—not to diminish authority, but to model accountability.

As leaders, we must be deeply aware of this truth:

Our unregulated stress, frustration, or ego can easily become someone else’s daily burden.

When employees spend more time managing personalities than producing results, something fundamental has broken.

Work can be demanding.
It can be high-pressure.
It can require excellence.

But it should never require people to emotionally survive their leaders.

Leadership today calls for more than intelligence or ambition.

It calls for emotional maturity, the discipline to lead without exporting our internal struggles onto others.

I am still learning.
Still refining.
Still choosing growth over comfort.

But I remain clear on this:

We don’t just build businesses. 
We build environments.

And the environment we create determines whether people merely comply—or truly thrive.

So here’s the question I’ll leave us with:

Are we creating workplaces where people feel safe enough to speak up? 

Are we empowering teams to hold leadership accountable when that safety begins to erode?

I spend some of my most precious time with marginalised communities, especially children.

And every single time, they teach me far more than I teach them.

Last Saturday, we hosted a Christmas party for children who don’t often get to slow down, dream out loud, or be asked what they want for their future.

After the food, the laughter, and the music, we did something simple.

We sat at tables. We put away phones.
And we created vision boards together.
What happened next stayed with me.

Children who are so often told what they lack started showing us what they see.

Homes. Careers. Peace. Love. Joy. Safety. Purpose.

I’m not sure what happens next.

I’m sitting with a full heart today.

I’m deeply grateful for life, for resilience, and for the grace that carries us through different seasons.

I miscalculated AI and for a moment it cost me focus.

I went deep very fast.
Learning. Testing. Creating. Launching.

AI made everything feel possible.
And honestly, it was intoxicating.

But at some point, I had to be brutally honest with myself.

I was learning more than I was implementing.

Creating more than I was converting.
Launching faster than I was sustaining.

And I am seeing this everywhere.

There is a sea of AI tools right now.
Every day a new one.

Every day someone wants to show you something “game changing”.

If you do not learn how to say no, you do not fall behind.

You lose focus.

Here is the hard lesson I learned.

Any AI tool that does not solve a real human or business problem is dead on arrival.

AI does not fix poor systems.
It exposes them.

If AI finds you disorganised, unclear, or without proper change management, it does not help.

It multiplies the chaos.

We do not need every tool.
We do not need to master everything.
We do not need to chase every update.

What we need is alignment.

What problem am I actually trying to solve in my business right now.

What drains time, money, or energy every single week.

What would move productivity, sales, or visibility this month.

That shift changed everything for me.

I stopped collecting tools.
I started building clarity.

I grew up on a coffee farm.

Every Saturday, we all went out to pick coffee. 

It was labor-intensive, repetitive, and exhausting and I hated it.

My escape was books.

While others picked coffee, I read. 

That wasn’t rebellion, it was instinct. 

My dad worked in corporate Nairobi, and even at a young age, I admired his life the structure, the discipline, the dignity of thinking work. 

Being spotted with a book earned me a reason not to pick coffee. 

Learning became my way out.

That’s when I understood something most people learn much later:

there is honest work, and there is leveraged work.

Coffee picking is necessary, but it doesn’t compound. 

You work, you get tired, and the cycle repeats. 

Books, systems, and learning do the opposite they multiply effort over time.

One of the strongest lessons from my father was this:

hard work without redesign is a trap.

Today, AI is the modern version of that lesson.

Repetitive emails, manual planning, endless follow-ups, tracking tasks in your head this is digital-age coffee picking. 

If judgment isn’t required, it shouldn’t be consuming your energy.

Digital transformation isn’t about replacing people.

It’s about freeing humans from work that never required human intelligence in the first place.

This is the thinking I teach in my AI Clinic not tools for hype, but systems that create leverage.

I’ve noticed something uncomfortable when intelligent professionals talk about AI.

They sound informed. 
They mention the tools. 
They follow the conversations. 

Yet somewhere beneath all that knowledge, there’s a quiet panic, because none of it has translated into consistent income.

We are living in one of the most technologically advanced moments in history, yet more people are mentally exhausted, overstimulated, and emotionally drained than ever before.

I work in digital transformation. 

I believe deeply in technology. 

I see its power every day.

But I’m also seeing something we don’t talk about enough: the quiet cost of always being connected.

Our minds rarely rest.

For me, walking has become non-negotiable.

I walk every day, usually 45 minutes or more, sometimes over an hour. 

Always outside, in the bush, with my dogs. 

No phone. No notifications. 

Just crickets, butterflies, squirrels movement, and space.

That walk is not exercise for me.
It is regulation.
It is healing.
It is how I come back to myself.

As we step into 2026, we need to widen the definition of digital transformation. 

Yes, we need smarter systems, better tools, and faster innovation. 

But we also need to be far more intentional about mental health, wellness, and digital boundaries.

Digital detox is not about rejecting technology.
