⛔️ "LinkedIn security" is NOT a real account. A lot of people have been asking about comments appearing to come from an official LinkedIn account – except that the account usually has no profile pic and no followers.

It's fake and clearly set up so that it can comment on posts with the express aim of worrying members enough to get them to click on dodgy links. Don't fall into that trap.

LinkedIn should update the company page setup screens to make "LinkedIn" a reserved word that people can't use in a page name.

Also useful would be to prevent accounts with 0 followers from being able to post links, to stop the endless cycle of fake accounts being set up for spam purposes each day.

🕥  Some people have asked why I put a date and time at the bottom of my posts. 

1. It's a protest against LinkedIn
The date and time is encoded into the long ID that's baked into the web address of each post. So, LinkedIn definitely have the data but choose not to display it. I think this is wrong. I'm not one to praise Twitter but they've been showing dates and times on tweets for almost TWO DECADES. It's mad that we don't see this basic info on LinkedIn. Instead, we see fuzzy relative times (6h, 2d, etc.).

2. It might help readers
If someone wants to quote something I've written, they know exactly when it was published. It's possibly hubris to think anyone would do that, but I'm just trying to be helpful in the event that I say something worthy of amplification.

PS. Annoyingly, TikTok also doesn't display a date and time on posts, but again that info is recorded and discoverable.

"Link engagement": this is even more of a reason NOT to put links in comments, as your individual post analytics now reveal how many clicks your links in posts have received.

I'd still avoid links in posts whenever possible, but if you have to include them, at least you can now see how effective they are.

The HEADLINE is increasingly important because comments are being seen more than ever, and that's where a short, eye-catching line of text can encourage clicks through to your profile, which is where connections are made.

Focus on the first handful of words (~40 characters) of your headline and make a bold statement that will spark intrigue and capture brain space.

Instead of being a comedian – "oxygen consumer", "former baby" – be clear and deliver some relevant truth in the smallest space possible. Set an expectation that you're confident you can fulfil. I often refer to the headline as "the biggest promise you can keep."

My "relentlessly helpful" phrase has done a lot of heavy lifting for me since I came up with it in 2017, and it's why I wrote the book Content DNA. 

If you haven't touched your headline for ages, it's time to refresh it for 2026. If you need help, let's talk about it.

As you can see, I don't use the traditional CV-style writing that's typical for the Experience section. As a self-employed business owner, I'm not looking for a job, and so I can use this space to give an indication of the value of the community. 

What will the new AI-powered algorithms make of this? No idea yet. But it's all true and if it moves anyone to find out more about the community, it's done its job.

I've been a Vimeo power user for more than a decade. Now, the platform is likely to go the way of Evernote, StreamYard and WeTransfer, all of which have previously been acquired by BS (a fitting initialism 💩). 

Eventbrite is also moving to BS in 2026, and now the shambles is beginning at Vimeo with layoffs. I'm expecting feature cuts and a tripling of the price soon, which means that I'll have to look seriously at moving my Espresso+ video estate elsewhere.

Not happy at all 😡

💾  I've finally got a LinkedIn feature that many people in my Espresso+ community had a couple of months ago: the ability to see how many saves and sends an individual post has had on LinkedIn.

These are useful metrics for understanding how valuable your audience finds your content. They'd be even more powerful if the numbers were shown publicly alongside the stats for reactions and comments. The only possible downside I could think of there (apart from slightly more noise on the screen) is that these stats could give engagement pod users a bad new incentive to maximise the numbers ("make sure you like/comment AND save/send all of my craptacular content").

I'd like to see a combined set of saved and sent posts in the main analytics dashboard, instead of having to click into each post's analytics. That would be an easier way of tracking the perceived usefulness of your content over time.

Microsoft's latest earnings results (FY26 Q2) relating to LinkedIn:

• Double-digit member growth in LinkedIn, with 30% growth in paid video ads. 
• Strong adoption of LinkedIn Hiring Assistant, with weekly users growing 17% w/w on average.
• LinkedIn Marketing Solutions revenue grew 15% year over year.
• LinkedIn revenue increased 11% and 10% in constant currency driven by Marketing Solutions.
• Microsoft expect LinkedIn revenue growth in the low-double digits.

No news yet on LinkedIn member numbers, though the Q1 results put membership at 1.3 billion. I'll update when I have more.

While I’m high in courage (Gallup strength 'Activator'), I’ve a lifetime habit of second-guessing myself. It's something I’m always working on and I tell myself that my occasional lack of initiative is learned: my mother always framed timidity as humility, and praised the social grace of being the spotlight, not the beacon.

Last year I wasn’t consistently active on LinkedIn. 

A big, horrible family thing happened and I had to step up and in comparison, LinkedIn felt trite.

I also second-guessed myself professionally. For the first time in almost 17 years of running my own LinkedIn profile writing business and 11 years of creating content (something ordinary folk couldn’t do on LinkedIn until 2014), I wrote posts… then froze at the publish button.

I failed to nurture relationships.

But as I’ve reflected on the mess that was 2025, I’ve realised the thing that got me through the hard stuff was relationships: my beloved uncle Pete who cheered me along, those who kept checking in despite my slow replies, and my business coach Janine Garner and her incredible community, many of whom reminded me near daily of the value I bring.

LinkedIn isn’t trite. Yes, it can hijack your attention. It’s designed to be addictive. 

But with intention and the right habits, it’s the best platform for building real relationships with exceptional, inspiring people, and for turning strangers into clients (or business besties) through commenting, content, and very gentle DMs.

No other platform lets you see someone’s full work story in one place - their experience, education, and what they can teach you. In a fast-moving world where change is the only constant, I’m leaning back into LinkedIn. 

Because learning is the edge. 

Shared insight is how we keep pace with a world that won’t sit still.

I’ve always had this belief that everybody has a story to tell and a talent to share… And I seem to be alone in this. 

Most people treat 'putting yourself out there' the way you’d treat 'walking barefoot across hot Lego while a panel of strangers gives you feedback in real time.' Excruciating. Judgy. No thank you. Hard pass.

Lisa Yen was definitely in that camp.

She was referred to me years ago by a former client, knew she needed to improve her LinkedIn profile… but proceeded to take the scenic route to contacting me. Not 'I’ll book in next week' scenic, more like 'I’ll circle for several seasons like a cautious hawk and maybe… maybe… land… later.'

So here’s the thing about Lisa Yen: she loves being in service. Making everything all about others. She runs a strategic advisory and accounting business that serves others, and she’s Chair of Basketball NSW - an organisation that serves clubs, members, and the sport itself, an organisation that cares deeply about others experiences.

And I should know, because I’m a huge basketball fan with season tickets to the Sydney Kings.

So today there was a double header: the Flames, then the Kings. That’s a lot of basketball. 

On a whim, I text Lisa: “Are you at the game? I’d love to say hello.”

We exchange a few messages before determining where we'll meet. I confided that I have a crush on player Xavier Cooks. Bit creepy because I’m a 52 year old happily married woman with a family, business, and a lot of sensible shoes… but apparently I’m also a teenager with a poster on the wall in my heart. It is what it is.

Anyway. Lisa comes over and says hello.

But before she finds me, she does something she has never done before. She asks a player for a selfie. Yep. She asks Xavier.

Not for herself. 
For me.

Which makes me laugh, but also realise, it’s so hard to do something for yourself… and weirdly easy when you do it for others!

When it’s 'put yourself out there,' the brain starts screaming: But what if people judge me? What if I’m cringe? What if I’m not ready? What if I post and someone from Year 9 appears in my comments with an opinion?

But when it’s 'do it for someone else,' the brain goes: Sure. No worries. Hold my emotional support water bottle.

And that’s how I think we should all approach content. And visibility. And 'putting ourselves out there.'

Don’t do it for yourself.
Do it for others.

Because someone out there needs what you know, what you’ve learned, what you’ve survived, what you’ve figured out the hard way, and what you can explain in a way that makes them feel less alone.

You don’t have to be loud. You don’t have to be perfect. You just have to be real.

Let that light shine - because it’s not just yours.

And yes, Lisa… I’m still so jealous.

2025 threw up a few big challenges, and despite being someone who usually loves learning (high-input CliftonGallup strengths and all that), having someone confidently explain things while I unpacked boxes in my new home or tried to be patient about Sydney traffic, felt oddly exhausting.

So I stopped.

What I did do, once I started feeling more like myself again, was reach out to some smart experts and book one-to-ones. And here’s the part that surprised me: that was exactly what I needed.

Because in a one-to-one, I can stop someone mid-sentence and say,
“𝘏𝘢𝘯𝘨 𝘰𝘯… 𝘐 𝘥𝘰𝘯’𝘵 𝘨𝘦𝘵 𝘪𝘵” or 
“𝘛𝘩𝘢𝘵 𝘮𝘢𝘬𝘦𝘴 𝘴𝘦𝘯𝘴𝘦, 𝘣𝘶𝘵 𝘐 𝘤𝘢𝘯'𝘵 𝘴𝘦𝘦 𝘩𝘰𝘸 𝘵𝘰 𝘢𝘱𝘱𝘭𝘺 𝘪𝘵 𝘪𝘯 𝘮𝘺 𝘸𝘰𝘳𝘭𝘥.”
 
Sure, one-to-one costs more than listening to a free podcast. But tailored thinking, applied directly to your situation, with the ease to ask any question? For me, that was energetically spot on.
