My Journey 
When I was 23 I decided to buy a Taco Del Mar restaurant... I knew I had made a huge mistake at 2pm the first day when only 3 customers had walked in... (and two of them were my parents haha) 
For 5 years I worked hard to grow sales every way I could think of and in the end, tripled our revenue which still didn't seem to matter on the profit side. (I lost a lot of money 💰)

The one thing that I seemed to be the best at in the restaurant endeavor was marketing and getting people in the door. 

Fast forward to 2014 when my wonderful wife Carmen (definitely my better half) started a modest baby clothing line and was selling at craft markets. 

I asked if I could test running a few ads on Facebook... and the rest is history. I learned every up-and-coming strategy and tactic and helped grow the small start-up to a multi-million dollar company and still growing!

Since then we have acquired multiple DTC brands and have built an agency (upGrowth Commerce) to service our brands as well as others who are in a similar situation to us!

In 2019 we started the podcast "secrets to scaling your e-commerce brand" which is now in the top 50 business/marketing podcasts in multiple countries including Canada and the United States.

I realize that if you haven't gone HARD on TikTok shop you won't be able to to before BFCM

Me: “Not could be cannibalizing your other channels… you ARE.”

That moment hit hard!!!

Because here’s what a lot of brands are doing right now:

They take their main hero SKU
Sell it full price everywhere else

Then make it stupid cheap on TikTok Shop “just to get sales” + get momentum

And then they’re shocked when

Amazon flatlines

TOTAL MER blows up

Retail partners start asking questions
TikTok didn’t break your unit economics.

You did!!

The way I think about TikTok Shop:

It’s the only channel that will pay you (even breakeven) to give you insane impressions.
If you even make $1 profit there

And you’re getting a $30 CPM worth of awareness for free
You’re winning.

The problem...

Most brands aren’t tracking the halo.
So they see “low-margin TikTok orders”

Instead of “cheap reach that lifts Amazon / Shopify / retail”.

If I were rebuilding your TikTok Shop strategy from scratch, I’d do 3 things:

1️⃣ Protect the hero
 
No more “fire sale” pricing on the SKU that drives your brand.
 Use:

 – Smaller bundles
 – Trial sizes
 – TikTok-only variants
 
And keep price architecture consistent across channels.

2️⃣ Define your blended model
 
Decide up front:
 – What MER are you happy with including TikTok
 – How you’ll measure halo (Amazon, Shopify, retail lift)
 – What CPM you’re effectively getting from organic + creator content

If TikTok is breakeven but blended MER is up and CPMs are down… keep going.

3️⃣ Make TikTok the awareness engine, not the profit center (at first) 
 
Creators get you reach.
 
Reach fills retargeting pools on Meta, Google, Amazon, retail.
 
Your job is to:

 – Seed a ton of creators
 – Let TikTok Shop break even
 – Harvest the profit off-platform

TikTok Shop doesn’t have to be “super profitable”. (at first)

It has to be super scalable.

I had to introduce the mobile concept to potential clients who either had no e-commerce (restaurants), or had no affiliate program.

In order to plan and execute these campaigns I had to communicate directly with merchants, agencies and the affiliate networks.

I have gained a huge knowledge of affiliate marketing from a publisher point of view including the various commission structures of CPM, CPC and CPA.

I have strong presentation skills as I regularly pitched to new clients, as well as presenting campaign reviews.

In addition to my role as an account manager, I was responsible for the mobile newsletter.

I was also responsible for marketing the mobile app and generating user downloads.

But here we are.

I picked up a SURI brush recently and honestly, it’s one of the best product experiences I’ve had in a long time.

The box feels premium.
The unboxing is clean and intuitive.
The emails are thoughtful and well-paced.
The product itself? Genuinely beautiful.

Most oral care brands stick to the clinical, sterile category norms.

SURI went the other way.

They’ve clearly thought through every touchpoint. not just how it looks, but how it feels.

And that’s what stood out most.

This isn’t about branding for the sake of it. It’s about consistency.

Every interaction from first click to first brush reinforces the same message:

Quick win idea in the run up to Black Friday:

If someone returns to your website and has something in their cart...

Open that cart immediately to show them.

So many people forget they've already put a cart together, or forget what they were looking at before.

If you've got your carts set to retain the contents indefinitely then you might even find people coming back after months and they'll get a reminder of why they were there last time.

This is especially powerful now in the run up to Black Friday.

If you are going to be running a deal in the coming weeks, get this in place, and then email your list to let them know about it, and to prepare their carts in advance.

This will work really well for anything that is actually limited or exclusive

Everyone likes to do a bit of window shopping

So encourage them to do it now while they aren't overwhelmed

Tell them to build the cart of their dreams.

When you drop the Black Friday sale they'll all come back to the website to see their existing cart

and its just the 1 click to get to checkout.

Smooth, seamless, and a great way to build up attention ahead of Black Friday.

If there’s building work going on, we’ll just reschedule. Background noise doesn’t always get picked up, but if it’s distracting you, it’ll affect how you come across.

2. Strong connection

Good wifi is fine, wired is better. Tech issues kill momentum fast.

3. Minimise distractions

Close Slack. Mute notifications. Switch off your phone. Simple stuff, but you'd be surprised how often it gets forgotten.

4. Use headphones

Echo can be brutal for editing, especially if you're on a laptop mic.

5. It’s a conversation, not an interview

Don’t just answer and wait for the next question. Share your thoughts, ask questions back, go deeper.

6. Let the host contribute

The best episodes feel like a real back-and-forth. Ask the host what they think, chances are, they’ve got strong views too.

7. Give detail, give examples

Don’t just say what worked, share how you figured it out. What surprised you? What went wrong first?

8. And don’t worry about messing up

We edit. If you want to start again or rephrase something, just pause and go for it.

They'll always err on the side of caution. Always ask you to throw up walls. Create extra friction.

Because every day you don't get sued, they're justifying their jobs.

Here's what this overprotection actually costs you:

Your cookie popups? Overengineered and damaging conversions.

T&Cs opt-in required to purchase? Overcomplicated and damaging conversions.

Marketing opt-in for abandoned cart? Overkill and damaging conversions.

Just to be clear: I'm absolutely on the side of obeying the law.

But you should be doing the minimum required to stay compliant while protecting your business.

There's a difference between being reckless and being strategic.

Smart businesses know where that line is.

The brands winning right now? They're not the ones with the most cautious legal team.

They're the ones who understand actual risk vs perceived risk.

Your lawyer keeps their job.
You lose the sale.

Guess who wins?

A $9M lighting brand came to us convinced they needed a sales team for B2B orders.

They were ready to hire 3 people, build a CRM, create sales decks - the whole expensive circus.

Here's what we did instead:

Added one form to their site: "Buying for a Business?"

That's it.

The form collected:
- Company details
- Order requirements  
- Preferred contact method

Then routed everything to their existing customer service team.

No new hires.
No complex B2B portal.
No 6-month implementation.

First month results:
→ 47 B2B inquiries
→ $73k in bulk orders
→ Zero additional headcount

But here's what really surprised them:

Most business buyers never even used the form.

They just bought directly through the site like regular customers. They didn't want special treatment or negotiated pricing.

They wanted simplicity.

The form just gave them confidence that B2B was welcome.

Sometimes the solution isn't adding complexity.

It's removing the friction you didn't know existed.

That lighting brand saved $180k/year in salaries they didn't need.

And captured $800k in B2B revenue they were already losing.

All from one form and a mindset shift.

Stop solving problems with headcount.

Start solving them with clarity.

I didn’t think anyone wanted to hear from a “CRO guy.”

But here’s what happened when I started showing up consistently:

- Built an email list of 7,500+ from CRO content

But I've seen the same products, same price points, same audiences converting at 4-5% with proper CRO.

That's the difference between scaling profitably and burning cash.

Stop thinking of CRO as just conversion optimisation.

Start thinking of it as Customer Revenue Optimisation - the foundation that makes everything else work.

Because without it, you're just paying Facebook to send visitors to a leaky bucket.

Proceeds to add nothing remotely attention catching.

No thanks.

Over the last 12 or so months I've been running a bit of an experiment in my personal life.

It involves having shared custardy of the family dog. 

He stays with us for anything from a few days over a weekend, to 5 weeks while my parents are off enjoying a trip to Japan & Korea.

I think I'm now able to state with absolute scientific certainty that everyone should get a dog.

It is 100% the best thing you can do for your mental health, especially if you work from home a lot.

Their very presence brings joy and Charlie loves nothing more than to receive a bit of fuss from random strangers in the pub.

Remember, a dogs not just for Christmas, but it absolutely will be the best gift you ever get

We’re nearing the end of the year. Things are calming down, and we’ve moved past the chaos of Black Friday.

But here's the thing, don't coast for the rest of the year.

It's tempting to start winding down but there’s still plenty of opportunity to make a difference.  

You don’t need to launch new channels or overhaul your Shopify store.

If there’s one thing you focus on before the year ends, make it this:

Improve the customer experience.

Think about the unboxing experience, post-purchase emails, making support easier to reach or streamlining the returns flow.

Ask yourself: "What can we do to make our customers’ lives better?"

That’s the kind of simple, impactful change that pays off long-term.

Don’t let the year close without taking that time.

Your customers will thank you, and so will your revenue.

Keep pushing, even when things slow down.

If one is weak, your conversion rate suffers, no matter how much traffic you throw at it and no matter how much you tweak your ads.

Start with this:

 → Walk your own funnel
 → Mark every point of hesitation, confusion, or indifference
 → Fix that first

Stop tweaking headlines and start fixing the actual blockers.
