There’s a word I hear often before someone shares an idea.
“𝗝𝘂𝘀𝘁.”

• “Just a quick thought…” 
• “Just an idea…” 
• “Just a small question…”

It seems harmless, but that one word quietly changes how the idea is received.

It lowers the perceived weight of what comes next.

The room hears hesitation before the idea even arrives.

Over time, small language habits like this shape how people respond to you.

Not because the idea lacks value, but because the framing softens it before it even lands.

“How do we know if communication is actually the problem?”

I loved this question because on paper, everything looked strong. Their team was experienced with global talent and nothing obvious was wrong.

But in meetings, those voices stayed quiet. There was friction no one could quite name.

𝗛𝗲𝗿𝗲’𝘀 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗮𝗻𝘀𝘄𝗲𝗿:
If your best people are editing themselves in real time (or staying quiet altogether), communication is not a side issue.

It’s a systems issue.

𝗖𝗼𝗺𝗺𝘂𝗻𝗶𝗰𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗱𝗲𝗯𝘁 𝘀𝗵𝗼𝘄𝘀 𝘂𝗽 𝘄𝗵𝗲𝗻 𝗱𝗲𝗰𝗶𝘀𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀 𝗴𝗲𝘁 𝗱𝗲𝗹𝗮𝘆𝗲𝗱 𝗯𝗲𝗰𝗮𝘂𝘀𝗲 𝘁𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗴𝘀 𝘄𝗲𝗿𝗲𝗻’𝘁 𝗰𝗹𝗲𝗮𝗿 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗳𝗶𝗿𝘀𝘁 𝘁𝗶𝗺𝗲.

It’s subtle. Communication problems rarely explode, they compound. 

And the cost shows up later; in misalignment, turnover, and preventable risk.

Recently, I spoke with a group of moms in our homeschooling community about something people rarely talk about openly:

The long road from 𝗳𝗶𝗻𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗶𝗮𝗹 𝘀𝘂𝗿𝘃𝗶𝘃𝗮𝗹 𝘁𝗼 𝗳𝗶𝗻𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗶𝗮𝗹 𝘀𝗼𝘃𝗲𝗿𝗲𝗶𝗴𝗻𝘁𝘆.

At one point, I shared a moment from my own journey that still sticks with me.

There was a time when investing $5 felt too risky.

Not because I didn’t believe in investing, but because when you’re in survival mode, every dollar feels like protection....especially as a single mom with two kids. 

So I found another way.

Instead of using the money I needed, I started investing cashback rewards from my debit card.

It felt small, but it changed something important:

It showed me that moving toward financial sovereignty doesn’t always start with big moves.

There’s a sentence I’ve heard many non-native English-speaking professionals say in meetings:

“𝗟𝗲𝘁 𝗺𝗲 𝗺𝗮𝗸𝗲 𝘀𝘂𝗿𝗲 𝗜 𝘀𝗮𝘆 𝘁𝗵𝗶𝘀 𝗰𝗼𝗿𝗿𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗹𝘆.”

It’s usually followed by a thoughtful idea or a very good question.

But before they say it, they pause.

Not because they don’t understand the topic, but because they want to say it 𝗽𝗲𝗿𝗳𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗹𝘆.

Many highly skilled professionals carry this extra layer of pressure in conversations.

Over time, that pressure can slow people down in moments where their voice actually matters.

But the goal of communication at work isn’t perfection.

It’s clarity.

And clarity doesn’t require perfect English; it requires the confidence to share the idea.

𝗖𝗼𝗺𝗺𝘂𝗻𝗶𝗰𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗶𝗻 𝗵𝗲𝗮𝗹𝘁𝗵𝗰𝗮𝗿𝗲 𝗳𝘂𝗻𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀 𝗹𝗶𝗸𝗲 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗳𝗼𝘂𝗻𝗱𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗼𝗳 𝗮 𝗵𝗼𝘂𝘀𝗲.
 
When it’s strong, everything runs smoothly. Most of the time, it’s invisible.
 
It sits behind every decision, every interaction, and every outcome.
