After several of years working directly with students, I pivoted to a Director Level at the intersection of faculty and students. I loved, once again, advising world-class faculty and playing an active role in shaping the impact an MBA program can have on student’s lives and careers. But, after reaching the top, I recognized that the industry was no longer meeting my top values and I needed a shift out.

Stepping into this role it was evident to me right away that I was on a sinking ship, so I let my boss know my plan to right the ship with the best team possible and fix the leaks, and then I’d be planning my exit out. 

I led a strategic charge to create the biggest impact I could, by hiring and promoting an all-star team, overhauling broken systems, processes, and infrastructure, and advocating for the first successful allocation of resources in a decade, as well as leading the charge to hire my replacement for a seamless transition out. 

I was able to leave a department better than I found it. And have the clarity to know exactly what I wanted next, going full-time in my company.

What I learned is that it’s hard as hell to manage a stressful role, take care of your well-being, and take the steps to navigate a career transition, but it’s possible with a strong toolkit of career development skills and a clear roadmap of necessary steps.

I was super excited to land the exact role I was targeting: one with a split-focus on improving program operations and in developing/refreshing career management curriculum to improve coaching outcomes. 

The first thing I did (beyond building strong internal relationships and trust), was to take a high-level strategic look at the career curriculum, team processes, and technical systems to see what was broken, what could be improved, and what didn’t exist but was needed to help 900+ students a year learn what the needed to learn to land their dream roles and improve the student experience along the way.

During my time there I made a lasting impact on the development of our career management and job search curriculum, consulted with a team of 8 career coaches/advisors on how to deliver compelling content and improve learning outcomes, created a process to track metrics and student outcomes, and improved operational processes and communication and efficiency within our department and internal teams, amongst other notable things. 

I’ve been able to leverage all of the insights gained from teaching 1000s of students and to develop a curriculum in my own business that is highly effective and efficient, while also being intentional about landing the right job, not just any job.

I took this role as an opportunity to start building my career coaching skills and test coaching as a viable career path. I sat on the other side of the table from individuals who would tell me, "I have nothing to offer," when I was looking at a resume that said something very different!

I knew then that I wanted to be able to make a bigger impact for these individuals and that it was going to take going deeper than just basic communication skills to get to the root of the issue.

During this time, I coached 100s of students on how to improve their communication skills and on-the-job skills (presentations, feedback, difficult conversations, and business writing) and eventually learned that a large portion of people's struggles came from communicating while navigating their job search. 

I also developed standardized resources and course content to cover basic communication topics, so our entire team of consultants could go deeper in their 1:1 support with students, and provide resources for them to continue their learning after sessions. 

The experience, insights, and lessons learned in effective communication, improving your communication confidence, building your personal brand, and public speaking I leverage with clients every single day.

And, the mission I created for myself back then of building people's confidence and helping them see their unique value is still my mission today.

After learning about the field of Organizational Behavior, I knew it was where I wanted to take my career next, but wasn’t sure how to break in without the experience and expertise. 

I started networking and building relationships with notable individuals in the field, volunteering my time, and learning about faculty’s pain points to see where I could add value. 

After several months of persistence and demonstrating where and how I could add value, I was able to break into the field and quickly climb ranks into my ideal role. 

I spent several years in this role and loved every single second of getting to work with world-class faculty, advising them on process improvement for research design, mentoring business students, and wearing multiple hats across multiple departments. 

This position was one that helped me open the door to many further career opportunities and it would have never happened without understanding how to get in front of the right individuals and communicate a compelling personal brand story, things I teach my clients today.

Prior to my higher-education career, I had an entirely different career comprised of various management roles across a wide variety of industries from retail, to hospitality, to real estate, to food and beverage, and law. 

I loved being able to come into an organization (or help build one from the ground up) and improve operations, business processes, and employee development programs, as well as directly interact with customers to improve the customer experience.

Some of the greatest management lessons in my career were in these early days of learning and growing on the job, it was a steep learning curve that I enjoyed and have been able to now refine over my career.

I had the privilege of leading the Adecco Customer Success team (formerly the National Account Management team). My focus centered around providing long term, strategic solutions, as well as just-in-time support, to keep up with today's changing workforce environment. I also acted as a subject matter expert for our sales team as they lead pursuits across the enterprise. The accounts in my portfolio ranged across industries and required a unique mix of talent ranging from light industrial, clerical, office professional and technical skill sets.

As a VP of Sales, I focused on the design and implementation of strategic solutions for national account clients. I am most proud of the meaningful and long lasting relationships I built based on trust and delivering exceptional results. I worked closely with a team of 17 professionals, including business development representatives, account managers and administrative/operations personnel to build the staffing business for inVentiv. The team had varying levels of experience, ranging from sales veterans to incoming new business development leads. Led a strategic initiative to gorw our business with small to mid-size biotech and pharmaceutical clients that had true staff-aug needs ranging in clinical expertise. I reported directly to the President of Strategic Resourcing during this time and worked hand in hand with the leader of the FSP sales team. A large part of my role was blending the cultures from the three legacy organizations that made up the new staffing sales team. We were responsible for generating over $170M in sales annually.

National Director of Sales

In this role, I was responsible for the day to day direction of account managers, recruiters and operational staff. I was accountable for managing the P&L statement for the Tampa office and working with finance to develop strategies to achieve growth goals. We were knee-deep in integration activities resulting from the acquisition of Kforce Clinical Research and, as such, my most important responsibility during this time was continuing to grow our business while retaining my top-performing talent during a time of great uncertainty.  I also built the Global Recruiting Center (GRC) during this time under the direction of Kathy Hardy, which is still in place and has resulted cost savings of millions of dollars for the inVentiv organization. I was tasked with working alongside finance to revamp the comp plans for all staff in the Tampa office and ensuring that the team was trained on the subsequent changes. Change management was critical in this role, I learned a tremendous amount about the importance of clearly communicating your vision for the future to your team in order to gain buy in and collaboration where there had been fear and resistance,

I was responsible for the direct oversight of staffing and delivery team, including recruiters, account managers, and lead generation specialists. This included performance management of associates and candidate job coverage in assigned markets in an effort to meet all client deliverables. I was part of the senior management team at KCR and worked closely with the president of the division to design and implement initiatives, like an overhaul of the long standing recruiter compensation plan. I was involved in client development strategy and client delivery. One of my biggest areas of focus was continuous improvement of our processes and colleague training to ensure that we were consistently delighting our clients with top-notch results. I also worked with our business development team to ensure that we could deliver against what we were selling and that our value proposition was operationally sound. I always remained close to the "desk" as a leader as I attributed my in-depth understanding of the ever changing clinical research industry to be key to my success leading the team.

Group Director (KCR was acquired by inVentiv Health in April on 2012)

In this role, I was responsible for managing a team while still working as a independent producer. It was critical that I strike the right balance between my management responsibilities and maintaining my personal production. I accomplished this by investing my time in the team members that deserved it most - those that were intelligent, hard working and determined to be successful. I also felt it was of the utmost importance to lead by example so it was always my aim to live the expectations that I placed on my team. This is always a tricky position because you are both a manager and a competitor - building trust on the team and doing what was right for the team first was a very important cornerstone to success in this role. I am extremely proud of the relationships I built at KCR and seeing the recruiters and sales people that I hired throughout my career there go on to enormous personal and professional growth is one of the thrills of my career.

I was responsible for recruiting passive candidates in an extremely tight market to fill high level positions within major pharmaceutical clients. We utilized a number of techniques to accomplish this, including cold calling, networking and working with professional organizations. I consistently found the best candidates through referrals. This role really taught me the foundation of how to build trust quickly with other people. Responsiveness and consistent follow up are key components of building a successful relationship with someone and the recruiting industry is no different. By treating my candidates with respect and through open and honest communication, I was able to rapidly build a strong network of great professionals, willing to help me when I asked. I am proud to say that I still keep in touch with candidates that I placed in this role and seeing them go on to continued professional success is a joy for me.
