The AI bubble isn't what you think it is.

I went down a bit of rabbit hole over the weekend 

I looked at some of the data and it's a bit embarrassing for our industry.

Tech workers are a tiny, tiny, tiny portion of the US workforce. So tiny in fact that tech workers only make up roughly 3.6%.

But they make up 15% of all LinkedIn users.
They drive 33% of all VC funding.
And 60% of the tech workforce use AI regularly.

So when you see "AI is taking over" on your feed every single day, the reality is that's not the economy talking, that's a tiny echo chamber that we live in.

The real numbers:

72% of workers have never used AI at work.
88% don't use it daily.
91% of small businesses haven't adopted it.

Construction workers aren't worried about ChatGPT, plumbers aren't losing sleep over Claude. The bloke running a logistics company with 30 staff has never opened an AI tool.

The bubble isn't AI. The bubble is us.  

Tech people, who work in tech, who speak about tech, who love tech.

Living in a world where everyone we follow, everyone we talk to, and everything we read is from the same 3.6%, which is roughly 12.6 million people.

The entire tech workforce would fit inside LA.

Anyway thats my take on the whole AI bubble.

So when reality shows up, the hallucinations, the broken workflows, the third iteration that still doesn't work, they feel scammed. 

I've been feeling pretty lost lately.

I just can't compete with the promise of magic. And I can't bring myself to ask you to comment on a post when I could just link you to my GitHub or YouTube. 

My version of this looks like sitting with a client and mapping out a messy process. Building something that fits how their team actually works and fixing the thing that broke at 9pm on a Tuesday.

I don't have a hot take to close with.

I just think there's still space for people doing the quiet stuff properly and I really only want to be surrounded by people with the same values.

Happy International Women's Day! 
I think women always struggle with highlighting our talents and achievements, along with the talents and achievements of other women around us. We spend a whole lot of time in March (and today) highlighting the big shoulders we all stood on - the Florence Nightingales, Grace Hoppers, Rosa Parks, Harriet Tubman, Taylor Swift, Sally Ride, etc- but we tend to miss the quieter ones in our own individual lives. Even though they are truly the ones who have helped us become who we are and who we're becoming. 
I think sometimes, at least I know its true for me and I've seen it manifest in my career and hobbies, there's an inferiority that if another woman is excelling somewhere, that means we aren't, and leads to spitefulness, division and distrust. I've been seriously re-evaluating this in my own life over the last year or so, choosing a perspective of "abundance" instead of "scarcity."  I should be cheering other women on and championing their success.  I remember how I've felt when others have not, how it fosters my own insecurity, and I want to avoid doing that to others. Its taking new intentionality, but its important. 
Back to those quiet inspirations and shoulders.  I think family is always obvious, but even as I've gone through my life there were moments and people who may not have realized it, but certainly influenced me and helped me to become who I am, and who continue to help me be who I'm becoming.

Happy #humanfriday y'all.  It'll be light this week as I've been battling a heck of an upper respiratory thing.  I sound like Roz, the secretary from Monsters, inc.  
However- because of having to lay down and let myself heal for a bit, I remembered something I loved, that actually seemed to have restorative effects- the Price is Right.  PlutoTV has a whole 24 hour station dedicated to the old Bob Barker episodes, and as a kid I remembered watching them with my grandmother, and then with my mom when I was home sick from school. (BTW, Plinko, or the Mountain Climber game are the two best on the show.)  On it went, for me to feel a little comfort in that, some soup, and juice as I curled up and napped on the couch.  And honestly, the next day, I felt a ton better.  I think there's definitely healing power in watching the old Price is Right.  Maybe once I'm better, I'll try getting my "Punky Power" back with some rewatches of Punky Brewster.

Last night while teaching class, someone mentioned CYA, and a few of my students didn't know what that meant. I was surprised, figuring this was just part of common lexicon at this point, but then I remembered this XKCD comic about how many things we think are common but there are on average, 10,000 people who may not have ever heard about it before and learn about it each day. How many opportunities have I missed being able to share something wonderful with someone because I was incredulous to them not knowing about it? I remember a colleague at a previous role had not known about RickRolls (which I love, btw) and getting to share that with her. I had missed out on so much joy in sharing and getting to see them discover it. 

I love sharing with people, and I shocked myself when thinking about this- and now I have a new habit in my processes to think about- using an opportunity like this to share and see that person learn and grow, and sharing something that brings me happiness too.

And in case you're one of the 10,000 today- CYA means Cover your A$$. :)

Happy #humanfriday everyone!! Its been a crazy week- I got stuck in Kansas City for an extra night this week, so I'm playing serious catchup with work and life.  But of course I can't forget to be human for a minute. 
I'm going to preface this post just in case with  this is not a religon post.  Because Lent is a religious observance to some. This isn't about Lent.  At least not for me. 
Every year, the Unitarian Universalists put out this idea of UULent- a word a day you think upon, then post a photo based off what the word represents to you.  I've been doing this practice ...or at least trying to, for about 12 years now. Forty days of mindfulness, and consideration of key phrases and how I interpret them and how they work in my world. Its a really interesting activity, and one that not only shows me where I've been, it shows me where I am too.  Some years words overlap, so I can go back and see what it meant to be before.  Much like "A man cannot stand in the same river twice, because the river has changed and so has the man," What the word means at one moment in my life may not be the same. 

For example, yesterday was Loss. If that had been on a previous year's list, I might have had a more dour outlook to it.  This year- it was actually a more freeing term to me. While loss can be sad, and can have a negative outlook, there's also so much positivity that can come from loss (like weightloss, or losing your favorite socks and finding new favorite socks because of it.)  So it definitely allows me to take a deeper look at my perspectives on things, and what these words can mean in my world. Ash too has duality. 
Today is heart.  I'm still working through what that means to me.  I keep thinking of Loki in the Avengers saying to Hawkeye "You have heart." And wondering what he meant by that before he subjugagted him with the scepter.
