I am not a fan of Tony Robbins, but I do have to credit him with one of the most memorable quotes I've ever heard:  "Life is not happening to you, it's happening for you." 

This invitation to evolve your mindset from victimhood to empowerment takes just a moment to decide to accept.  Learning to live as though you truly believe it takes time, patience and the willingness to sit with uncertainty and discomfort. 

Did I believe that "life was happening FOR me" when my Instagram and Facebook accounts were hacked last year, causing me to lose thousands of connections I had spent several years of time and money building?  Nope.  But in truth, I never really enjoyed them, and while I collected "friends" and "followers,  those platforms never brought me a single client.  

I had a decision to make: pay the hackers hundreds of dollars for an "access code" to regain access to my Meta accounts, start over from scratch on those platforms, or start focusing my energy on using other strategies to market my business.  I chose SEO and LinkedIn. 

Fast forward, a little over a year later.  A potential client just signed up for a free consultation (the first step toward working with me).  One of the scheduling questions asks, "How did you find me?"  Her answer made my day:  "I found you through an online search and started listening to your podcast (ADHD-ish)." 

Her search query?  

"Who is the world's best ADHD-informed business coach?" 

Several of my peers are also named, but I was the first in the list.  If you don't believe me,  enter the question word for word and see for yourself.  

The moral of the story is this: Sometimes we lose things in business. A launch goes bust.  That "best-selling book" we have worked on for a solid year?  Sleeper.  Our biggest client decides to "go in a different direction."  Or some hacker steals 10k connections you have spent years cultivating.  

It's scary, upsetting, and feels totally unfair, and we crash out and catastrophize when they happen. But sometimes those very things force us to let something go, try something new, and when we do, the results are better than we ever got with the thing we lost.  I "tried" SEO some time ago and decided it was too boring, tedious, and complicated.  Now,  I only wish I had found the right person to make it make sense to my ADHD brain sooner. Life is not happening to you.  It's happening for you.  

You can find reasons not to believe it.  But I am finding that choosing to adopt this mindset has helped me stay more emotionally regulated, confident, optimistic,  curious, and future-focused.
