Hi. 

My name is Justin Oberman. 

I am a copywriter and creative director who started an advertising agency in 2020 during the pandemic and quietly grew it to 7 figures using nothing but organic LinkedIn posting and word of mouth.

Then, in 2023, I burned out.

So, I closed my agency.

But before I did that, I had a stark realization. 

Besides the influx of business, my following on LinkedIn had grown to over 30k. 

I also realized that most of the people and brands that hired me did so because they liked my Linkedin posts. 

They liked the way I thought. 

I did this without taking classes from the gurus, paying attention to my metrics, or writing for the algorithm.

I figured, if I could do it for me, I could probably do it for other people as well.

So, I started offering ghostwriting services to high-level ad executives and solopreneurs in early 2023.

And the results were pretty phenomenal.

In just 6 months, I grew from zero clients to over 15

Since that day, I’ve taken my unconventional approach to branding and advertising and applied it to ghostwriting and managing the personal brands of several high-profile executives, founders, business owners, and solopreneurs (but I can’t tell you who).

I'm about to hurt my own business with this confession.

I have a friend who's a life coach for men. His content gets insane engagement.

His message isn't unique. Same advice every other male life coach gives.

But he's handsome, charismatic, clearly works out, and commands attention on camera.

Men watch him because they want to BE him. Wives watch because they want their husbands to be him.

One day he asked: "Why do you think my content does so well?"

I gave him the truth: "Initially? Because you're handsome and very charismatic."

He was offended.

Him: "I think it's because my message is clear."

Me: "There are dozens of life coaches for men with messaging just as clear as yours. They don't get a fraction of your traffic."

Look, this isn't a criticism. The stuff he teaches, talks about, and coaches is very good. He is one of the few coaches I know who has actually legitimately helped people.

But I don't think it does him any disservice to understand that part of what helps him get the attention he deserves is that he won the genetic lottery AND worked hard on his body and that charisma comes naturally to him.

That, combined with a clear message, is hard to beat.

It's also a hard thing to copy.

So that's exactly what most people try to do.

𝐂𝐨𝐩𝐲.

Most people obsess over improving their words when they should be improving their story.

But better copy won't save a boring brand.

Trust me. I'm a copywriter. I've spent years helping people write snappier headlines and clearer messaging.

And content quality means nothing if the person behind it isn't doing interesting things.

Here's the good news: You don't need to be handsome, ripped, or charismatic.

You just need to DO something worth watching.

Build something unusual. Take a public risk. Share the messy middle. Create work that makes people curious.

The most interesting posts and newsletters I read aren't from the best writers or the most polished people.

They're from people doing the most interesting things.

So ask yourself: Are you focused on perfecting your message, or on doing something actually worth talking about?

Everyone says they want to ‘understand’ the LinkedIn algorithm.

But the algorithm has no interest in understanding you.

It’s only interested in the humans that are interested in you.

So here’s how to talk to the algorithm without talking to the algorithm:

You don’t.

You talk to the people the algorithm is eavesdropping on.

• Make them laugh
• Make them stop
• Make them DM you
• Make them feel something
• Make them remember you

Humans create attention. 

Algorithms only amplify it.

Learn to talk to the humans, and the algorithm has no choice but to follow.

The best hook I ever wrote made me feel stupid for writing it.

"Most people don't read past the first line."

That was it. Not clever at all.

I almost deleted it.

And I'm glad I didn't because when I hit publish, it outperformed everything I'd written that month.

Because here's the thing about clever hooks:

They make people work.

When something is clever people need to decode what you mean or are trying to say.

And, on social media, the moment people need to think too hard, they scroll.

But obvious hooks work differently because they say just enough of what people are already thinking to grab their attention.

The thing that's so true it feels risky to say. 

The thing that makes someone stop and think "wait, did they just read my mind?"

Good hooks, like good headlines, are not about cleverness.

They may seem clever after the fact, but what they really are is just true and relatable.

And truth is faster than cleverness.

Want to put this into action? 

Do this:

If writing your hook makes you feel smart, delete it.

If it makes you feel like you're stating the obvious, then you're getting close.

The hooks that work the best don't sound like a writer wrote them.

And the best place to find hooks is six to eight lines down (in a long post).  

That's where I found "Most people don't read past the first line."

That's also where I found "The best hook I ever wrote made me feel stupid for writing it."

That's because most people bury the lead, and most people don't get to the point until 6-8 lines down.

The algorithm left dishes in the sink again.

The same skills that make you a good performance copywriter will destroy your LinkedIn posts.

If you're a copywriter (especially a copywriter who learned the craft over the past 10-15 years of performance marketing domination), then you've spent 10 years learning to write copy that converts. Which is great for ads, or advitorials and the like.

But on LinkedIn (or any social media), those skills are working against you.

Because, despite what the gurus tell you, organic social is not a direct response or performance medium. It's a brand awareness medium.

I know a lot of people will disagree with me on this. If you are one of them, go ahead, fight me on this. But first, answer me this:

If it's not a brand awareness platform, then why are you using it to build a personal brand?

Anyway, that's not what I wanted to write about. 

What I wanted to write about was how copywriters should grow their personal brand on LinkedIn, because it works a little bit differently than it does for most people.

And part of the problem is that, as a copywriter, client work teaches you to disappear.

To be a good copywriter, you need to either create someone else's brand voice or learn how to write in it.

Like a method actor, you've trained yourself to become the other person or brand or whatever and ignore anything that's personal to you. 

What you think is irrelevant unless you are thinking like them.

So when you sit down to write your LinkedIn posts, you, quite naturally, think to yourself... 

How do I write a good LinkedIn post? 

And chances are, you land where most people land.

You think you need to make everything sound professional. 

And I get it. 

LinkedIn is a business platform. 

 But it's also a social media platform. And just like any other social media platform, it doesn't reward "professional."

It rewards personally.

That's why someone with zero copywriting ability who writes something like "I don't know what I'm doing" with a picture of them surrounded by 3 cats can crush your well-thought-out AIDA posts.

Believe it or not, people don't come to LinkedIn to be sold to.

They come here to discover, follow, or find.

They come to discover opportunities.

They come to follow trends and updates.

They come to find work or clients.

But they don't come to LinkedIn to get any of those. 

They come to get them from people. 

From human beings.  

The best copywriters on here don't try and pretend they are something they are not. 

They don't try to be the world's most versatile copywriter. 

They write their posts in their own style. 

And the people who hire them hire them because of that style. 

So that's my advice to copywriters trying tio build their personal brand on here. 

Your writing is your work.  

Your writing style is your personal brand. 

And the people who hire you because they like both are the best and easiest clients to work with.

Why my best "selective clarity" didn't happen at my desk yesterday.

I traded my laptop screen for Nature's artwork. Walking through the snowy forest and by the frozen lake, I could feel my energy shifting with every step.

After a year of significant change... recovering from burnout, experiencing grief, and a total shift in identity, these moments are where I find my rhythm again. Where I focus my clarity exploration.

In my corporate life, "rhythm" was dictated by the calendar and someone else's schedule or timeline.
 
Now, as a Book Coach and writer, I've realized that clarity is a resource I get to actively manage.

Yesterday morning involved: ❌ No decisions. ❌ No to-do lists. ❌ No digital noise.

Just the cold air, the crunch of my footsteps, and the space to remember who I am before I decide what’s next.

It's funny how the most productive thing you can do is step into Nature's peace and pace.

I'm back at my laptop today, still fueled by the wildlife and the winter air. But yesterday? Yesterday was a 'reset.' 😃

𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗜𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗿𝘃𝗶𝗲𝘄 𝗘𝗱𝗴𝗲: Sharing your signature methodology or a draft chapter shifts the power dynamic from "candidate" to "authority."

𝗙𝗶𝗹𝗹𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗜𝗱𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝗚𝗮𝗽: Focusing on your book provides a sense of purpose, strength, and clarity. 

𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗣𝗲𝗿𝗺𝗮𝗻𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗦𝗶𝗴𝗻𝗮𝗹: Like a lighthouse, a book is a fixed point of authority that signals your value to the market 24/7. Even when you aren't "active" online or when your posts have vanished from people’s feeds.

𝗔 𝗪𝗶𝗻𝗱𝗼𝘄 𝗶𝗻𝘁𝗼 𝗬𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗟𝗼𝗴𝗶𝗰: It proves you can synthesize complex ideas into a strategic framework or methodology or flow. A skill every team craves. 

To be clear: This isn't a shameless plug for my services. You can absolutely do this on your own. You can start documenting your wisdom today, and you should.

You don’t have to wait for the next opportunity. Build the asset that makes you the only logical choice for it.

Most strategic plans are built on dirty data. 😐

Data gathered from years of expectations, titles, bestowed identities...data that's inaccurate or incomplete. 

In the corporate world, we have this bias for action. If the speedometer isn't moving, we assume we’re losing ground.

But when you’ve hit a loss of identity, it's easy to mistake motion for momentum because "doing" feels safer than "being." Then you double down on "Performance Theater" like:

🔵 Saying yes to every meeting to stay "visible"
🔵 Drifting into lateral roles to stay "busy"
🔵 Chasing another certification just to stay "in the game"
🔵 (fill in the blank for yourself)

I’ve done it. It’s misaligned energy. It’s a strategic plan built on "dirty data." And sometimes you end up going 100 mph in the wrong direction.  

The most productive move you can make right now? 
🛑Stop. Gather the data on yourself. On your Self.

If you’re at Identity Mark Zero™, it’s your "ground zero." It’s that disorienting space where the old maps don't work anymore, and you don’t know who you are. 

But it’s also the only place from which you can truly remember who you are.

I had to create a Selective Clarity™ Practice to survive this space. And this practice is still a core part of my personal and professional life.

You aren't "doing nothing." You’re conducting a high-level audit of your own wisdom (your "clean data"), 𝘀𝗼 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗻𝗲𝘅𝘁 𝗺𝗼𝘃𝗲 𝗶𝘀 𝘀𝘂𝗿𝗴𝗶𝗰𝗮𝗹, not frantic or action for the sake of action.
