Daisy Morris is a social media strategist and the Founder of social media consultancy and digital community, The Selfhood. 

Studying Fashion at University, Daisy specialised in digital media and online consumer psychology, laying the vital foundations upon which her ongoing growth in the online world would be built. After graduating she worked in creative agencies, within teams at in-house fashion brands, and on specific activations and events for global brands, such as Pernod Ricard, Nasty Gal, and Skinnydip London.

In 2019, Daisy quit her job after finding frustration in the lack of down-to-earth, real, and human advice available for those trying to find their way in the world of digital marketing and social media.  With a fire in her belly and an undeniable enthusiasm to support creatives in finding their voice on social media, she went on to found The Selfhood. The company was born to teach business owners and creatives how to share their talents and promote their work online, in the most actionable and authentic way. 

The main premise of The Selfhood is that it aims to make URL interactions feel just as human as IRL ones. 

Using funny tongue in cheek videos, memes, and vibrantly designed interactive content, Daisy shares the know-how on building meaningful communities and connections on social media with business owners, creators, students, and creatives, far and wide. 

Clients and collaborators of The Selfhood range from tech companies, such as Meta, Microsoft and Adobe, to mental health charities, such as Mind, and the business has supported over 150 independent businesses in the last year alone. Dedicated to helping young and aspiring creatives find their feet in the industry, Daisy supports students as a guest lecturer at universities such as the University of The Arts London and the Fashion Retail Academy, whilst also continuing to connect with her online community, sharing honest, friendly, and unfiltered advice across The Selfhood’s social media channels.

Wore trackies to LinkedIn HQ yesterday! It’s always good to hear what’s actually going down on here, from the horses mouth. 

I was extremely honoured to be invited to a roundtable with some seriously inspiring community builders, business owners and creators yesterday.

We sat with LinkedIn to learn about how ai is ✨actually✨  impacting the job market, the good, the bad, the straight up fugly, and discussed everything from confidence to CV’s.

There were recruiters in the room, journalists, community builders, agency owners and the LinkedIn team. Hosted by the incredible Stefanie Sword-Williams FRSA (she/her) and Charlotte Davies

My key takeaways were:

💭 Recruiters are actually looking for typos now (as proof of human) the overly polished CV that looks and sounds like everyone else’s isn’t cutting it, ditch chat gpt and write from the heart. Sean Kennedy

💭 If you don’t have the experience you want: go and create it. Make a passion project to build your case studies Stefanie Sword-Williams FRSA (she/her) 

💭 Ai should not be the idea generator, it should be the executor. Proof of this is now we’re seeing that probation periods are being EXTENDED from 3 months to 6 months because ai is inflating people’s skills in the interview stage Jane Hamilton

I was asked how we continue to innovate creatively when ai is everywhere. 

Here’s my answer:

Ai is trained on your IP, your clients IP, creative IP.  It’s a regurgitation of what is already on the internet. It can be amazing for helping to organise your thoughts, but shouldn't dictate them.

The best ideas happen in collaborative spaces. By listening. Where conversation is encouraged and questions are asked, where people are challenged, where we guide discussions to find answers, not make assumptions.

We encourage innovation through connection and collaboration: in education, in the workplace, in every day life, we need to find ways to connect and to talk outside of technology.

To get out of our echo chambers and speak to people who don’t think, look, live the way we do.

Start a debate club at work, bring in specialists from other teams, get feedback. ChatGPT will always agree with you, it’s a one way dialogue with a robot, the best ideas come from real human experiences with real people, who have shared the experience too.

I often find that people who create ideas and community from a place of empathy and lived experience, go on to birth communities and projects that really impact others. I really got to see this play out on Saturday.

🗣️ I hosted a workshop for Co Labs Music Support - a professional development community dedicated to empowering disabled young creatives (ages 16-30) who have undergone treatment for cancer. 

💓 We spoke about how they can bring their creative talents to life online, supporting others who are undergoing chemotherapy, recovering, or building after, and sharing more of their why and their personal story.

The participants were amazing, and the main theme that came up from everyone was: belonging. Feeling connected to a person, a story, an idea, or an output to help other people in their shoes to know what's possible.

I'm always blown away by the ideas and brains when I do Youth Work, there is so much talent out there ❤️

A beautiful morning that really inspired me.
