Black people, pay attention to a pattern that keeps repeating.

There's a situation unfolding right now around Unc, the man behind the Tendernism videos that helped put Destination Smokehouse on the map. For a long time, many people assumed Unc was the owner. 

That assumption sat unchallenged because it benefited the brand. His presence, warmth, and credibility built trust and brought people in.

Then Keith Lee showed up to review the spot and offered Unc a $5,000 tip on camera. Unc was pulled away by a handler. Shortly after, the actual owner started appearing more prominently in the videos once the upside became impossible to ignore.

I don't know Unc's actual arrangement. Maybe he has equity. Maybe he's been compensated fairly. Maybe this is exactly what he signed up for.

But whether or not his specific situation reflects exploitation, the fact that so many people immediately recognized a familiar pattern tells you everything.

Black cultural capital drives brand growth. Black presence creates trust and brings people in. Then when real money shows up, the lines that were never clearly drawn suddenly matter.

That pattern is why I originally focused on getting Black people into tech. When I started, the numbers were clear. Less than 4% of the tech workforce in Canada. Less than 7% in the U.S. Meanwhile, tech companies were using Black culture to drive adoption, relevance, and billion dollar valuations.

We drive attention and trust. Ownership rarely follows.

Many of us have lived some version of this. You become the bridge, the face, the credibility layer. And the moment real money shows up, someone reminds you where the line is.
Representation without equity is a trap. Visibility without ownership is fragile.

If you bring the audience, the trust, or the culture—demand clarity on ownership, equity, and compensation from day one. Don't wait until the money shows up to find out where you stand.

The conversation around Unc isn't about one man or one restaurant. It's about a system that keeps repeating itself because people keep pretending it's accidental.

Pay attention to the playbook. Protect yourself accordingly.

I wish it wasn’t so common for a Black person to hype themselves up, be proud of their work, or manage their emotions privately, and still have someone feel entitled to police it.

It happens everywhere. People just pretend it doesn’t.

Sorana Cirstea complained to the ref about Naomi Osaka cheering herself up between Cirstea’s serves. The ref said it was allowed. Cirstea still wasn’t satisfied and confronted Naomi directly.

Think about how insane that is.

Naomi gave herself a pep talk between serves. Players do that constantly. That’s literally part of competing at the highest level.

But when she does it, it becomes a problem worth stopping the match over.

The irony is sitting right there. Tennis holds Novak Djokovic in the highest regard, a player legendary for managing his mental state on court. Self talk. Hype. Emotional releases. That’s praised as mental toughness and championship mentality. Nobody calls the ref. Nobody tells him to tone it down.

Naomi does a version of the same thing and suddenly it’s “too much.”

That’s the experience of Black women in a nutshell. Joy gets treated like provocation. Confidence gets treated like arrogance. Taking pride in your work gets reframed as attitude.

I see it in professional spaces all the time. Black professionals celebrate a win and someone says they are making others feel bad. They take credit for work they actually did and it turns into a lecture about humility and being a team player. Then the same behavior from someone else is called leadership.

Naomi was within the rules. The ref confirmed it. The issue was never the rule.

It was the comfort level people expect Black women to maintain for everyone else.

Naomi doesn’t owe anyone smallness. Neither do you.

University of California, San Francisco

In this role, I supervise, coach, train, mentor, evaluate workloads, develop new standards of practice, and verify task and project completion for administrative analysts. I also participate in Administrative, Financial, Human Resource, Educational, and Project Management Initiatives. As part of my day-to-day responsibilities, I provide executive, academic, and analytical support for 4 faculty members. Duties include performing complex administrative tasks, managing highly complex calendars of appointments, drafting letters & correspondences on behalf of the assigned faculty, minutes, preparing itineraries and agendas, and composing detailed travel plans, and coordinating retreats, interviews, and scheduling meetings with internal departments and external organizations. On an interim basis, I am acting as a Co-Program Coordinator for the Thoracic Surgery Residency Program.

Administrative Lead

Kaiser Permanente

In this role, I provided primary administrative support to 5 leaders, specifically the SVP and CNE, VP, Chief of Staff, and 2 Executive Directors. I provided interim support to 3 Sr. Directors  as well as backup support to the National RN Residency Program. I was responsible for generating agendas and meeting summaries for national meetings, scheduling complex meetings, evaluating existing processes and implementing changes, creating the onboarding and offboarding process and documentation for our department, and providing mentorship and development to the Administrative Coordinator II.

Executive Assistant III

I provided administrative support to the Executive Director, Sr. Director, Director, and Program Managers of the National RN Residency Program. I assisted with the onboarding and orientation of 20 employees, developing customized toolkits for each employee. I also supported the Executive Director of Care Transformation and Technology Integration. 

On an interim basis, I managed 11 total executives, providing calendar management, meeting coordination and support, travel and expense management, supply ordering, and contract and invoice management.

Executive Assistant II

Alameda County

I worked on the Agenda side in the Clerk of the Board of Supervisors office where I was responsible for managing 114 active Alameda County Boards, Commissions, and Committees, analyzing processes and procedures, recommending operational changes, attending and clerking board meetings (and producing subsequent agendas and minutes), and providing logistic and administrative support for management and leadership. I compiled bi-weekly dashboard reports and maintained financial controls by liaising with the Treasury Department, maintained internal databases, and provided backup coverage for the reception desk in the County Administrator's Office.

My role primarily involved the printing, duplication, punching, and binding materials for meetings. As part of the quality checks I performed during the printing process, I occasionally proofread and edited pitch decks for clients. I was accountable for co-managing inventory and generating supply orders. I also coordinated with clients and their associates for deliveries for completed projects.

Production Assistant

In this role, I owned and managed the reporting process for the Talent Acquistion team. I created a weekly dashboard report that provided high-level overviews of key recruiting metrics to the Executive Leadership Team. In my first 90 days, I cleaned up 3 years of recruiting data and helping to identify opportunities and redefine goals. I assisted the People Team with background check oversight, followed up with candidates during the interview process, streamlined processes, and self-delegated administrative tasks, increasing the number of hires by 94%. I also coordinated with the Director of Talent Acquisition and our legal partners to revise offer letter templates, increasing offer acceptance rates by 81%.

Talent Acquisition Coordinator

I provided operations, project, and administrative support across 6 departments for Executive Directors and their subordinates. I trained and developed incoming administrative professionals, created onboarding and offboarding procedures, developed departmental procedure guides, and led a SharePoint organization project for the Business Management Office. I also worked with the Procurement Department to initiate and/or extend vendor contracts and conducted monthly data audits and reporting for the Credentialing a Privileging team.

Operations Specialist II

As a Center Manager, I was responsible for hiring, onboarding, and cross-training a team of 6 employees to provide growth opportunities and ensure adequate bench strength across the organization. I generated monthly work schedules, completed required financial reports, managed operational budgets, and maintained inventory. I also identified opportunities to increase efficiency and revenue, taking my center from #427 (4th quartile) to #90 (1st quartile) in less than 1 year. I generated $17K in revenue through follow up and bid close outs in Q4 of FY17 alone. 

I took a step back to facilitate more work-life balance and my role was primarily taking lead on digital imaging and production scheduling and coordination of full-service orders. I maintained joint accountability with the Assistant Manager for center finance, labor, and inventory management.

I'm a jack of all trades who is a master at creating an exceptional client experience. While my background has primarily been providing operational functions for companies, I am currently employed as the Administrative Lead in the Cardiothoracic Surgery department for the University of California San Francisco (UCSF). As an administrative professional, I provide primary support to 4 faculty members with complex calendars in addition to drafting letters & correspondences, preparing itineraries, meeting agendas and minutes, and coordinating retreats, interviews, and meetings with other departments in addition to numerous external organizations. I also provide interim support to our Thoracic Residency program. As a leader, I manage a team of 3 administrative officers. I am responsible for supervising, coaching, and mentoring the staff, evaluating workloads, developing new standard of practices and training for the staff, ensuring the timely completion of tasks and projects, meeting regularly with staff and addressing issues as they arise, and providing backup support when staff is on leave.

Previously, I was employed as the Executive Assistant III for the National Patient Care Services Department at Kaiser Permanente.
