I worked as a research assistant for Rijkswaterstaat, the Dutch executive agency for public works and water management. My main task was to conduct a research project on how to scale the use of second hand furniture in the Netherlands to bolster sustainability in the industry.

The research project involved:

- Reviewing the literature on the environmental and social benefits of second hand furniture, as well as the barriers and drivers for its adoption by consumers and businesses.

- Conducting interviews and surveys with various stakeholders, such as furniture manufacturers, retailers, resellers, refurbishers, NGOs, and customers.

- Analyzing the data and identifying the best practices, opportunities, and challenges for scaling the use of second hand furniture in the Netherlands.

- Developing recommendations and strategies for Rijkswaterstaat and other relevant actors to promote and facilitate the circular economy of furniture.

The research project was a valuable learning experience for me, as I gained insights into the complex and dynamic system of furniture production and consumption, and the potential for circular solutions to reduce waste and emissions, while creating social and economic value. I also improved my skills in research design, data collection and analysis, report writing, and stakeholder engagement.

I enjoyed working with a diverse and motivated team of researchers, consultants, and experts from Rijkswaterstaat and other organizations. I am grateful for the opportunity to contribute to this important and innovative project.

Not everyone at your workplace is your friend.

It sounds harsh, until you learn it the hard way.

Early in my career, I believed good work and good intentions were enough. I shared ideas freely. I trusted easily. I assumed everyone wanted to see everyone win.

One day, I watched a project I had worked on for weeks being presented… without my name mentioned once.

That moment taught me something important:
👉 Workplaces are not families.
👉 Colleagues are not automatically friends.
👉 And professionalism is a form of self-respect.

This doesn’t mean being cold or guarded.
It means being clear.
✔ Do your work with excellence
✔ Document your contributions
✔ Be kind, but set boundaries

Now, I follow a simple rule that keeps me grounded:

I learned this the hard way watching my sister.

When you pray for a job, look deeper.
Because a paycheck alone won't fulfill you.

I recently spoke to a candidate who seemed perfect on paper, great salary, benefits, the works.

But halfway through our chat, her voice cracked.
"Every morning, I sit in my car for 10 minutes before walking in.
Not because I'm lazy.
But because I have to mentally brace myself for the day ahead."

That’s when it hit me:

She didn’t need another job.

She needed respect, growth, and peace.

The difference between a boss and a leader is subtle, but powerful.

A boss looks at what you’ve already achieved and piles on more work.
A leader looks at what you’re capable of and opens doors to new opportunities.

I’ll never forget a moment early in my career.
I was delivering results and thought my “reward” would be more tasks. Instead, my manager surprised me: they asked me to lead a client presentation.

At first, I was terrified; I didn’t feel ready. But that single opportunity pushed me out of my comfort zone, built my confidence, and shaped the way I approach challenges to this day.

That experience taught me the kind of leader I want to be: one who recognizes potential and creates space for others to rise.

If you’re in a leadership role, ask yourself:
➡️ Am I only rewarding performance with more work?
➡️ Or am I recognizing potential and creating paths for others to thrive?

True leadership isn’t about control, it’s about empowerment.

I want to say this gently, especially to the version of you that keeps doubting itself.

Stop telling yourself you’re not qualified, not good enough, or not worthy.

Most growth doesn’t happen after we feel ready.
It happens because we start before we feel ready.

Every meaningful step I’ve taken in my life came with the same inner voice:
“Who do you think you are to do this?”

And every time, I learned something important:
👉 Confidence is not a prerequisite for action.
👉 Action is what creates confidence.

Growth begins the moment you:
apply even when you’re unsure
speak up even when your voice shakes
try even when you don’t check every box

You don’t become “qualified” and then act.

You act, and become qualified along the way.

So if you’re waiting to feel ready, polished, or certain…
this is your reminder:
✨ You are allowed to begin before you believe in yourself fully.
✨ You are allowed to learn in public.
✨ You are allowed to grow as you go.

I’m cheering for you especially if no one else is.

One of the biggest blockers in AI isn’t coding.
It’s terminology.

Words like:
• RAG
• Fine-tuning
• Hallucination
• Embeddings
• Transformers
• Vector databases
Sound complex… until they’re explained simply.

Some conversations leave you energized.

That’s not accidental.

The people you surround yourself with quietly shape:

As I step into new year, I’m being intentional about my circle, choosing people who:
 ✔️ ask better questions
 ✔️ think bigger
 ✔️ push me forward

Choose your circle wisely. Your future depends on it.

Age Bias Needs to Stop. 

“We’re looking for someone with more energy.”
 ❌ Too old.
“Not quite the culture fit.”
 ❌ Too experienced.
“You’ve done this already.”
 ❌ We’re intimidated.

This is age bias, and it’s still one of the last acceptable forms of discrimination at work.

Experience isn’t a liability.
It’s:
 ✔ Pattern recognition
 ✔ Calm in chaos
 ✔ Faster decision-making
 ✔ Mentorship and leadership
 ✔ Fewer costly mistakes

Yet too often, seasoned professionals are filtered out with coded language instead of honest conversations.

The future of work doesn’t belong to the youngest or the oldest.
It belongs to teams that combine experience with fresh perspective.
If your company values diversity, inclusion must include age.

True happiness at work comes from feeling valued, not just employed.

Most people think having a job equals happiness.
They're wrong.

Being employed is basic:
You show up.
You get paid.
You do what's asked.

Being valued is different:

Your ideas get heard in meetings.
Your manager asks for your input on big decisions.
You see a path forward, not just another day.
People notice when you're not there.
Your growth matters as much as your output.

Don't accept being invisible somewhere that needs you to show up.

Your worth isn't defined by your willingness to accept less.
