If you're an Ashkenazi Jew between the ages of 17-35 living in the greater Toronto area, you might be an eligible donor for Daphne Goldberg. She's been diagnosed with a rare cancer that requires a stem cell transplant. Even if you're not between those ages, you probably know people who are. Encourage them to sign up--they'd be doing a huge mitzvah (note: a mitzvah means commandment, but many people translate it as "good deed." In this case, it's a commandment to save someone's life.).

If you've been connected to me or following me for a while, you know I share information about job scams. Today, I'm sharing a non-employment scam that's taking place right here on this platform. 

Last week, I connected with a woman named Sophia Baker (see the screenshot below of her profile). We had a connection in common, which made me feel a bit more comfortable accepting her connection request. Shortly after connecting, she sent me a message introducing herself. Sophia noted she was from Tennessee, USA. I thought that was a bit odd, because I figured most people know Tennessee is in the US. Maybe she thought I wasn't familiar with US geography because I'm in Canada, I decided. 

The next day, Sophia messaged me telling me she worked in Forex trading, and she asked me if I knew what it was. That's when alarm bells started ringing. I decided to do an image search for her profile picture. I discovered several social media profiles (including another one on LinkedIn) with "Sophia's" profile picture and different names. I've included a screenshot of the results. That's when I decided it was time to block "her." I didn't take screenshots of our conversation--otherwise, I would have included them here. But, you get the idea. 

This goes beyond a pitchslap (when a new connection sends you a message five seconds after connecting trying to sell you something). This was a concerted effort to steal my data and potentially hack into my company's systems. If you're accepting a new connection request, do a little digging. Many people on this platform are exactly who they say they are, but not everyone is so scrupulous.

This post is a continuation of yesterday's post about a scam here on LinkedIn. 

If you didn't read yesterday's post, I talked about how a new connection tried to scam me. When I accepted this person's connection request, I had the slight sense of reassurance because they were connected to another person in my network. After I blocked the new connection, I figured I should reach out to our mutual connection, Darryl, to let him know about the scam. 

Darryl had sent me a connection request a few months ago, and again, because we had connections in common, I accepted. The lack of profile picture (see the screenshot) didn't completely bother me, because I'm connected to other people without profile pictures (not many, but a few). When Darryl initially connected with me, I think I did a cursory check of his profile. He had a lengthy "about me" section and there was an employment history, so it didn't raise any flags. Since connecting, Darryl never messaged me or engaged with my posts, which also wasn't particularly alarming. Plenty of my connections never do. I'm not sure what made me take a closer look at his profile before I sent him a message, but what I saw raised those aforementioned flags. All of his comments were along the lines of "You look nice!" or "Nice smile" on women's posts (see screenshot). The comments sounded too similar to one another to be spontaneous. This isn't normal behavior. LinkedIn isn't a dating site, as I've written in the past.

Lesson learned? Take a couple of minutes to look at connection requests' profiles before accepting. If it seems off, there's a chance you're right.
