This eyesore building is no longer going to be the first thing you see as you arrive at Warrington Bank Quay station.

Instead, people will see banks of cutting edge data centres used by some of the worlds largest companies for AI infrastructure. 

I had the pleasure of a tour around the former Unilever site acquired by Platformdc this morning, with my good friend, Neil Rustage. 

The skyline of Warrington is about to change and this building which was once part of Warrington’s manufacturing history is to be replaced with something that is going to put Warrington on the innovation map. 

I’m slightly envious of Neil and the opportunity he has to work on a project that has significant legacy potential. 

But I’m also grateful not to have the headaches he’s probably going to have with such an ambitious project including demolition, bureaucracy, conspiracy theorists (local news content commenters are a delight) and everything else in between. 

It’s an inspiring project that I’m looking forward to seeing progress along with the wider benefits to Warrington.

In the summer, someone called us "too small".

Made me laugh.

To me, small means...
→ I actually know my clients' names
→ When they call, they get me, not a junior account exec
→ We can pivot fast when something isn't working

Take a client we've been working with for 4 months.

Their conversion rate was stuck.
We dug into their customer journey.

Found the problem immediately.

Their "Contact Us" button took you on a 3-click journey before you even saw a form 😱 

Then when you finally got there.
It had 5 different sections.
Each section had 6-12 fields.

Just to ask for a call back...MADNESS!

So, we decided to put a contact form on every page.
And slim it down to 5 fields total.

Fixed it within a week.

8 years ago I chose my daughter over my career.

Some people thought I was mad.

And not everyone understood.
Some still don't.

I took 6 months off at 33.
No job. No work. No income.

Not to travel the world.
Not to "find myself."

I stayed home with my 7-month-old daughter, Tilly.

Because I was tired of missing everything.
Getting home just in time for bedtime.
Only seeing her properly at weekends.
Watching her grow up in glimpses.

That wasn't the dad I wanted to be.
That wasn't the person I wanted to be.

So I stepped away.

→ Took on the nursery runs.
→ Did the house stuff.
→ Gave my ex-wife space to focus on her career.

People questioned it.

"What about your progression?"
"You'll fall behind."
"Is this really worth it?"

But here's what they didn't get.

Choosing to be present didn't make me care less about work.

It made me care more about doing it right.

When I knew what actually mattered to me, I stopped wasting time on the stuff that doesn't.

I became more focused.
More efficient.
More intentional.

I still work hard.
I still want to achieve things.
I still go above and beyond for my clients.

But I won't sacrifice my life to fit someone else's idea of ambition.
I won't miss my kids growing up chasing validation.

8 years later, I'm still figuring it out.
But I know my values haven't changed.

There's still loads I want to achieve.

The difference is, I won't sacrifice everything else to get there.

Because I chose everything else alongside work.

At 39, I thought those days were long gone.

Then Germany happened!

A place that I've been visiting since I was 9 months old.

The place where I learned to walk.

When visiting friends this year, we got asked to play their football team.

"Why not?" I thought.

Hadn't played a full 90 minutes of 11-a-side in 13 years!

Was I nuts?

The answer was clear...

Abso-freaking-lutely NOT!

First 20 minutes were rough.
Legs felt heavy.
Lungs on fire.

But then something happened. 

My body remembered what it felt like to compete.
My brain remembered when to make the run.
I scored the 1st half equaliser.

Felt like I was 25 again.

Sometimes the things you think you've lost are just waiting for the right moment to come back.

I've always treated age as just a number.
At 40, I fully believing it like never before!

Your body remembers more than you think.
And sometimes you just need to say "why not?"

At 21, I accidentally figured out the secret to loving your job.

By 25, I'd completely forgotten it!

My first real job was IT Helpdesk at a construction company.
Placement year at uni.

Hated the work.
Loved the people.

Without really knowing it, I'd stumbled onto what actually mattered.

But by 25 I got seduced by the shiny stuff.

Better salary.
Fancier job titles.
Impressive company names.

Spent years chasing those things.

Don't get me wrong - I enjoyed most of my jobs.

But that was because of the people, not the perks.

My last employed role taught me this the hard way.

Great wage.
Good benefits.
Decent title.

But as the people I loved working with started leaving, none of that mattered anymore.

The job felt empty.
The money couldn't fix it.

So at 34, I left.

Turns out 21-year-old me had it right all along.

Work with people who inspire you.
Everything else is just noise.

21-year-old me was smarter than I gave him credit for!

Great turnout. Met so many people.
Everyone was really friendly.
Had some brilliant conversations.

Even got some free samples!!

The dress code was a bit unusual though.

Turns out trick-or-treating is the best networking event of the year.

Who knew? 😄 

Turns out the best networking happens when you're not actually networking.

Mystery solved.

Your website isn't a shop window.

It's a conversation!

And most businesses are having really boring conversations.

A law firm came to us this year.

"We get loads of traffic but no one's enquiring."

Looked at their site.

Classic case of talking AT people not TO them.

→ Their contact form was buried.
→ Their services were confusing.
→ Their signposts were non-existent
→ Their "about us" was all corporate waffle.

We simplified everything.

→ Made it clear what they actually do.
→ Put the enquiry form where people could find it.
→ Created content that hit pain points and resonated.

40% more enquiries in 3 months.

Same traffic.
Better conversation.

Your visitors aren't numbers on a screen.
They're people trying to solve a problem.

Talk to them like humans.
Not like walking wallets.

2 new leads from 2 posts last week.

Neither mentioned my services.

Neither shared marketing tips.

Both were just... me.

I'll be honest with you. 

The posts that actually generate business for me aren't the ones where I'm trying to sell.

They're the ones where I'm just being myself.

No call-to-action.
No "DM me for more info."
Just my perspective. My values. My story.

And that's what people connected with.

People don't just want to buy services.
They buy from people they trust.

And you can't build trust by constantly talking about what you do.
You build it by showing who you are.

Your struggles.
Your decisions.
Your beliefs.

I see so many people on here sharing tips and case studies.

They have their purpose.
But they're missing the point.

People want to work with humans, not content machines.

They want to know:
→ How do you handle pressure?
→ What do you stand for?
→ What kind of person are you when things get tough?

Yes, people and businesses want to make money.
I want to help them do that.

But I find that the big influence is the person.
That's what actually influences buying decisions.

So be yourself.
Don't hide behind your services.

Let people see who you really are!

Last week I said I'd been taking a break from LI.


Part of the reason was that I was in a bit of a creative rut.

You know the feeling.
Staring at a blank screen.
Nothing coming.

I'm not one for just saying s**t for the sake of it.

Then I saw an ad for Blaze AI on Instagram.

"AI that writes like you."

So, I thought I'd give it a test.

Set up my brand voice.
Fed it my tone and style.
Let it generate some posts.

The result...

Not great FOR ME.

It's:
→ Well written
→ Technically competent
→ Gives you lots of content quick

But at the end of the day, it was completely soulless.

It sounded like generic marketing content.

Not like me at all.

Don't get me wrong - I can see why it would work for lots of people.

→ If you're stuck for content ideas.
→ If you don't know where to start.
→ If you can't afford an agency to help.

But for me,

I'd rather write one authentic post than a weeks worth of AI-generated ones.

Funny thing is, testing it actually helped spark my creativity again.

Sometimes you need to try something to remember what you don't want.

That caption....

Not the flex you think it is!

Data-driven marketing" gets thrown around a lot.

But what does it actually mean?

For me, it's simple.

Stop guessing. Start knowing.

Been working with a big e-commerce site recently.

Their GA4 was showing £600k+ in revenue.
But no proper conversion tracking in place.

They were flying blind.

All I did was install their tracking properly.
Added the basics they should have had from day one.

Conversions went from 295 to 2,493.
That's a 745% increase.

Conversion rate jumped from 0.18% to 7.62%.

Same website. Same traffic. Just proper data.

So what's the "impressive" result?

Just fixing what should never have been broken.

Makes you wonder how many businesses are making decisions based on guesswork when the fundamentals aren't even in place.

Sometimes the biggest wins come from doing the basics right!
