Due to compounding building maintenance costs, mounting equipment repairs, and inability to secure base operating funding required from other levels of government or corporate sponsors since inception, the facility had to make the difficult decision to close Dec 28th, 2018.

Founded, owned and operated by Petra Kassun-Mutch, with a vision to create the greenest and socially responsible dairy in the world,  the original Fifth Town Artisan Cheese Company was a for-profit community-led, B-Corp certified (Canada's 8th),  social enterprise focused on making cave-aged, handcrafted goat and sheep's milk fine cheeses from 100% locally sourced, high-quality milk in Prince Edward County, Ontario.  As North America's only Platinum LEED dairy, and with Ontario's first bio-wetland for whey disposal on site, and over 38 product awards including three-time Grand Champion, the innovation-focused dairy won the Premier's Award for Agri-Food Innovation in April 2009. Fifth Town also owned Fifth Town Productions (book publishing/distribution). Kassun-Mutch also led the creation of the Ontario Cheese Society and served as board chair for seven years. Revenues in excess of $1.5M/annum. The company was sold in 2013.
