Here's the thing most people miss about networking:

The biggest career decisions happen in rooms you're not in.

Stop pitch-slapping people on LinkedIn.

If you don't know the term: pitch slapping is when you connect with someone and IMMEDIATELY ask them for something. A job. A referral. A "quick 15-minute chat."

You wouldn't walk up to a stranger at a party and say "Hi, can you get me a job?" So why do it on LinkedIn?

Here's what to do instead:

Give before you ask. Every single time.

5 ways to give value BEFORE you need something:

1️⃣ Reference their work: "I saw your talk at [event] and your point about X changed how I think about Y."

2️⃣ Share their content: Repost something they wrote. Add your own take. Tag them.

3️⃣ Send a relevant article: "Saw this and thought of our conversation about [topic]."

4️⃣ Make an introduction: Connect them with someone THEY would benefit from knowing. (For a talk, for an opportunity, for some insight)

5️⃣ Close the loop: If they gave you advice before, tell them you used it and what happened next.

The people who get replies on LinkedIn aren't the ones who ask the best questions. They're the ones who give the most value first.

Try this today: 
Pick ONE person you want to connect with. Find something they've posted. Leave a thoughtful comment. That's it. No ask. Just value.

Here's the kicker though, it has to be genuine. 
For me, I love to check out what people have done and what makes them tick, and what interests me about them. Then I genuinely reach out about what does. 

If it's not genuine, it's going in the garbage. 
People can smell that shit a 1000 miles away away.

The ask comes later. And when it does, they'll actually want to help.

SUNDAY FUNDAY - Time to talk about fun random nerdy side projects!

This weekend, I spent WAY too many hours playing with Claude Code. 
(AND HOLY MOLY IT'S FUN) 

So I started with a problem. I'm always digging for what to write about, or what to post about.

And then I had a thought. 
"Hey I've given lots of good advice on my calls, why don't I start there?"

So first, I built a tool to programatically extract every single call transcript I've had in the past 2 years from Fathom using my Fathom API key.

Then, I built another tool that used Python to sift through and analyze 437 coaching call transcripts.

Every conversation I've had. Every question someone asked me. 
Every piece of advice. Every playbook I walked through.

So I thought: what if I turned this into something searchable? 
Something I pull from every time I write a post, a newsletter, or prep for a talk?

So I built a giant SQL database of my advice, testimonials, stories, and more!
Wild right?

Here's what it found across 97,000+ speaker turns:

→ 192 playbooks (step-by-step frameworks I've taught)
→ 35 frequently asked questions (questions people keep asking over and over)
→ 21 stories I tell frequently (the ones everyone remembers)
→ 14 new testimonials I hadn't captured (wins my clients earned)

262 pieces of content tagged and categorized across 25 topics. 
And it's now all searchable for me inside a SQL database.

A databank of who I am as a coach. What I teach. How I teach it.

I'm not a software engineer by trade. 

However I have spent enough time learning software development, and building mini projects to make me somewhat dangerous.

And now powered up by Claude Code. 
Shit man...

The loop of idea → build → ship is addictive. 
I'd finish one feature and immediately start on three more. 🔥

I had to learn to capture all the things I wanted to do directly inside Github Issues so I don't all the things I wanted to work on, or bugs I wanted to fix or new features I wanted to add.

Learning Claude Code has been one of the most FUN things I've done in years. 

Coming up with ideas and watching them come to life in hours instead of months? 

I'm hooked.

(I also had it create a beautiful visualization report of the outcomes people had in my program based on 58 survey respondents - check it out in the first comment)

Here's the thing. I'm a builder. I can't help it.

Some of these are polished. Some are held together with duct tape and vibes. 

Some are completely empty repos I created at 2am with big dreams and zero follow-through.

And here's what 130 projects across 10 years actually looks like:

2015 → Static HTML pages. Curated lists of coworking spaces and Toronto tech meetups.
2017 → Bootcamp projects. Job boards. Chrome extensions.
2019 → Career calculators. Learning SASS.
2023 → AI integration begins. GPT-3 resume generators.
2025-2026 → Full-stack AI platforms. Voice interview tools. Content engines that learn your writing style.

Every era taught me something. 
Every half-finished project was practice for the next one.

So here's the fun part. I'm using Claude to go through ALL of them.

Not just organize. Actually revisit. Categorize. Figure out which ones still work, which ones are broken, which ones deserve a second life.

Claude helped me:
✅ Generate READMEs for 55+ repos with zero documentation
✅ Rename 8 repos with auto-generated gibberish names to things humans can understand
✅ Add descriptions and topics to every single repo so they're searchable
✅ Remove old custom domains I'm not paying for anymore
✅ Scrub an exposed API key (oops)
✅ Build a master catalog of every project with status, tech stack, and tags

Your messy, half-finished projects aren't failures. They're proof you're a builder.

Every empty repo was an idea worth exploring. Every abandoned prototype taught you something.

Sometimes you just need to come back 10 years later with better tools to water them.

"I legit sent your thank-you email and they offered me the job."

That's a real message from a real member of our community.

Here's what happened:

My client applied to a role at a company he liked. They rejected him. They had a "more qualified candidate."

Most people stop here. Delete the email. Move on. Feel crappy.

He sent the post-rejection thank-you email template I share with everyone. 
A simple, gracious note keeping the door open.

They called him back and offered him the job.

Let me say that again: the company that REJECTED HIM called him back.

Why? Because things can change. Fast.

The person they hired takes another offer. 
The role expands and suddenly there's a second opening. 
Something doesn't work out. 

And when that happens, they don't re-post the job and start over. 
They think about who was close. Who was gracious. Who they still remember.

Most people disappear after rejection. My client stayed with it. That made him the obvious call.

And even when the door doesn't reopen at that company? Recruiters talk. Hiring managers refer. Being the gracious "number two" gets your name passed along to the NEXT opportunity faster than starting from scratch.

This is why I tell every single person I work with: your job search doesn't end at rejection. Sometimes it starts there.

So “the riches are in the niches” doesn’t rhyme.

I want to talk about something nobody talks about.

The fear of the BEST-case scenario.

One of my clients was about to post an "open to work" update on LinkedIn. She froze. Not because she was afraid nobody would respond.

Because she was afraid people WOULD respond.

If they responded, she'd have to do interviews. And her last interview experience was brutal. An interviewer (a senior engineer, 15 years older) grilled her on every gap in her knowledge for 45 minutes straight.

So her brain did that thing brains do: it decided the safest option was to not put herself out there at all.

Sound familiar?

Here's what I told her:

That interview was ONE person at ONE company on ONE bad day. 
It's just one measly shitty experience from one shitty person.

And here's what another client told me after she pushed through the exact same fear:

"You're gonna feel like, oh, I'm not capable, I'm not able to do this. But then when you start doing it, you're like, what, I CAN do this. I can do more. And I can excel."

The fear doesn't go away before you act. 
It goes away BECAUSE you act.

What's the one thing you've been avoiding because the best-case scenario scares you?

"What's your experience with [thing I've never done]?"

This question makes people freeze. I get it.

Here's exactly what to say:

"I don't have direct experience with X, but I DO have experience with Y, which is similar because..."

Then you tell them:
→ The challenges you faced
→ The results you got
→ What you learned that transfers directly

That's it. No apologizing. No spiraling. No "I'm sorry, I don't have that."

You redirect.

I coached someone last month who got asked about a specific software platform she'd never touched. She said: "I haven't used that exact tool, but I spent 3 years on a similar platform, and in that time I automated a reporting process that saved my team 10 hours a week."

She got the offer.

Nobody has 100% of the qualifications. NOBODY. Not even the person who wrote the job posting.

Your job isn't to have every answer. It's to show them how you think, how you learn, and what you bring.

Try this: right now, think of one skill you DON'T have that keeps showing up in job postings. Then write down your closest experience. That's how you redirect.
