Kia ora, I’m Milly, and I’m an early person.  Always to my departing train, often to trends, and usually to companies. I’ve worn both the ‘founder’ hat and ‘early employee’ hat, having spent 15years carving out a career on my terms. One that looks weird on a CV but feels great on the inside. As a farm-gal from New Zealand who decided milking cows wasn't the vibe long-term, I've been living abroad since 2012. Slowly exploring 65+ countries; optimising for building an 'actually interesting' career. 

Before I turned 30, I co-owned a hostel in Thailand, co-founded a wine tour in Australia, and launched an illustration agency in the UK (failed, oops!). I've loved speaking about the future of work + generalists at Web Summit, Skyscanner, Turing Fest, Mercury, Beehiiv, The London School of Economics + more.

So I went and did the thing I swore I'd never do. I shipped a dang job board. I'm equally mad and laughing at myself bc I swore till I was blue in the face that I wouldn't do this. 

Because we all know job boards don't work for generalists..

But....

What if they could?

Over the past few weeks I've seen sooo many "we're hiring posts" that say something like.. 

~ we're looking for someone who doesn't fit in the box
~ we're not exactly sure what this role will end up being 
~ we need someone to build the plane while its flying etc etc

These are becoming normal because the world is changing so fast!

So as an experiment I imported the jobs from our beehiiv newsletter and turned them into a public job board

In a few hours, me and Claude:

~ made a fully functioning job board https://lnkd.in/eyTQYJiY
~ implemented a strategy to make the job board a smart SEO play
~ created an automated system on Notion that pings me on Slack when a job is submitted
~ Claude goes searching for weird jobs every morning at 9am and updates our database automatically 
~ features our free value front & centre so anyone landing on the page can a) find unique roles b) go down the Generalist World 🌀 rabbit hole

Olly Meakings nabbed the first featured role for Senja, right before the site started to go viral.

^^ this is what my manager told me 3years ago when I shared my idea for Generalist World 🌀

Then this week, Yuval Noah Harari, one of the most influential thinkers alive said this: 

"Don't focus on a narrow subject like coding. Give equal importance to your head, your heart, and your hands. It is in the combination of these three that humans still have a large advantage over AI."

He's right. 

But I think it's EVEN BIGGER than that.

I have this funny hunch.. that we're living through the literal rise of the generalist. 

It'll seem obvious in retrospect. 

So I'm documenting this. Recording podcasts with our GW members to understand how they think, work, see the world, and the future.

The most repeated advice on this platform is actively ruining people's careers AND making generalists miserable (can you guess what it is?)

Okayyy so, narrowing yourself to a teeny-weeny category worked great in 2015. 

But in 2026, it's all about being WHOLE

Yes, you can still have focus. Yes, you can still have content pillars. Yes, you can still have constraints. 

But in the quest to be *just one* thing, you're burning your optionality, and if you're anything like me, all the joy + fun from work. 

The World Economic Forum research found that the half life of skills is now just 5years, and in tech this can be as short as half that! So... tell me again why niching down to one narrow skillset is smart? 

SO WHAT'S A MODERN PROFESSIONAL TO DO?

Be the most adaptable person in the room :)

Here's what I think this actually looks like (save this):

~ Stack skills that don't obviously go together eg: writing + data analysis. Design + sales. Community building + product strategy. The weirder the combo, the harder you are to replace. 

~ Be spiky! Being a generalist doesn't mean you can't have expertise. It means you don't have a *single* expertise. You're a category of one; someone who has a *set* of spiky skills, stories, experiences, and points of view. 

~ Pleaseeee stop apologising for your squiggly CV. Every pivot taught you something valuable eg: I've had 3 businesses across completely different industries, and every single one made the next one better (even, and perhaps especially, the failures!)

~ Run toward the uncertainty. Because we know stable times reward specialists. Ambiguous times reward the person who can figure it out on the fly. 

~ And follow the joy! I promise you, my most miserable work has been when I'm trying to narrow myself into a rigid box. The happiest I've ever been at work is when I get to go wide, using many of my skills. 

Be whole. Go wide. Be the person nobody can put in a box (proudly!)

I hear this every single week. So I fixed it 👇 👇 👇 

It's absurd to me that there's not way more conversation around the viability + value of zig-zag career paths. 99% of the career content I see is based off the assumption that you'll follow a linear path which, for so many of us, just isn't the case

Through recording 30+ podcast episodes with Generalist World 🌀 members realised we have an absolute goldmine of career advice, frameworks and data. I figured, how cool would it be to turn this into a searchable database?

And bc I'm a Claude Code Girlie, I spun this up while choo-choo-ing through the Scottish highlands 🚂 

You'll be able to filter by:
~ Career type (employee, freelancer, founder, portfolio careerist)
~ Prev backgrounds (eg: academia, humanities, tech etc)
~ Industry 
~ Location

I'm also thinking how sweet would it be to have data like salary expectations / growth over the years

And ofc, imagine this database then became a way to hire these amazing generalists (brain implodes from excitement)

If you're still running meetings *without* an expert communication coach giving you fan-flippin-tastic feedback each time... You might wanna read this!

So I think most know that Granola takes great meeting notes. But then I asked it to take those notes, and coach me on how I show up in meetings. 

The results were...
... uncomfortably accurate

Here's how I did it:

~ let Granola run during my team meeting (btw no awkward bot joins, it just listens through your laptop)
~ post-call, I connected it to Claude, had it review the transcript, & asked it to coach me on my communication style
~ it let me know what I do well, where I lose people + some of my decision-making patterns

Here's a few things I learned about myself... 🫣 🫣 🫣 🫣 🫣 

~ I say "I don't have a strong opinion" when I absolutely DO have a strong opinion (it caught this twice)

~ I let a discussion about go in circles for too long before making a call

~ I think out loud & can reverse myself mid-sentence which can create confusion for the team

~ But it also said I'm great at redirecting when conversations spiral and I'm a confident delegator... so it's not all bad lol

(+ check the comments for the piece of feedback that had me ROLLING laughing)

It then gave me specific coaching tips like: replace 'I don't have a strong opinion' with 'my instinct is X, does that feel right to you?'

You can literally do this after your next meeting today. Just connect Claude to Granola and ask it to give you feedback. 

It's spooky good.
