As Chairman of Smarter Capital, my role is to drive results and find solutions that enhance the Groups performance. I am responsible for overseeing the acquisition of digital marketing agencies for the Group, as well as supporting acquisitions in the e-commerce and Support Services verticals. 

Since June 2022, we have successfully integrated eight companies into the Group, expanding our reach and capabilities locally, nationally, and now globally.

My primary focus is on growing the Digital Agency vertical and supporting the growth of our e-commerce vertical, each with a target of achieving £3 million in EBIT. This growth objective demonstrates our dedication to maximising the profitability and success of these sectors within the Group.

In addition to my responsibilities within the Group, I also prioritise assisting founders in maximising their shareholder value. This indicates our commitment to fostering strong relationships with the entrepreneurs behind the acquired companies, providing guidance and support to help them achieve their goals.

Furthermore, I am leading the development of our "Smarter Fund," which aims to generate above-average returns for everyday capital. This fund offers a secured solution that provides attractive financial opportunities while mitigating risk.

Hello, I’m Kush Birdi, Co-Founder & Managing Partner of Birdi & Co.

I’ve worked in the legal industry for some time, building up experience across various practice areas. But, the day I really found my sense of purpose, was the day I decided to found this firm. It offers me the opportunity to do the work I love, while creating an environment that operates in a way that fits how I feel clients and staff should be treated.

Building relationships

Over the years, I’ve forged strong bonds with clients and earned their trust. I think this is because I’m really dedicated to knowing who we work with. Empathy, combined with a warm and approachable nature are as important as delivering top-quality technical work.

Can-do attitude

I try to bring positivity and energy to every project. Not every piece of work is a straight line, but the right attitude and work ethic can keep everything moving forward. If something can be done, I want to find a way to make it happen.

Beyond the law

Anybody who knows me knows that I’m an avid Formula 1 fan, so I can often be found watching cars driving around in a circle at 200mph. I also find property refurbishment scratches my creative itch.

Outside of that, I’m a husband and a father to a young child and feel life has been good to me. I have a career I’m passionate about and a family I love. Who can complain?

The “small jobs” are not beneath you - they’re the price of entry. 

In 2021, when I set up Birdi & Co Solicitors from scratch, my first ever instruction was a Terms & Conditions review.

£600 fee.

My first proper transaction after that was the sale of a business for £26,000. 

£2,500 fee.

Now we’ve got a team acting on multiple transactions in the multi-millions, with fees in the five figures (occasionally more).

To build something real, you have to do your time on the smaller work.

That doesn’t devalue you or mean you’re behind.

It’s the process.

So  if you’re just starting out or thinking about it, enjoy the early phase because you’ll look back one day and feel proud of what you built.

At Birdi & Co Solicitors, Q1 is a proper sprint.

As the team leader I wear a lot of hats, but in Q1 I have one big job… safe and compliant completions 🙏

Clients are making huge decisions with their businesses and their futures - and our referrers are putting their own relationships on the line when they introduce people to us.

That faith and trust sits with me. And it’s personal 🔥

So what does “safe and compliant” actually look like in the trenches?

It looks like structure, not last minute heroics:

🟣 weekly transaction meetings - brutally clear status, high communication, mental blockers removed

🟣 clear ownership of next steps (no assumptions)

🟣 risks flagged early, not at the 11th hour

🟣 tight comms with clients and counterparts

🟣 clean audit trail so we move fast and stay protected

And we’re not alone - most corporate law firms/departments will be feeling the same demand.

Which is why we need to keep a close eye on wellbeing 🧘‍♂️

High demand can quietly drain people if you’re not careful, and great client service isn’t worth burning out the team that delivers it. So we keep priorities clear, check in properly, support each other and make it easy to ask for help early.

I’ve established a safe “code word” with the team to feel psychology safer to communicate if they’re struggling but don’t know how to express this - no drama, just support 🙏 I will be taking a constant check on this.  

Right - back to it. This is what it’s all about 💪

I still remember the conversation with Leena when I told her I wanted to start a law firm from scratch.

No clients lined up. No team. No safety net. Just the two of us walking away from employed roles and a guaranteed monthly salary. Me initially and Leena shortly afterwards.

I was braced for the sensible questions. “Have you thought this through?” “What’s the plan if it doesn’t work?”

But she didn’t bat an eyelid.

She backed the idea, backed me and then did what matters most - she rolled up her sleeved and helped build it with me. She’s also a killer M&A lawyer.

Looking back, that support wasn’t about “confidence” or hype. It was practical and involved doing the unglamorous work, alongside me, to keeps a business moving while trying to win work, deliver properly and stay sane.

I’ve learned from that early phase that you don’t need certainty to start something new. You just need commitment and discipline.

So if you’re sitting on an idea right now, don’t just ask “how do I do it?” 

Ask “who’s in my corner?” 

Even if you’re building alone, the support is powerful for maintaining commitment and discipline.

Self-belief is powerful, of course, but the right people around you is what keeps you executing when motivation disappears 🚀

We’ve started a little tradition again… 🎈

We’ve got a balloon for every transaction we’re aiming to complete by 2 April.

It’s partly to keep the team focused. Partly to keep spirits high.

And partly because when you’re in the thick of Q1 completions, you need something visual to show we’re moving forward 💪

And we’ve already popped the first one off the list ✅

On Friday, we completed the sale of three nurseries - with a fourth hived out to another company which is being retained by our client.

These are great outcomes for clients, but we like to make a thing of it internally too. 

The work behind each completion is intense, detailed and completely team-led.

Now… onto the next balloon. 💪

🤷‍♂️ It’s Monday morning and social media is already loud.

Everyone’s posting advice, “10 things to do before 9am”…and it’s easy to start the week feeling behind before you’ve even begun.

Remember that it’s you vs you out there 💪

🔥 Your consistency vs your comfort.

So I’m doing one simple thing today:

✅ execute it properly

✅ then move to the next

Sometimes I get asked whether business is harder than being a dad.

I mean…business is bloody hard! 

When you’re leading a team, serving clients and trying to execute at a high level, the pressure can feel constant.

There are deadlines, decisions and someone who needs something from you right now.

But fatherhood is a different kind of hard, and a different kind of privilege ❤️

You can step away from business for a moment (even if your brain doesn’t always cooperate). With your kids, you don’t really get that - and truthfully, you wouldn’t want it either.

What I struggle with most is the switch (and I’m sure I’m not alone) 😅

I’ll walk through the door after a full-on day and my mind is still running at work speed… and then Aaron wants to show me something he’s proud of, or Amara is finding her voice in her own little way 🥹

It’s the best feeling and reminds me that theyre not after the “high performance” version of me.

They just need the present version 🙏

Honestly, being a dad is harder but nothing  replaces that pleasure. 

It keeps me honest and raises my standards in life 💪

“What got me here isn’t gonna get me there.”

That was one of the biggest lessons last year taught me.

I launched the Creator Finance Podcast the way I’ve always made content—scrappy, doing almost everything myself. And it was working. The channel was growing.

Then life happened. The day job got busier. My son arrived. Something had to give.

So I put the project on hiatus.

I’m not going to sugarcoat it—that’s one of my biggest failings of last year. I hate being inconsistent.

But here’s the thing: nothing has changed about why I started this. I still believe creators and digital entrepreneurs are massively underserved by the financial planning world. And as an ex-musician and creator myself, I know I’m the right person to build this.

So we go again. But differently this time. I’ve learned from last year’s mistakes and I’m fully resourcing the project now.
