A childhood friend recently sent me this photo of me and my sister (hey Meghan Lang!) from the mid-80s.

Back then, status brands and logos were everything. I was DYING for a pair of Guess jeans, but could only afford Lawman from Marshall’s. Womp womp.

Esprit was my one real access point to true 1980s cool. My mom somehow had an in with an annual Esprit sample sale… in some woman’s basement. Absolute nirvana.

So when I spotted an Esprit pop-up in L.A., I jumped at the chance to own a new piece of my childhood fashion iconography.

People often say to me, “are you still doing that graphic design thing?”

Oh—you mean my 26-year career?

And then a few months ago, a dude literally said to me, “How’s your little business going?”

Little. Business.

I’m genuinely curious—do people say stuff like that to men?

This reminded me of something Miranda July—the author of All Fours, a novel about a middle-aged woman actively pursuing her wants and needs—said on the Modern Love podcast.

She bristled at the assumption that the success of her novel was a surprise to her, that she couldn’t possibly have masterminded something ambitious and political and deeply resonant.

She was just supposed to be shocked and grateful at her good fortune.

She absolutely knew what she was doing. She did it on purpose. And it was huge.

I notice this happening to women all the time. Our work gets diminished. Our success gets attributed to luck rather than strategy. Our businesses get called “little” even when they're thriving.

Sometimes it feels like we're not supposed to be too ambitious. Or too proud of what we've built. Maybe we're supposed to downplay our success to make other people feel comfortable.

But truly—f*ck that.

So yeah—I am still doing the graphic design thing. And I’m out here proudly creating intentional brands for other women who want to play big and own their expertise.

Last year my son told me he thinks I “work all the time.” Then the tables turned.

We were talking about his skepticism about college and how little interest he has in conventional office jobs. I was trying to convince him I was a shining example of work/life balance and freedom.

He wasn't buying it.

Back then, any time spent at a desk seemed untenable to him. He couldn’t see how much less time I spend working than someone in a traditional corporate role.

Fast forward to this year: He's building a dropship business, deeply influenced by grindset influencers. He's doing his senior year online to give himself more time for it.

For a while, that meant hours at his desk. Late nights. Weekends. Work always tugging at him.

I was the one saying, "you need to chill!"

He’s been a bit more balanced lately. I think he’s starting to figure out his own limits. And that’s something you can only do by testing them.

I admire his work ethic, but watching him go through that intense phase made me think more carefully about the difference between working hard and grinding.

To me, working hard means showing up with focus and intention. It’s real effort, but it’s not all-consuming. It leaves room for a full life outside of work.

Grinding feels different. It’s pushing through at all costs. The voice that says “more, faster, now,” even when you’re exhausted.

This week I shared my adjective goals and how I added “spacious” last year, for 2025.

That choice was a direct response to how grinding had quietly crept into my own work the year before.

I still work hard. But now I pay attention to how it feels. If something drains my energy or compresses my time too much, I look for another way.

I also spend a lot of time not working. Playing. Resting.

I'm doing it for myself. But I'm also trying to model sustainable work for my son. He's only 18. I can’t have him burning out before his frontal lobe has even finished forming.

What’s your take? Where do you draw the line between grinding and working hard?

Forget resolutions. These 4 adjectives have helped me build a life that feels good.

A few years ago, a brilliant business coach introduced me to the concept of "adjective goals," and it completely changed how I make decisions and think about success.

→ Instead of setting specific financial targets or thinking about what I wanted to have, Ariana Wolf encouraged me to think about how I wanted my life to FEEL.

My three core adjective goals haven't changed since I first set them in 2020.

There have been moments when I’ve achieved all three. Sometimes just one or two. But for the last 5+ years, they’ve been my north star for every major decision, personal and professional.

Last year, because 2024 felt too hectic and grind-y, I added a fourth: 

s p a c i o u s. 

And ooh—has that one been helpful.

For example, I had been doing design sprints over 2 days, but midway through 2025, I realized it would feel much more “spacious” to do them over 3 days. So now I do.

And every time I’m invited to something, I ask myself whether it will affect my sense of spaciousness. If I’m not super excited about it and it will make me feel at all overwhelmed, it’s a big no.

A few weeks ago, I was telling my son about adjective goals and I realized that right in that moment, I felt like I was there—I was feeling all four of my adjective goals. And that feeling has persisted, at least for now.

But if one or two fall off, no biggie. I know how to get back to here.

My favorite thing about adjective goals is there’s no single path to achieving them. The route you take can change depending on where you are in your life and your current priorities.

Financial goals are important. You need to know where you want to go.

But without adjective goals, you may get stuck in a cycle of endless striving. 

If you’re purely chasing numbers, you may lose track of WHY you’re striving or what you’re striving for.

So instead of asking what you want to accomplish in 2026, I’ll ask this:

✨ How do you want to feel? ✨

This year, I’m holding onto all four of mine: free, independent, secure, and spacious.

My year has gotten off to a bit of a rough start.

I started January with big goals and a solid plan. But what’s the cliche? The best laid plans can turn into a shit show?

Yeah, I think that’s how it goes.

Several things haven’t gone as expected…

For the first time in years, I didn’t feel great about how I managed a project and completely lost control of my time for a couple weeks.

I’m usually good at treating myself like a client (and not letting myself down), but I even skipped my regular LinkedIn posts (gasp!) and weekly newsletter — the first time I’ve missed one since launching it last April.

AND one of my big goals for this year is  s p a c i o u s n e s s,  yet I somehow managed to wildly overschedule January.

I did just get back from a few nights in Mexico City, which was incredible… but not exactly restful.

BUT in a couple weeks, I’m heading to LA to celebrate Lunar New Year with my family. A second New Year feels like a perfect excuse to hit the reset button (although I’m actually trying to hit that button now, today).

Onward and upward.

"Can you just write the copy for me?”

A woman reached out last year after hiring a web designer. The site was looking good, but the project had stalled because she realized the designer was expecting her to supply the copy, and she had no idea what to say.

She asked if I could just write the copy once the website design was finished.

I had to say no. Because copywriting isn’t something you tack on at the end. The words should be the foundation for the design, not the garnish on top.

Most designers work a la carte. Logo here. Website design there. And oh yeah—you'll need to write all the copy yourself or find a copywriter who can shoehorn some words into a finished design.

This is how I used to work too, which now feels absolutely bonkers.

I had a whole Google Doc workbook designed to help people write their copy, but it was a super onerous task that often led to long delays and a ton of editing on my end.

Now I do it differently. Thank god.

All my branding packages include copywriting because the words should drive the design, not get squeezed in at the end. And now my clients never have to face that blank page or delay their project while scrambling for copy.

A client emailed me recently: “A prospective client told me she was reading my website and all the language really spoke to her and she was thinking ‘yes, girl!’”

That's what happens when copy and design are built together from the start.
