El Mencho is dead.
Mexican news shared yesterday.
But raising a family here is what made it real.

The city closed
Cars being burned
Buses aflame on roads.

Then silence...

Waiting.
Watching.
Preparing.

My safe place 24-hours ago was now:

People running in airports
Families stuck outside
pinned in place.

A new feeling set in.
I was living on the edge.
Any moment it could pop off.

Yesterday... It popped.

While damage was mainly commercial
A message was sent to everyone
that the cartel is present

In Mexico...

While the people are kind.
And the weather is largely ideal
the safety trade-off here is very real.

Not that Oakland was heaven...
Nor America universally peaceful.
But it's a violence I was familiar with.

This was new for me.

Fortunately...

My family is fine
The birds are chirping
& neighbors are laughing again.

But I've changed.

This was a moment for me.
Made me consider our safety plans 
And how to keep my family away from harm

Should things pop again.

Thanks for the well-wishes and kind messages

Sometimes I feel like quitting BEM.
I’m not supposed to say that, right?
Not because I’ve lost hope…

It’s the founder’s challenge of:

Walking into the unknown.

Without a gaurantee of the outcome.

Knowing there’s a solution there…
And using your might to find it.
But being unable to see it.

After another 3am night
Falling asleep with crystal clarity 
Then waking up with abundant confusion

I turned away from ChatGPT advice
Which affirmed ALL my thoughts

And turned to BEM members
for real life feedback.

In a few hours I had multiple brothers 
on the phone. Helping me pressure 
test my ideas and real scenarios.

Giving feedback only they would have 
as senior executives, entrepreneurs,
investors and board directors.

End of the day I had leaders from across
the US committed to leading 
our 2026 forums.

Clarity on all four BEMs pillars…

And relief that it would be alright.

Last year, I organized a private dinner for Black Executive Men.
Toward the end of the evening, three execs pulled me aside and pressed me.

“Why did you bring us here?”

We had the room.

- The food
- The drinks
- The photos

The stated goal was bold:

Decide the future of corporate Black men.

I’d plastered it all across LinkedIn.

They’d flown in.

But something was missing.

There was laughter - but no depth.
Conversation - but no weight.
Proximity - but no gravity.

The room grew restless.

Called to the moment.

In real time, I made an audible.

- I circled the room.
- Shifted the energy.
- Reset the conversation.

The tone changed instantly.

- Smiles faded.
- Glasses lowered.
- Postures shifted inward.

The pressure was on.
Eyes locked in.
I stepped in.

An electric group dialogue formed.

Naming our individual challenges and opportunities.

We decided Black men in senior leadership were stronger together.

Decades of operating as lone wolves came to an end.

The BEM Forum was born.

A private room where Black men in senior leadership convene for enterprise, capital, and legacy conversations.

Where decisions are pressure-tested, blind spots identified, and collaboration is expected.

This year, we expand.

Convening in Dallas, Chicago, and New York to discuss AI, talent leadership, and board governance.

We accomplished what we came for.

The pressure lifted.

We left aligned.

And left the lone wolves behind.

There is something incredibly powerful about being in a room full of women who are not just leading, but intentionally opening doors, sharing wisdom, and making sure the next generation rises higher.

I left the 2026 Women’s Empowerment Leadership & Law Conference, hosted by the The Hispanic Bar Association of New Jersey (HBA-NJ), feeling inspired, energized, and deeply grateful to have been in the room.

From the honesty around compensation, leadership, coaching, and career growth to the powerful stories from trailblazing Lawtinas who have been the first in their fields, this event was a reminder that advancement does not happen by accident. It happens because women continue to speak up, pour into one another, and create spaces where truth, strategy, and encouragement can all exist together.

A huge thank you to Cristal Lambert, Nathania Reyes, Esq., Margo Chaly, the incredible committee members, and the The Hispanic Bar Association of New Jersey (HBA-NJ) for bringing together such a thoughtful, impactful experience.

So many powerful voices shared gems throughout the day, including Adrienne Valencia Garcia, Rosevelie Marquez Morales, Edda Santiago, Grissel S., Shell Bobev, Camelia M. Valdes, Congresswoman Nellie Pou, Honorable Kerry Soranno, Linda Estremera, Carmen Diaz, and Lori Lizarraga.

This was more than a conference. It was a reminder that women belong in every room where decisions are made, deals are shaped, policies are influenced, and leadership is defined.

Last night’s Executive Dinner hosted by Executive Women Of New Jersey featured an inspiring conversation with Acting Attorney General Jennifer Davenport, thoughtfully led by Camelia M. Valdes. The discussion on leadership, public service, and strengthening our communities was both powerful and energizing.

Always great catching up with dynamic members like Kim Keating and Joanne (Machida) Spears, CFP®, AIF®, CRPC™, CSRIC®, and connecting with so many impressive women across New Jersey. Many others who make this community so special weren’t in the photo, but the energy in the room said it all.

Grateful to be part of a community that continues to champion women’s leadership and impact.

Last month I had the honor of attending the 50th Anniversary Gala of NABA Northern NJ at Hudson House in Jersey City.

Fifty years.

Pause and really think about that.

For five decades, NABA Northern NJ has been creating opportunity, building leaders, and opening doors for Black professionals across accounting, finance, and business. Generations of talent have come through this community because people before them chose to lead, mentor, and lift others as they climbed.

One of the most powerful moments of the evening was honoring the past presidents of the chapter.

Watching those leaders stand together was deeply moving. Each of them carried the responsibility of pushing the profession forward so the next generation would have more access, more visibility, and more opportunity.

That is the legacy of #NABA.

Thank you to Derkyl Paton, President of NABA Northern NJ, for leading the chapter during such a historic milestone and continuing the work that has impacted so many lives.

It was also great reconnecting with incredible leaders including Orumé Hays, Trina L Glass, Ronald Taylor, Chris Toomer, and Mamata R. Bah. Being in that room reminded me how powerful this community truly is.
And sitting there celebrating fifty years of progress, one thought kept coming to mind.

The next chapter has to be even bigger.

For too long, too many professions have kept us in the single digits at the top. That is beginning to change. There is a new level of alignment happening across leaders who understand that the future of leadership must look different.

Congratulations to NABA Northern NJ on fifty years of leadership, community, and excellence.

What you have built matters more than ever.
