I've been watching incredible women change their gender to "male" on LinkedIn to get seen. 

I get it. The frustration is real.

BUT I keep coming back to...

EVERY action we take on this platform is training the AI controlling the algorithm right now.

The AI was trained on men's content and behaviors. We see the corporate bias of elevating men. That's obvious.

BUT we're training it now with EVERY post, every comment, every engagement.

Or lack of it.

If we want the algorithm to prioritize women's voices, WE HAVE TO USE OUR VOICES.

Stand out and speak... loud and proud... AS WOMEN. 

NOT men.

Not just post content and disappear.

Not just complain about the cards being stacked against us.

Not just hold back out of fear of being seen as "salesy."

We have to show up and talk about the topics we want to hear and share. 

Then tag each other in. 

Respond when we're tagged. 

Amplify the women we want to see more of. 

Enlist men to support the movement. 

Be assertive, not just nice. 

Build relationships, not walls.

Changing our gender to "male" isn't the move. 

The move is owning OUR power, OUR voice, and actually using it.

Together, we can train this algorithm.

Together, we can shift what gets prioritized.

But only if we show up... for ourselves and for each other.

Women are already changing the world.

Let's make sure LinkedIn and their AI know it too.

The more we do this... showing up as women, bringing more women to light... the more we train the AI controlling the algorithms.

I have a friend, Rebecca Worboys, who is the most helpful person I know, but there are still days I don't ask her for help.
 
The real reason I don’t ask? 

I'm afraid to ‘bother her.’

She’s already got so much on her plate with juggling her business, clients, kids, and life that me asking for help feels like I'm adding...

Another thing is her already overloaded schedule.

So, I don't ask, even though she's offered many times.

Another place I’ve noticed that SAME feeling of not wanting to bother someone pops up is...

When we don’t follow up with people we’ve met who we KNOW need our services (many have even told us they need help).

We’ve all been there when it comes to following up, right?

We’ve already sent a message and now we really want to reach out again because we know we can help, but…

Every time we think about hitting 'send' on another message to an old lead, our brain monkeys scream:
 
‘We don’t want to bother them. They’re busy people and if they had really wanted to work with me, they would have replied back when we sent them a message last time or reached out and let me know. Following up now will just get us blocked and we’ll completely lose the opportunity because we bothered them…again. Let’s post another piece of content and maybe they’ll see it and send us a message.’ 😱

But here’s the thing that so many of us are missing...

When we stopped communicating, we left them alone with their unsolved problem. 

The one we could have helped with. 

We aren’t helping our people because we are so focused on not bothering them. 

So what if 'not bothering them' is actually just abandoning them?

I was hosting a Q&A when someone asked, "How do I follow up without them thinking I'm going to pitch them?"

As I started to answer, someone commented: "Why would you chase them? If they want to work with you, they'll come to you."

While everyone nodded, snarky Heidi (internally ) said… 

'Why are you so special?' 🤫

While nerdy Heidi did the math:

If follow-up = chasing, and chasing = bad, then follow-up = bad.

But someone has to go first.

And people want meaningful connections but think anyone who reaches out is trying to sell them something.

Then the only "acceptable" strategy left is:

👉 Post content
👉 Hope they see it
👉 Hope they reach out first
👉 When they do… assume they're selling

Tell me that's not a clusterf&ck. 😬

Compare that to real life:

Offline: 

You meet someone at an event. 😎
They say, "Want to grab coffee?" 
You say, "YES." 
And think: "Cool, they want to connect."

Online: 

Someone messages after meeting in a virtual networking breakout room.

Your brain screams 😱: 
"They're trying to sell me something." 
"This is a waste of my time." 
"They used an em dash...they must be a bot."
Then we ignore them. 
And weeks later think… 

"They didn't reach out again, so they must not have been serious."

And that feels like complete BS to me because this is actually costing us so freaking much because...

We've handed our business AGENCY over to a platform algorithm. 😱

And now we're waiting for LinkedIn to show our content, for people to engage, for them to initiate, just so we don't risk being misunderstood or lumped in with spammers.

We've made ourselves passengers in our own business development.

Now we're stuck in a standoff. Everyone's giving everyone else the side eye, questioning intentions.

All while waiting for someone else to go first...

And wondering why our online activities aren't converting into referrals and clients.

We’ve been trained to believe about follow-up.

LinkedIn/social media taught us to treat normal relationship-building behaviors as...suspicious.

Which is crazy because offline, we already know how to do this. 

But online? 

We freeze. 

Not because we don't know how…but because we're terrified of being seen as "salesy."

So, we keep posting content and collecting followers. 

But people don't refer followers. They refer relationships.

So tell me, what would make it feel safe for you to follow up on a conversation online the same way you would offline?

"I don't want every comment to become a mini-pitch. That feels out of alignment with my natural style."

A speaker coach told me this last week.

This woman is incredible at what she does... helping leaders drop the performance mask and speak in a way that actually moves people.

She has a whole system for it.

But when we talked about systematizing her conversations so that she achieves her desired goal... learn how to convert conversations into clients naturally?

"No thank you, that doesn't feel authentic.'

I'm not really surprised at all that someone who teaches structure is resisting structure to achieve her very goals in her own business. 

Because we've been taught that systematizing our conversations = salesy.

So instead, we toss comments around here and there, just enough to check the "I engaged today" box.

But what I actually see?

So many people talking about not getting results from LinkedIn. Thinking of leaving the platform. Barely focusing on conversations... just keeping the content flowing.

I see so many missed opportunities.

Because very comment, every DM, every conversation is a relationship-building moment for your business.

And without a structure that supports you, most of those moments evaporate.

I mean think about about often you have...

Warm conversations that never go anywhere.

Friendly relationships that never deepen.

Visibility that doesn't position you.

Momentum that never compounds.

We're not avoiding systems because they don't work.

We're avoiding them because we think structure = bad.

But here's the truth I keep coming back to:

A good system doesn't script you. It amplifies you.

Think about jazz musicians. They learn the scales so they can riff and create magical music that sinks into your soul... every time you hear the song.

It's the same with intentional business conversations that get consistent results.

The right system gives you the who, what, when, where, and how…

So your voice lands clearly and consistently. 

Naturally leading to referrals, collaborations, and clients.

Good systems exist to support you, not suffocate you.

So the question isn't "Will systemizing hurt my chances?"

It's: Do you have an engagement playbook that consistently grows your business... or are you just focused on content?

That one question will tell you whether the structure you're using is actually serving your business, or silently limiting it.

This totally feels like grounds for divorce. 😂

I feel the same way when I'm having an awesome conversation with someone in a networking breakout room...

And they say... 'I'm going to a networking event in... real life... tomorrow.' 😱

Wait. 

What?

So... what is this networking event?

A figment of my imagination?

Definitely NOT impressed.

Again, feels like a reason to never speak to them again. 😂

I also feel this way when I ask someone a question in the comments that they don't respond to. 😬
