After leaving my career in world-class academic institutions, I wondered how I could stay connected to leading research, top professors, and leadership development insights.

I was able to build a partnership with another world-class institution Duke CE to provide coaching and facilitation to learning and development programs for global organizations.

After several of years working directly with students, I pivoted to a Director Level at the intersection of faculty and students. I loved, once again, advising world-class faculty and playing an active role in shaping the impact an MBA program can have on student’s lives and careers. But, after reaching the top, I recognized that the industry was no longer meeting my top values and I needed a shift out.

Stepping into this role it was evident to me right away that I was on a sinking ship, so I let my boss know my plan to right the ship with the best team possible and fix the leaks, and then I’d be planning my exit out. 

I led a strategic charge to create the biggest impact I could, by hiring and promoting an all-star team, overhauling broken systems, processes, and infrastructure, and advocating for the first successful allocation of resources in a decade, as well as leading the charge to hire my replacement for a seamless transition out. 

I was able to leave a department better than I found it. And have the clarity to know exactly what I wanted next, going full-time in my company.

What I learned is that it’s hard as hell to manage a stressful role, take care of your well-being, and take the steps to navigate a career transition, but it’s possible with a strong toolkit of career development skills and a clear roadmap of necessary steps.

I was super excited to land the exact role I was targeting: one with a split-focus on improving program operations and in developing/refreshing career management curriculum to improve coaching outcomes. 

The first thing I did (beyond building strong internal relationships and trust), was to take a high-level strategic look at the career curriculum, team processes, and technical systems to see what was broken, what could be improved, and what didn’t exist but was needed to help 900+ students a year learn what the needed to learn to land their dream roles and improve the student experience along the way.

During my time there I made a lasting impact on the development of our career management and job search curriculum, consulted with a team of 8 career coaches/advisors on how to deliver compelling content and improve learning outcomes, created a process to track metrics and student outcomes, and improved operational processes and communication and efficiency within our department and internal teams, amongst other notable things. 

I’ve been able to leverage all of the insights gained from teaching 1000s of students and to develop a curriculum in my own business that is highly effective and efficient, while also being intentional about landing the right job, not just any job.

I took this role as an opportunity to start building my career coaching skills and test coaching as a viable career path. I sat on the other side of the table from individuals who would tell me, "I have nothing to offer," when I was looking at a resume that said something very different!

I knew then that I wanted to be able to make a bigger impact for these individuals and that it was going to take going deeper than just basic communication skills to get to the root of the issue.

During this time, I coached 100s of students on how to improve their communication skills and on-the-job skills (presentations, feedback, difficult conversations, and business writing) and eventually learned that a large portion of people's struggles came from communicating while navigating their job search. 

I also developed standardized resources and course content to cover basic communication topics, so our entire team of consultants could go deeper in their 1:1 support with students, and provide resources for them to continue their learning after sessions. 

The experience, insights, and lessons learned in effective communication, improving your communication confidence, building your personal brand, and public speaking I leverage with clients every single day.

And, the mission I created for myself back then of building people's confidence and helping them see their unique value is still my mission today.

After learning about the field of Organizational Behavior, I knew it was where I wanted to take my career next, but wasn’t sure how to break in without the experience and expertise. 

I started networking and building relationships with notable individuals in the field, volunteering my time, and learning about faculty’s pain points to see where I could add value. 

After several months of persistence and demonstrating where and how I could add value, I was able to break into the field and quickly climb ranks into my ideal role. 

I spent several years in this role and loved every single second of getting to work with world-class faculty, advising them on process improvement for research design, mentoring business students, and wearing multiple hats across multiple departments. 

This position was one that helped me open the door to many further career opportunities and it would have never happened without understanding how to get in front of the right individuals and communicate a compelling personal brand story, things I teach my clients today.

I was a lead Teaching Assistant for multiple world-class professors, across multiple semesters, for Organizational Behavior, Leading and Managing, Negotiations, Ethics, Team Dynamics, and Entrepreneurship.

Prior to my higher-education career, I had an entirely different career comprised of various management roles across a wide variety of industries from retail, to hospitality, to real estate, to food and beverage, and law. 

I loved being able to come into an organization (or help build one from the ground up) and improve operations, business processes, and employee development programs, as well as directly interact with customers to improve the customer experience.

Some of the greatest management lessons in my career were in these early days of learning and growing on the job, it was a steep learning curve that I enjoyed and have been able to now refine over my career.

- Engaged in a device bring-up on a secure x86 system using Coreboot in C with Bootguard to boot a Linux-based OS
- Developed test suite for manufacturing facilities to verify device functional operation using Bash, C, C++, Java and JavaScript
- Developed new tools in Bash and C to facilitate debugging certain classes of issues related to parsing raw binary data read from firmware chips and SSD images
- Used AWS Cloud Services (S3, API Gateway, Lambda, EC2 instances) to manage internal tools and deploy external services

- Worked on embedded Linux applications and libraries in C and C++14 to manage network, diagnostics, and other configurations related to Cellular Data Services
- Resolved architecture and tooling issues to fix race conditions, reduce code base by thousands of lines, and reduce unit test times
- Designed new CLI-tool in C++ to test, configure, and evaluate status of wireless daemon for testing and compliance purposes
- Participated in software design lifecycle (requirements gathering, design, implementation, testing, maintenance)
- Designed a service and APIs to expose local Bluetooth hardware capabilities with remote devices over a network connection
- Domain-owner for IPC and SOA communication layer used in multiple applications

- Worked on team to predict spectrum channel usage to facilitate spectrum sharing
- Analyzed data and developed tools to help analyze, tune and visualize big data in R
- Algorithms used included LightGBM, XgBoost, ETS, ARIMA
- Data was visualized in a GUI made with plot_ly and Shiny

- Awarded a Spot Award for extra effort in analyzing older Electronic Warfare program problems
- Tested incoming products to provide advice and suggestions for repair
- Prepared internal and external reports documenting the testing process and results
- Learned how to use various lab equipment, read electrical schematics, conduct proper and consistent measurements, various stress test methods

- Tested 6000+ units on the manufacturing floor, including functional tests for CCAs and ESS testing for end units
- Assisted simple duties on assembly line such as torquing to requirement and cleaning contact areas

- Supported others with administrative tasks such as gathering RFQs or determining specs and compliance
