Security isn't a technology problem. Think about it.

HR uses technology, is it a technology field?
Marketing uses technology, is it a technology field?
Finance? Sales? 

They all use technology, in the same way we all use technology in almost every part of daily life. That doesn't make it *about* technology. It's about solving real-world problems, and leveraging tools to do so. But leveraging those tools correctly requires understanding the actual problem.

This was a brief comment I made 2 weeks ago at Infinigate UK & Ireland's CyberVerse event (a GREAT event I am still chuffed about and want to talk about more in the coming weeks), but Lee Alesbrook took it upon himself to write a whole article about it, expanding on it, and giving some brilliant anecdotes to drive it home too.

He clearly thought it was important, and I hope you'll agree he's right.

Are We Getting Security Wrong? … And What Can AI Teach Us About Fixing It?

Why is the biggest challenge to overall security (IMHO) almost completely ignored?

Structure. 

It's a passing comment even in my own talks, but something I focused a lot in the "CISO days", and establishing it was often met with confusion and resistance by security and the business alike. As if changing the structure of the organisation had nothing to do with my job or security in general.

But hopefully by now we realise that the biggest factor in the security of an organisations isn't having tons of "cyber", but rather having great IT (and business) processes, so you have good infrastructure,  good applications, and good processes that present fewer risks in the first place. And good capabilities so you can keep things consistent and managed with ease.

We endlessly see end of life kit, poor asset visibility and control, difficulty in deploying, problematic code, identity issues, bad configs, abysmal patching, teams not working together in an optimal way, and much much more. The causes that led to this must be addressed.

You can set up as many remediation projects as you like, something led the organisation to be in the state that it's in, and it will lead it right back there if you don't address it.

Without having a "structure", which comprises a way of defining what good looks like for everyone in a transparent and accountable way, a framework to put it in, how the whole org is shaped, and the right incentives (and culture) it is impossible to make lasting progress. Entropy and the same internal headwinds will kill you again.

The irony is that if you establish this structure rather than focus on remediating symptoms, things will start to improve over time all by themselves. 

You can push back a ship all you want, in the end it prefers to go in the way it's pointed.
