The career paradox

Do I stay an Individual Contributor,
or do I become “the person who gets credit for other people’s work”.

Nobody says it out loud.
But everyone feels it.

You are told to empower juniors.
Let them shine.
Delegate fully.

At the same time, reality teaches something else.

If you make yourself 𝗳𝘂𝗹𝗹𝘆 𝗿𝗲𝗽𝗹𝗮𝗰𝗲𝗮𝗯𝗹𝗲,
you 𝗯𝗲𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗲 𝗿𝗲𝗽𝗹𝗮𝗰𝗲𝗮𝗯𝗹𝗲.

So most do the awkward middle dance.

→ Delegate the boring parts.
→ Keep the critical pieces.
→ Let others execute, but stay in the spotlight.

Not because they are bad leaders.
Because the system rewards presence, not enablement.

The irony

Great leaders are supposed to build teams that don’t need them.
But most companies aren’t built to protect leaders who succeed at that.

Until approach changes,
this issue won’t go away.

And maybe the real leadership skill today
is learning how to let others grow

That is why selling yourself is not optional.

→ Share 𝗼𝘂𝘁𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗲𝘀, not just effort.
→ Make impact 𝗼𝗯𝘃𝗶𝗼𝘂𝘀, not assumed.
→ Build visibility beyond your immediate circle.

𝗪𝗮𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘁𝗼 𝗯𝗲 𝗱𝗶𝘀𝗰𝗼𝘃𝗲𝗿𝗲𝗱 is not professionalism.
It is 𝘄𝗶𝘀𝗵𝗳𝘂𝗹 𝘁𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗸𝗶𝗻𝗴.

So yes, do great work.
But also make sure it is seen, understood and remembered.

Because silence is not humility.

Traditional ecommerce assumes the user does the work.

Agentic commerce change that model.

The 𝗔𝗴𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗶𝗰 𝗖𝗼𝗺𝗺𝗲𝗿𝗰𝗲 𝗣𝗿𝗼𝘁𝗼𝗰𝗼𝗹 (ACP) allows AI agents to act on user intent and complete purchases safely across merchants.

In simple terms, ACP is a shared contract that lets:

→ AI agents request products and offers.
→ Merchants return verified catalogues, pricing and availability.
→ Payment providers handle checkout, payment and compliance.

𝗛𝗼𝘄 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗳𝗹𝗼𝘄 𝘄𝗼𝗿𝗸𝘀:

→ A user expresses intent to an AI agent.
→ The agent queries merchants using ACP.
→ Merchants respond with validated offers.
→ The agent selects based on user constraints.
→ Checkout happens via trusted payment providers.
→ The user approves.

Example:

“Find me running shoes under ₹5,000 for daily use.”

The agent:

→ Queries merchant catalogues via ACP.
→ Verifies price, stock and delivery.
→ Selects the applicable option.
→ Completes payment securely.

Websites and Brands still matter.
But the primary interface is now an 𝗔𝗜 𝗮𝗴𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗮𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗼𝗻 𝗯𝗲𝗵𝗮𝗹𝗳 𝗼𝗳 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝘂𝘀𝗲𝗿.

I don’t buy it.

This is how progress works.

AI doesn’t make everyone an expert.
It makes expression easier.

And that’s an important difference.

Plenty of people have deep understanding
but struggle to write, explain or structure their thoughts.

AI doesn’t invent their thinking.
It helps them translate it.

Let’s be honest
Very few ideas are born in a vacuum.

→ We remix.
→ We refine.
→ We build on what came before.

AI just does the remix faster.

The edge was never about doing everything manually.
It was about judgment, clarity and intent.

Use AI.
Don’t use AI.
That’s a choice.

But treating it like a moral failure says more about fear than authenticity.

It counted steps.
Measured sleep.

can also influence personnel decisions.

Two outcomes.
One system.

→ Incentives still favour broad data use.
→ Periodic checks miss real-time shifts.
→ Closed models limit outside visibility.

Audits reveal issues.
It doesn’t steer direction.

𝗧𝗵𝗶𝘀 𝗶𝘀 𝘄𝗵𝗲𝗿𝗲 𝗰𝗹𝗲𝗮𝗿 𝗿𝘂𝗹𝗲𝘀 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝘀𝗺𝗮𝗿𝘁 𝗴𝘂𝗮𝗿𝗱𝗿𝗮𝗶𝗹𝘀 𝗮𝗿𝗲 𝗻𝗲𝗲𝗱𝗲𝗱.

Not to slow progress,
but to make sure it moves in the right direction.

→ Ban covert scoring and silent repurposing.
→ Make consent clear, simple, and revocable.
→ Build independent oversight that creates accountability.

These aren’t barriers.
These are guardrails that let innovation scale with trust.

With the right boundaries, the same intelligence that worries us
can become the intelligence that protects us.

Safer workplaces.
Smarter wellbeing systems.
Better experiences.
Real transparency.

But with a protocol built for AI agents.

Till now, digital commerce was built using custom APIs and one-off integrations.
Every platform spoke its own language.
Every checkout was a bespoke journey.

→ Agents handle discovery and intent.

PayPal launched 𝗔𝗴𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗶𝗰 𝗖𝗼𝗺𝗺𝗲𝗿𝗰𝗲 𝗦𝗲𝗿𝘃𝗶𝗰𝗲𝘀 to handle checkout and payment.
Shopify, BigCommerce moved to make merchant catalogues discoverable to AI-native shopping flows.

Different companies.
Same direction.

AI agents are shifting commerce from

→ Browsing to acting.
→ Platforms to standards .
→ Integrations to infrastructure.

This is not about replacing storefronts.
It’s about making commerce usable where AI already works.

The idea is simple.

→ Merchants stay Merchant of Record.
→ Brands retain pricing and control.
→ Payments, validation and compliance move into unified layer.

𝗕𝘂𝘁 𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘆 𝗻𝗲𝘄 𝗽𝗮𝗿𝗮𝗱𝗶𝗴𝗺 𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗲𝘀 𝘄𝗶𝘁𝗵 𝗿𝗶𝘀𝗸.

The biggest one is adoption friction.
Standards only work when enough players agree to implement.

That’s why this phase is not only about innovation
but also about execution.

𝗜𝘁 𝘄𝗮𝗶𝘁𝗲𝗱 𝘂𝗻𝘁𝗶𝗹 𝗜 𝘄𝗮𝘀 𝗿𝗲𝗮𝗱𝘆.

I had my eye on a black hoodie for weeks.

→ Never clicked 𝐁𝐮𝐲. 
→ Got busy. 
→ Forgot about it.

Then, one evening, I opened my favourite store, and there it was.

→ Sitting in my cart.
→ With a discount.
→ 𝘑𝘶𝘴𝘵 𝘧𝘰𝘳 𝘺𝘰𝘶.

I did not even remember adding it. But I checked out anyway.

𝐀𝐈 𝐰𝐚𝐬 𝐰𝐚𝐭𝐜𝐡𝐢𝐧𝐠.

Not in a creepy way (I hope).

→ It tracked where I paused.
→ It noticed my hesitation.
→ It compared my behaviour to millions of other shoppers.

And then, at the perfect moment, it nudged me.

𝐞𝐂𝐨𝐦𝐦𝐞𝐫𝐜𝐞 𝐢𝐬 𝐜𝐡𝐚𝐧𝐠𝐢𝐧𝐠.

→ AI is not just recommending.
→ 𝐈𝐭 𝐢𝐬 𝐚𝐧𝐭𝐢𝐜𝐢𝐩𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐠.
→ Not just showing products 𝐛𝐮𝐭 𝐩𝐫𝐞𝐝𝐢𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐧𝐞𝐞𝐝𝐬.

Which begs the question,

→ If AI knows what we want before we do,
→ 𝐀𝐫𝐞 𝐰𝐞 𝐫𝐞𝐚𝐥𝐥𝐲 𝐝𝐞𝐜𝐢𝐝𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐨𝐫 𝐣𝐮𝐬𝐭 𝐟𝐨𝐥𝐥𝐨𝐰𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐢𝐭𝐬 𝐥𝐞𝐚𝐝?
