Rogers

Rogers were my first and remained my largest client as a self-employed software consultant / developer for 4 years. Developing workflow solutions for their UK business, we managed to deliver a solution which was 300% more effective - one data entry person versus 3 - than the incumbent application in the US office. Over the coming years,  I oversaw the implementation of our solution into the much larger US office and continue to increase the functionality to deliver significant cost savings and increase the profitability of the specialist reports sent to their large pharmacolgy clients.

NORTH WEST MUSIC LIMITED

Following on from the demise of Panther Music, a new company was formed, focusing on music imports and a hugely growing market - a service offered to the insurance companies to replace the ever expensive music collections lost to theft or fire.  

This service second line required further software development but it soon became apparent, there was no real need for my technical expertise. With the blessing of the business, I cross-trained into a new software development product and became self-employed.

Panther Music 

Fast growing music distribution company, specialising in "Overstocks" and "Deletions", selling to UK music shops and wholesalers and distributors around the world. 

Started out as in effect as a graduate trainee made responsible for all the IT and computer software systems. With less than 20 employees there was no formal training but plenty of opportunity to learn.

Developed a whole range of bespoke software products to manage the day to day running of the company. Stock Control, sales order processing, stock purchasing, warehousing and sales ledger.  

As someone who is always more interested in the business case, than developing, researched and sourced an innovative development technology which enabled a company a fraction of the size of Polygram, EMI, BMG, Our Price etc to develop software systems which were the envy of these much larger companies. One of which was the specialist back ordering system which enabled our clients to phone up and place an order from our 500,000+ consolidated database of music recordings from around the world. 

The company grew from just under £1 million to over £8 million turnover in the space of 7 years. As the company grew, my responsibility grew with it, running the back office team including accounts and sitting on the informal board of directors. 

Sadly, the principal shareholder, against the wishes of everyone else, made a number of strategic decisions which led to the company's demise. Tough times, but again helped me to learn some very valuable lessons.

30+ year's experience working with businesses at Director level. I've worked with businesses of all sizes. Time has shown I work best within the SME market - defined as between 1-100 people. 

My background is software and technology so I provide Director Level CIO Support. In English - I ensure the business has the right Software Systems Strategy - off-the-shelf and/or bespoke - to help support and deliver the business owner's vision for growth and towards their eventual exit.

Whilst clearly I and the companies I work with understand the importance of systems - especially when looking to scale/maximising the business valuation - there are so many other factors that are needed to achieve that. Sales + Marketing, People and of course sound financial planning and advice.

My strength is truly understanding the vision of the business owner, doing everything in my power to gain and retain their trust and giving them implicit faith that I have their and their business's best long-term interests at heart. 

This allows me, where appropriate, to introduce the right people/business partners to support the transformation of their business and maximise the opportunity.

How to sum up my role? An informal/formal mentor, a confidant, someone who will deliver success where I have the right skill set and introduce them to others where they are better suited. 

Most importantly, I ensure the business owner retains faith in their plan and whilst knowing there is always change and hard work involved, with the right approach, the overall journey can be fun and enjoyable. 

Personal Life

Apart from that, we both love walking our three dogs and where possible that will include a stop at a pub.

Other shared loves are skiing, Ryder Cup - we were at Medinah and the British Lions - we have been lucky enough to go to New Zealand in 2005 and 2017.

Currently in the process of looking to move to Cornwall, so we can spend more time by and in the sea
