Is it a Meta problem, or is it a conversion problem?

As traffic behavior shifts and algorithms evolve, we’re seeing a downward trend in conversion rates across almost every vertical. But too many brands are quick to point the finger at Meta when their ads "stop working."

The reality of the user journey:

- Beyond the Ad: Even if Meta is doing its job, a poor on-site experience will kill your ROI.
- Audit Everything: You need to be breaking down conversion rates by product and landing page to find the gaps.
- User Experience is King: If you aren’t constantly improving the journey after the click, your performance will suffer regardless of how good your creative is.

Don't just audit your ads, audit your site. If the user journey is broken, no amount of "algorithm hacking" will save your brand.

As the CMO at Obvi, I live and breathe acquisition. But if retention is not dialed in, it’s like running on a treadmill. Lots of effort to stay in the same place. 

That’s why I find it crazy that more brands aren’t paying attention to the leaky bucket that’s marketing consent.

The average Shopify Plus brand has a 39% marketing consent rate at checkout. That means 61% of customers you paid to acquire will never get an email. Never get an SMS. Never enter a flow.

And it’s not because your creative is bad or there’s a fault in your CRM. It’s because a lot of brands run on the generic infrastructure Shopify provides. (No shame there, we did for a while too).

The fix isn't aggressive or gimmicky. It's more structural. For example, adapting how consent is collected based on region, purchase history, and consent status.

Because privacy laws aren't the same in California and Berlin, and a first-time buyer shouldn't see the same consent experience as a returning customer if you want to get max opt-ins.
