One of the biggest marketing mistakes I see:
Thinking growth is about more features instead of a better experience.

We assume better marketing means: 
more data
more speed
more capability

But look at the most luxurious trains in the world.

They’re slow.

People don’t love them because they arrive faster. 
They love them because the journey feels intentional.

Great meals.
Great service.
No dead ends.

That’s a marketing lesson hiding in plain sight.

Right now, many products lose users not because the core idea is wrong but because the experience collapses.

A search fails. 
Data is missing. 
The user hits a wall.

So they leave.

Instead of saying: 
“This isn’t available.”

The experience should say: 
“Here’s the next best move.”

Shift the user from:

Area insights.
Nearby alternatives.
Clear next actions.

Google approaches this differently.
When intent is clear, it tries to redirect momentum:
related results, broader matches, alternative paths.

When you design for momentum instead of perfection, your product stops being a tool…

…and starts becoming a decision partner.

That’s when marketing stops fighting churn and starts shaping behavior.

One of the most expensive mistakes product teams make:

Solving problems that don’t exist.

It usually starts with good intentions:
More features.
More workflows.
More “just in case” logic.

But complexity isn’t intelligence.
It’s often uncertainty in disguise.

Here’s a real example:

Slack learned early on that the strongest predictor of retention wasn’t advanced features.

It was whether a user sent their first message.

Users weren’t churning because Slack lacked capability.
They were churning because they didn’t know what to do next.

So onboarding was redesigned around one goal:
Make the next obvious action unmistakable.

Advanced options were delayed.
Choices were reduced.
Everything pointed toward a single step: send a message.

Retention improved, not by adding more,
but by removing confusion.

I see the same pattern everywhere:
– Products bloated before PMF
– Funnels built for objections that never appear
– Dashboards answering questions no one is asking
– Teams optimizing hypotheticals instead of behavior

Great teams don’t design for every possibility.
They design for the moment the user is in, and what they need to do next.
