Freelance Software Engineer

Worked as a hands-on development lead delivering a near real-time data ingest and aggregation platform - the Juicer. High-level overview is at http://bbcnewslabs.co.uk/projects/juicer/.

Using various technologies including Clojure, RabbitMQ, Postgres, Elasticsearch, AWS and Ansible we designed and built a platform for ingesting news from around the web (~800 feeds across ~500 sources), analysing, tagging and aggregating the content, and providing an API for filtering and searching (full-text, faceted, tag co-occurrence, similarity-based).

The Juicer has been used in hackathons in Great Britain and in various African countries. Different universities around the world as well as internal BBC R&D projects have made use of the data we have collected and processed.

Worked as a backend engineer on the product team. Some projects that I was responsible for or a core contributor to:
An Elasticsearch-powered search backend for the customer and merchant dashboards, providing the ability for users to search through their payments, customers and payouts extremely quickly.
An in-house modulus-checking library for validating UK bank accounts, in order to move away from third party validation services which were unreliable and expensive.
European payments pilot, which included implementing complex timing logic for submitting payments along with other core parts of the SEPA (Single Euro Payments Area) protocol.

Although the day-to-day tasks involved a lot of Ruby and Rails, I had the opportunity to work with and leverage a multitude of technologies, including Redis, RabbitMQ, Postgres and Elasticsearch.

Alongside everyday project work, I worked closely with the support team, helping them troubleshoot and fix issues, as well as occasionally providing front-line support (phone, email) for merchants and customers.

Created a robust automation tool that helps with running queries and reports, aims to aid in analysis of the data by letting users annotate graphs and serves as an interface for developing queries and exploring the resulting datasets.
My contributions consisted of the underlying infrastructure, a reports engine (multiple queries, email notifications), a scheduler, annotations framework and a web interface.
Some of the technologies I used to create the system were PgQ (Skype's own queue system, built in-house), Redis, jQuery, Python+Django.
