My father was one of the top insurance salesmen on the West Coast back in the 1970's and 80's. If you're old enough to remember that era, you know how hard it was to earn that level of recognition - and keep it.

I, on the other hand, am comedically terrible at sales...proof that not all talents are passed down by our parents. But ask me to solve a problem, handle a difficult client, or bridge the divide between fractured teams, then I'm your girl.

People are my niche. Building relationships has never felt like a means to an end - it's always been the end goal itself. 

When the pandemic hit, I had to evolve fast. Replacing the face-to-face chitchat and hours of driving from one dealership to the next with real-time solutions became the new normal. Surprisingly, it didn't just maintain business - it grew it. Clients gained more value, my employer gained more trust, and I built even stronger relationships with teammates and leaders along the way.

Because when you discover your purpose, something clicks. You stop feeling like every day is a grind or a necessary sacrifice for a "comfortable" life. You start seeing the ripple effect of what you do and how it changes others' experiences for the better.

That's how my dad felt too. And I think that's why he was so successful.

The truth is, you don't have to master every skill to make an impact. Right now, we're living in a world where so many people are exhausted, burnt out, short-tempered, and highly defensive. That's not exactly a recipe for growth.

You know what is though? Human connection, and here's a couple reminders of the tried-and-true ways you can achieve that:

➡️ Offer to help a colleague who's struggling with something you've already mastered. You build mentorship skills, they improve their productivity...and the company reaps the rewards of improved service.
➡️ If you're in management or leadership, genuinely check in with your teams - even if it means jumping down the ladder a few steps, I guarantee it will be appreciated.

Because the path out of our current reality won't be carved by policy changes or endless planning sessions. It'll be built by lowering our defenses and building our relationships - one small act of support at a time.

Call what's happening right now the calm before the storm, or the pause before the breakthrough - but either way, whether we say it out loud or not...big changes are right in front of us. 

So, if you're sensing that quiet pressure as well, just know this:

Throughout a seemingly endless job search, I had full access to watch an uncomfortable shift... a quiet, steady coldness behind performative formalities. 

People feel more distant now
Conversations feel shorter
The collective energy feels lower
Even the usually vibrant people seem a bit frosty these days. 

But after these past several years, can we really blame anyone? Everyone is tired of carrying things they aren't comfortable talking about, all while trying to predict a future that seems more unstable by the day. 

When the emotional temperature drops, it affects what's most important - trust, collaboration, opportunity...everything that's required to produce the outcomes needed to be successful. 

The fix isn't pretending that things are fine - it's connecting with eachother by choice, not obligation. 

Not forced positivity 
Not corporate cheerleading
Just real presence, real honesty, and real conversations rooted in the desire to understand. 

We can't be afraid of the tough talks, and we can't shy away from the uncomfortable moments. I can tell you from years of experience that my strongest client relationships were built in hard truths - not hollow pleasantries. 

So if the world wants to continue freezing over, that's its choice. I'll be here staying warm, staying human, and staying willing to talk about the things most people prefer to tiptoe around. 

Remember this:

The ultimate currency in this world will always be human connection - so do what you can to not let it devalue.
