'Speak up more.' Easy for them to say, right? People always think if you’re quiet at work, it’s because you’re shy, introverted, or just not confident enough.

But that’s not the real story.

I used to be the quiet one - not just at work, but everywhere. I was the kid who prayed the teacher wouldn’t call on her. I mastered the art of nodding without actually saying a word.

Colleagues would nudge, 'You should speak up.' My manager literally pointed it out on performance reviews.

But they never asked WHY.

Here’s what was actually happening under the surface:

- I was scared I’d sound clueless.
- I dreaded saying the 'wrong' thing and getting side-eyed in meetings.
- I worried someone would challenge me and I’d freeze.
- To be honest, I felt like a fraud half the time, terrified I’d get found out.

None of this is about being 'too quiet'.

It’s about protection.

If you’ve ever been laughed at for a wrong answer, or made to feel small for not knowing something, you learn to hide. You want to avoid the spotlight because the spotlight can burn.

But here’s the catch: safety comes at a cost.

For me, it meant:
- not asking for a pay rise, because what if they said no?
- not putting my ideas on the table, because what if they sounded silly?
- not raising my hand for new projects, because what if I messed up?

Even LinkedIn felt like a stage I wasn’t ready for. What if people found out I didn’t know everything? What if I tripped up publicly, in front of all those polished professionals, and the senior leaders I worked with?

Then something changed.

No, it wasn’t some magical burst of confidence. It was more like desperation, honestly.

My family needed more - I needed to pay off debt. I took a job that required me to get up and train people. I was terrified, but I did it. Then I did it again. And something shifted.

I realised the worst thing was never saying the wrong thing - it was staying invisible.

Now, I work with women who are right where I was. Brilliant, hard-working, but still weighed down by old stories and old scars.

Here’s what I know: 
If you’re holding back because of fear, you’re in good company. Most people are, they just hide it well. But you don’t have to stay there.

You see, it really isn't that hard...
This might seem like nothing to a big creator here, but for me, the math just works out:

- 5 minute post over lunch
- 264 impressions
- 1 follower

Which means 1 potential lead turned customer (I charge $120/hour for my power hour consult calls). 

Not bad for 5 minutes of 'work'. 

This is what it looks like to start and grow your business while working a job, raising kids, and keeping up with my daily self-care routines.

If you freeze every time you’re about to post on LinkedIn, it doesn’t mean you’re not confident. It means your brain has linked ‘being visible’ with ‘being unsafe’. 

I grew up being rewarded for being the quiet, compliant, ‘good girl’. No wonder visibility feels like I’m breaking the rules.

I knew staying silent was costing me, not just money and opportunities, but also the potential to help someone who’s struggling alone with something I’ve overcome.

Eventually, I made the shift from quiet and afraid to sharing my insights and experience. 

I made this shift not by forcing myself to ‘be confident’. Instead, I asked myself, ‘how can I make this feel safer?’

I started:
- posting for one woman who needed my help
- commenting instead of publishing big posts
- setting clear boundaries on what I will and won’t share

That helped me get more comfortable sharing publicly.

Ever wondered why so many smart, talented women hold back in meetings and conversations? It's almost never about confidence.

The truth is, many of us are conditioned to stay silent. We're told not to rock the boat, to wait our turn, to avoid being 'too much'. So even when we have something valuable to say, we hesitate.

Add to that a lack of psychological safety and a healthy dose of perfectionism, and it's no surprise so many brilliant women are biting their tongues.

But here's what really happens when you stay quiet:

You get seen as less confident and less competent.
People assume you have less potential.
Opportunities pass you by.

This isn't just about missing out on a promotion or new business. Over time, it chips away at your self-belief and keeps you stuck.
