The meeting is almost over, and you have had the answer the entire time. But you didn't say it. And now someone else just did. 

This happens more than you think. I have worked with senior professionals who go months without speaking up in meetings, even when they know exactly what needs to be said. 

The problem is never that they don't have the answer. It's more than that. They have spent so long second-guessing themselves that silence feels safer than risking being wrong. 

One of my clients hadn't contributed to a strategy meeting in over a year. 

When we started working together, she told me she was waiting until she felt more confident. Six weeks later, she was presenting a quarterly strategy to the board.  

Of course, she didn't suddenly become a different person. She simply stopped waiting for confidence to show up before taking action. Turns out, it works the other way round.

Last year, I worked with someone who went three years without getting promoted because she could not speak up in meetings. After we worked together, she was not just promoted. She quit and started her own business. We will talk about that story in the session.

🤔 What is the one confidence challenge you would want me to address in the session?

Three years.

That is how long Emma (name changed due to privacy protection) was passed over for promotion at the same company.

She worked harder than anyone on her team. Put in the hours. Delivered results. But when it came time for promotions, someone else always got it.

When she came to me, she told me she thought she just needed to be better at her job.

I told her the problem was not her work. It was that she could not say NO.

She was buried in everyone else's priorities. Every time someone asked her to take something on, she said yes. Even when she was already overloaded. Even when it meant her own goals got pushed aside.

She thought saying no would make her look difficult. So she kept saying yes, kept working harder, and kept getting overlooked.

We worked on something simple: boundaries.

Not in a theoretical way. In a practical way. How to actually say no without burning bridges. How to protect her time without feeling guilty about it.

Within two months, something shifted. She started saying no to projects that were not hers. She stopped staying late to fix other people's problems. She focused on what actually mattered.

And then she got promoted.

But here is the part that surprised me. Three months after that, she quit.

She started her own consultancy. Last time we spoke, she told me she is making more in six months than she made in two years at that company.

In my post last week I asked what you rehearsed saying, but didn't. 

The responses were interesting. 

Most people think the problem is public speaking. Or assertiveness. Or just needing to be more confident. 

After working with over 500 professionals, I can tell you it's rarely that simple. 

Someone comes to me saying they need help with presentations. We dig into it and find out the real issue is that they don't trust their own judgment. 

Another person says they struggle with meetings, but what's actually happening is they can't handle the thought of being wrong in front of others. 

There's research showing that public speaking ranks above death as people's biggest fear. Stage fright that stems from social anxiety is real, and it affects brilliant professionals who have every reason to speak up but can't. 

You can spend years working on presentation techniques when the actual problem is something else entirely. 

That's why I built a quiz that cuts through the surface stuff and identifies what's actually holding you back. 

It takes about five minutes and gives you a proper answer without the generic advice. The quiz looks at four areas: self-perception, communication, mindset, and action. 

You will get a report that tells you which one is your primary block, and on Thursday, I'm going to share something for people who take it.

James was a high-flyer in a large organisation where his role carried significant responsibility for people's safety.

Then his life started unravelling. Marriage breakdown. Other personal issues were piling up. The anxiety became overwhelming.

The organisation suspended him from work. They needed to be sure he could handle the responsibility before bringing him back. They offered him in-house counselling and support. He went through it all.

But it was not working.

Six months passed. He had ticked all the boxes on paper. Attended every session. Done everything they asked. But he still could not get past the reassessment.

Every time he prepared for it, the same thought ran through his head: they saw me fall apart, they will never trust me with that level of responsibility again.

When we started working together, I asked him what was really keeping him stuck.

"I know I am capable. But how do I walk back into that building after everything that happened? How do I convince them I can be trusted again when I am not even sure I trust myself?"

That was the real problem. The in-house counselling had helped him manage the practical side of his life. But it had not touched the story he was telling himself about who he was now.

We spent the next four weeks getting to the root of it. Not what happened to him. But what he believed it meant about him.

He went from "I fell apart, and they will never trust me again" to "I went through something difficult, got the help I needed, and I am ready to step back into that responsibility."

He went back for the reassessment. This time, he passed.

He got his job back. And he is performing at a level he had not reached before. He told me recently he feels more grounded now than he did before any of this happened.

The work was not about pretending the breakdown did not happen. It was about changing what it meant about his ability to move forward.

🔄 What story are you telling yourself that is keeping you stuck?

Yesterday, I launched the quiz to help you identify which confidence block is holding you back. 

A lot of you have already taken it, and the responses are telling. The most common thing people say is: "I just need to be more confident." But that is like saying you need to be taller. It does not tell you what to actually do. 

Confidence isn't a switch you flip. It is the result of changing how you think about yourself just before you speak. Most people assume it works like this: feel confident first, then take action. It doesn't. 

It works like this: Thoughts → Feelings → Actions. 
Change the thought, and the feeling shifts. 

The feeling shifts, and the action follows. 

Example. Someone freezes in meetings. The thought running in their head is: "What if I'm wrong and everyone realises I don't belong here?" 
We change that to: "What if my perspective helps someone see this problem differently?" 

Same person. Same meeting. Different thought. Completely different outcome. 

The people who break through don't wait to feel ready. They change their thoughts, take action, and let their confidence catch up afterwards. 

Next week, I will share a story that shows exactly how this played out for someone who had not spoken in a strategy meeting for over a year. 

What thought keeps you quiet?

Before any important meeting, Emma would spend two minutes standing tall.

Shoulders back. Head up. Feet planted. And breathing. Four seconds in. Six seconds out.

Most people think confidence works from the inside out. You feel confident, then your body follows.

It works the other way round. Your body tells your brain how to feel.

When you slouch, cross your arms, and look down, your nervous system reads that as a threat. You need to stay small and safe.

When you stand tall, open your chest, breathe slowly, your nervous system reads that as calm. You can handle this.

Emma used this technique before every big moment. It stopped her body from sending panic signals to her brain.

Two minutes. That is all it takes.

Before your next meeting or presentation, try this:

Stand up. Shoulders back. Breathe slowly for two minutes. Four seconds in, six seconds out.

Your body will calm down. Your mind will follow.

We practice this live in the masterclass, along with six other techniques that rewire how your nervous system responds under pressure. 

🧘 What is your pre-meeting ritual, or do you have one?

Sarah spent four months building a financial model that saved her company £2.3 million.

Her boss had no idea until someone else mentioned it in a meeting.

He was not ignoring her. Sarah just never told him.

She assumed he saw her work. She assumed he knew what she was doing. He did not.

When promotion time came, her boss promoted someone else. Someone who had been there half as long and delivered half as much.

Sarah was furious. She told me: "I work harder than anyone on that team. How did they not see that?"

I asked her if she had told her boss about the financial model.

"No. He should know. I sent the final report."

"Did you tell him you built it from scratch? That it took four months? That it is saving millions?"

"No. That feels like bragging."

This is what I call the Quiet Excellence Trap.

You think good work speaks for itself. It does not. It gets buried in fifty other emails your boss has not read.

The person who got promoted was not working harder than Sarah. They were just more visible.

Every Friday, they sent a three-line update. What they delivered that week. What they were working on next. Any roadblocks they need help with?

Three lines. Their boss always knew what they were doing. Sarah's boss had no idea what she was working on.

When we started working together, I told Sarah her boss was not omniscient. If she did not tell him what she was doing, he would assume she was not doing much.

She hated hearing that. But she started sending weekly updates anyway.

Three bullet points. What she delivered. What was next. Any roadblocks.

Her boss responded to the first one: "I had no idea you were working on this. Can we discuss?"

They met. He asked about her career goals. Three months later, she was presenting a quarterly strategy to the board.

Six months after that, she was promoted.

Visibility is not vanity. It is survival.

Your mouth says: "Sure, no problem."

Then you resent them. And then you resent yourself.

I work with professionals who have built entire careers like this. Always saying yes. Always taking on more. Always putting their own goals last.

And they are exhausted.

The problem is not that people are asking too much of you. The problem is that you keep saying yes when you mean no.

You think saying no will make you look difficult. So you say yes, do work you resent, and wonder why you never get ahead.

Meanwhile, the people who do get ahead are saying no all the time. They protect their time. They are clear about their priorities. They have boundaries.

And people respect them for it.

Leaders do not say no because they are difficult. They say no because they are clear.
