Be Broadcast is a specialist broadcast PR consultancy. This means we'll get you on TV and Radio. 

To get there, we’ll get under the skin of your brand and build a campaign which fits both key messaging and the key factors broadcasters will need.

Our USP is Senior Delivery and Senior Consultancy.

Put simply this means the person you deal with will be the person who also deals with media. All too often in this sector, things are lost in translation as they are handed over.

My goal for 2025 was to build a community. 

I love it when a plan comes together. 

I hosted my first event last night: for the Comms Career Supporters’ Club (our free online community), and clients - past and present.

And 20 people from my group coaching programme met each other in person for the first time. 

It was a dream event. A ‘no-agenda, no-rules’ meet up for the comms community, and they showed up in massive numbers. 

If evidence were ever needed that we’re all connected, last night was it. 

So many people knew each other, and loads of new connections were made. 

I gave an unprepared and ridiculously gushing speech, which came from the heart. 

Look at all these smiling faces. Such joy!

Starting a new job as a senior comms leader is like stepping onto stage halfway through a play.
 
You know your lines and have the skills to perform. But the set’s unfamiliar, the cast is looking at you for cues, and what the hell is this play anyway?
 
You passed all the auditions because you're the comms expert. But in those early days, it’s easy to feel like the understudy.
 
If you're feeling a bit wobbly, that's totally normal. It doesn’t mean you’re not excellent at what you do.
 
Here’s how to find your feet faster:
 
• Ask for an induction plan before day one, to give you a head start.  
  
• Nail down your objectives in writing. Ambiguity is a confidence killer.
  
• Don’t bluff. Ask ALL the questions. There's not such thing as a stupid one.
  
• Slow down. Listen carefully. You don’t need to prove your value on day one.
  
• Identify the internal influencers. They're your shortcut to understanding context and connecting with the right people.
  
• Track small wins. Collect the evidence that you're making progress.
  
• Be kind to yourself. You're new and it will get easier.
  
You were hired for your communication expertise, not your knowledge of the organisation. That will come in time.

My nose piercing was discussed in a board meeting.
 
This was decades ago, when I was working at a PR agency.
 
The board decided I had to remove it. That teeny, tiny silver stud apparently gave out the wrong signal to clients.
 
A few years ago, a stranger commented on one of my posts on a completely unrelated subject, expressing his hatred for my nose ring.
 
I took that comment and turned it into a post about strangers’ inappropriate comments on women’s appearances. It went viral — which, honestly, was a horrible distraction for a few days.
 
Last week at the Comms Career Supporters' Club winter social, someone thanked me for being unapologetic about wearing a nose ring. She had one too.
 
Funny how polarising such a small accessory can be.
 
It's weird what people choose to get upset about. A nose ring. A tattoo (I've got those too). A post that wasn't written for them. 

Ragebait has just been added to the Oxford English Dictionary, and I can see why. Entire careers are built on stoking outrage. But what offends one person can be inspiration to someone else.
 
Someone out there will disapprove no matter what you do. If you’ve ever worried about not fitting in, someone else might be quietly watching, and thinking, “Thank you. I needed to see that.”

Me aged 53 would outperform me aged 27* in virtually every meaningful way.

Apart from in the pub. I wouldn’t be able to handle those PR drinking sessions now.

There are the obvious ways older is wiser: industry knowledge, experience and technical skills. 

But also:

• Common sense that comes from being alive for 5 decades
• Having lived and worked through scenarios younger people haven't experienced
• Knowing what's important and being able to prioritise
• Resilience when everything goes sideways
• Efficiency, born out of necessity
• Confidence I can do the job well

These aren't qualities we're born with. They're developed through decades of challenges, failures, recoveries, and successes.

Yet the job market routinely undervalues these strengths, instead chasing "digital natives" and "fresh thinking" while systematically pushing out older people, with their proven experience.

Smart organisations create teams that include older people, for diversity of thought and experience. Afterall, we're the age group with the purchasing power, as well as an understanding of Gen Z (our kids) and the Boomer generation (our parents).

*I chose 27 because that's the age I feel.

The self-employment survival guide
 
It’s been nearly 12 years since I packed up my desk, handed in my pass, and stepped into the unknown world of self-employment.
 
Here’s what I’ve learnt about staying sane, solvent and motivated when you’re building your own thing.
 
Collaborate:
You can't do it all. Don’t be afraid to hand over the IT, or your bookkeeping to a specialist. In the early days of self-employment I bartered my services with other self-employed people who were also starting out.
 
Control your finances:
Cash flow WILL be unpredictable. Get a decent accountant and ask questions all year round, not just at year-end. Keep money aside to pay your tax bill - 15% to 20% of your income. 
 
Pricing:
The temptation to undercharge is strong, especially in the beginning. Charge for the years you've put into this, not the hours the client's getting.
 
Comparisonitis:
Don’t compare your beginning to someone else’s middle. Keep your eyes on your own paper. If you’re going to compare anything, let it be how far you’ve come. You’ve made more progress than you give yourself credit for.
 
Figure out your 'why':
Mine was freedom, flexibility and family. Figure out why you’re doing it, and if what you’re doing isn’t working – change it. If you're not happy where you are move, you are not a tree 🌳.
  
Visibility:
You can’t be hired if no one knows you exist. Talk about what problems you solve, share your wins, and let people know how you help. Repeat, repeat, repeat. The clients who need you can’t hire you if they don’t know you’re there.
 
Create repeatable offers:
Create packages, processes, or products you can deliver again and again. It saves time, builds brand clarity, and helps you build without burnout.

Build your safety net:
Plan for the quiet months, for they will come. Whether it’s savings, a retainer client, or another income stream, do what you need to stay afloat. There's no shame in diversifying. 

Protect your energy:
Guard your calendar, set boundaries with clients, and take real time off. Saying yes to everything is a fast track to burnout. 

Flexible consistency:
Some months will be brilliant, others will suck. You will want to give up. Success comes from sticking with what works, and figuring out what to tweak. The only way to fail is to quit.

Job description euphemisms 💩 - decoded.

Does anyone else get the feeling that more and more job descriptions are being written by AI?

The job title is really specific, but dig into the job spec and it seems what they really want is a UNICORN 🦄.

Job descriptions have become a long shopping list of skills and experience which it would take a whole team to deliver.

And then there are the euphemisms which some clever soul (or maybe AI) came up with to make the job sound attractive.

Let me decode the most popular ones so you can save yourself the trouble of applying:

🚩 “Fast-paced environment”. We don’t have enough people to do the work, so you’ll be running around like a blue-arsed fly doing the jobs of several people simultaneously.

🚩 “A varied job where you’ll be wearing many hats”. See above. The hats in question are those of the previous employees who have long since fled this sinking ship.

🚩 “You’ll need to be flexible”. Notice they’re not offering flexibility in return. You need to keep your phone on 24/7 and be at the beck and call of the leadership team. Don’t expect to be paid overtime for this.

🚩 “We’re like a family”. We’re like a cult.

🚩 “Competitive salary”. Oh yeah? If it’s so competitive, why won’t you tell us what it is?

🚩 “Flat structure”. There is no discernible leadership.

🚩 “You’ll need to be adaptable”. Be prepared to pivot from one strategy to another, on the whim of the CEO.

🚩 “We work hard and play hard”. No one here has a life outside of work. Expect to work long hours and then be pressurised into going to the pub to drown your sorrows.

Seeing these in a job description makes me want to run for the hills.
