He slapped me so hard that I went numb because I fell asleep while his whole family and extended family were watching our wedding movie


We had just arrived in India after a 16-hour flight
Then an 8-hour drive to his village
I didn’t sleep on the flight
I didn’t sleep during the day
I had been awake for more than 24 hours


That night, everyone gathered to watch our wedding movie


I tried to stay awake
I tried to keep my eyes open
But my body was shutting down
I fell asleep right there in the middle of the room


He wasn’t home at that moment
When he walked in and saw me sleeping while everyone else was awake, he got angry


He woke me up
Took me into the other house
And slapped me across the face so hard that I went numb


“If this was your family, you wouldn’t be sleeping”

Inside, I thought
If it was my family, I would be sleeping
Because they would understand exhaustion
They wouldn’t punish me for being tired


We were only three months into the marriage
And this wasn’t the first time


Eight and a half months later, I ran
Literally ran out of the house
My sister picked me up around the corner
And I never went back

November 16, 2008 I thought I was getting married to my prince charming. I didn't know that my life was about to take an ugly turn. 


I was so happy on my wedding day. Beginning a new chapter. 


Little did I know that my life is about to become a living nightmare. 
 

Little did I know that I was marrying a man that is going to mentally abusive me every single day. 


Little did I know that the man I am about to marry is going to slap me few times. 


Little did I know that the man I am about to marry, had anger issues. 


Little did I know that 9 months into my marriage I am going to be running for my life, just to save myself!


This innocent woman in this picture had no idea the abusive she is about to go through after Nov 16, 2008 inflicted by her husband. 


November is Woman Abuse Prevention Month


August 2009, I had the courage to run for my life and get myself out of an abusive marriage. 


But many women are not so lucky. They stay in abusive marriages, relationships that one day end up taking their life. 


I hope by me sharing my story today helps even one woman leave an abusive relationship. It would be all worth it!
