After the 2009 financial crisis, it became hard to find work...

At that time, I had 2 kids, a wife and a home to support - and few, if any, employment prospects.

I worked part-time retail jobs, took on unpaid marketing gigs, and did anything to find a way to earn an income.

I applied for every suitable position that was available. Time passed and months went by.

In 2010, came a glimmer of hope. I found an opening for a marketing manager position at a curious live chat company called, Contact At Once!

I immediately applied and followed up by chatting into the business.

It was late in the day, no one else was available and the secretary to the CEO answered the chat. 

She let me know it was too late. The CEO had finished interviewing candidates and made a decision to hire someone else. As an act of kindness (and my desperation), she promised to present my application anyway, just in case.

I later learned that CEO, John Hanger would be on a flight that evening and would read my application in the air. He saw something in me that day which would make him change his mind and chose me for the position instead.

That moment changed the trajectory of my family and marketing career.

What John didn't know was that my family and I were on the brink of losing everything. We were on food assistance with nothing left in the bank and no way to pay our bills.

When John selected me for the job, it would turn out to be my highest paying position to that point. An answer to prayer.

But there was a problem. How would I get to work? I had previously sold our family car to make the rent...More prayer.

Long story, short...Dad found out and gifted me his car.

For the next 5 years, I would give Contact At Once! everything I had. I would walk the hallways in the mornings praying for my colleagues and the success of our business.

After 4 years, Contact At Once!, A LivePerson Company grew from $3m to $65m and was acquired by one of the largest live chat companies in the world.

I have to tell this story because it reminds me of the faithfulness of God and the humanity and impact we can have on others in the workplace.

I pray that I can be the kind of vessel for others that John Hanger was for me.
