"How do I combat ageism? My resume has been a perfect fit (I mean like 99% skills and background match), and I am not even getting interviews -- I know it's my age -- HELP!"

I received this message from a job seeker last week.

Here's what the research says: When resumes contain age signals, older candidates are 34-62% less likely to receive a callback — even when skills are identical.

Your resume might be focused on your age instead of your value — who you are and what you do.

Here's a checklist to remove age signals from your resume:

→ Trim your timeline to the most recent 10-15 years with dates
→ Move older experience to a "Previous Experience" section without dates
→ Remove "Over 30 years of experience" from your summary
→ Delete graduation dates
→ Drop the parentheses around your area code (that's a holdover from landline days)
→ Remove your street address — city, state, and zip only
→ Ditch Times New Roman and Garamond for modern fonts
→ No objective statements
→ No double spacing (holdover from typewriters)

After we removed the age signals from Cheryl's resume, she landed three interviews in one week and was offered the position she wanted most.
