My parents had a friend called Ron.

He was like my rich uncle.

Uncle Ron had money. A lot of it.

He used to invite us over to his mansion in the beach.

From memory, and I'm forgetting most things, it had:

- A football court
- Basketball court
- Beach volleyball court
- (I think) 20 bedrooms
- A gym
- Heliport
- Ping pong table
- Pool table
- Multiple lounges looking at the ocean
- A pool
- Another pool
- A fridge that his employees kept fully stocked with cold coconuts.
- PEELED cold coconuts. With a machete.

This was so impressive to 12 year old me that I tried to recreate the house on Minecraft.

(It's still impressive tbh).

One day he took us marlin fishing.

Rented a boat with my dad and some friends and took us to the sea.

Usually one fishes 2-3 marlins on a good day.

That day we caught 16.

That day I learned that marlins are extremely strong. If it weren't for my 200lb dad muscling it out then I would 100% get yanked off the boat.

That day I learned that a marlin's skin is only smooth when felt in one direction. If you move it in the opposite direction you are for sure getting cut. It's like sandpaper but with knives.

He would let me, the 12 year old, ride the 4x4 motorbike to the beach. It was quite hilly so if you went real fast you could even catch some airtime.

He would hire a massage lady for the full day so anyone could get one if they wanted to.

Uncle Ron was blessed.

But he also knew how to be blessed.

He knew how to spend the money. How to use money to get nice things, experiences and bless others. He was just as good at enjoying it as he was at making it.

Uncle Ron taught me that being blessed is not just a state.

It's the start of a new skill.

Being blessed isn't the end.

One must also learn how to be blessed.

I might text Uncle Ron one of these days and show him the villa. Tell him about the wedding and the Euro trips I took with my brother, my parents and Abuelita.

I want him to know that marlin fishing was not the only thing he taught me.

I started January 5th with a work sprint. One rock. One focus.

Here’s what separates people who adapt and those who don’t:

Most people blame external pressure.

Very convenient. 

Because then you don’t have to examine your own decisions.

But tough times don’t define you. You define how you respond to them.

For me, 2025 was one of the best years on record. Most of that traces back to one decision: focus on recurring revenue.

Before that, my business was fragile. Revenue came in bursts. Planning felt theoretical. Every month was a reset.

That realization didn’t come from scrolling. It came from forcing the numbers to tell the truth.

Here’s what most people get wrong about planning:

They plan to feel organized, not to make tradeoffs.

Unrealistic plans create false confidence. Ignoring your capacity creates burnout. Never adjusting creates quiet failure.

The solution? Quarterly planning.

Long enough to set direction. Short enough to correct mistakes before they compound.

A real rock solves an active problem, changes future options, and creates second-order effects. If it doesn’t do all three, it’s not a rock.

Most ideas get eliminated at this stage. Nice-to-haves don’t change the game.

The cost of continuing as usual:

Busy weeks. Incremental progress. Another year where effort increases faster than leverage.

Poor planning doesn’t fail loudly. It fails quietly.

Planning isn’t about controlling the future. It’s about creating structure that allows good decisions to emerge.

The people who do well aren’t waiting for clarity. They create it.
